Candid, brave and ultimately inspirational…

While many of the subjects in this memoir aren’t easy to talk about, Danielle Larsen delivers her story flawlessly and highlights the moments and events of a journey that makes for a gripping read. In this day and age the subject of mental health needs to be talked about more and this book does that. Being wrongly diagnosed at a young age ultimately paves the way for Larsen’s struggles while the main bulk of the story focuses on her being in a relationship with an abusive controlling partner. For much of the time it’s frustrating to see the abuse that unfolds – why can’t she just leave? Unfortunately it’s a little more complex than that and part of the journey is understanding that it’s hard to leave sometimes and breaking those shackles is difficult when the circumstances of gaslighting and emotional abuse are present.

“Normal does not have to mean good or comfortable, but simply what one gets used to…”

This book acts as guide in some senses to spread awareness while also informing others. The narration style feels natural and relays every moment with dignity and there are some moments when you cannot help but feel for a person who has been through so much – a lot of it wasn’t even her fault and you just want her to succeed in the end. There are even some brighter moments later on which highlight finding inspiration from musical theatre and how we all need to find something for emotional release. For Danielle Larson to share a memoir like this it’s incredibly brave and ultimately inspirational because the message is no matter how many chips are down you can always come back, there’s always hope and survival is probably the greatest gift we have.

An honest and powerful memoir.
Incredibly well written, although it was an emotional journey, I couldn't put it down.
Congratulations to the author for her bravery that not only enabled her to make a new life for herself but had the courage to write this memoir.

This is a powerful novel that really does put you into the shoes of a domestic abuse victim. Danielle Larsen has crafted a brutality honest account of her experiences with Mark: the alcoholic, hot headed, control obsessed, 'partner'.

To write something of this nature must have taken a great deal of courage and for that Larsen must be celebrated. This novel could, and no doubt will, help many people in similar situations find their path to freedom sooner.

If you're in Danielle's situation I hope you find strength in her words and inspiration in her story.

The structure of the novel is linear, starting from the first meeting with Mark to the final encounter and you will probably find yourself shouting at the book quite often. I won't spoil the events of the novel, but if you love Hamlition now it will take on a whole meaning for you - that'll make you love it even more.

There is a great deal of sadness crafted into these pages and you will probably find it difficult to read at times, but every cloud has a silver lining and there are a few in here too - Mojo being one of the brightest.

Sexual assault, physical violence and emotional abuse all feature in this memoir and if you find these topics difficult to read you may struggle with this book, however Larsen's brutal honesty and depiction of these topics are well written and although horrible, they're not depicted in graphic detail.

This is an important novel as the title suggests - Voiceless to Vocal is a powerful message of survival, growth and strength and I want to take the time to thank the author for sharing her experiences with us.

Thank you Danielle Larsen.

You are a hero!

Oh, this was so familiar.

This is not a Disney happily ever after story. But for many of us, it is as familiar as breathing.

The things Danielle the author went through, you want to say that can't be true. However, as a person who lived through these same types of abuse, I felt like I was seeing this in 3D technicolor.

Recoving from medical abuse, domestic abuse, and neglect as a child, there often is no way out.

I am glad to see another make it and remind me that recovery from abuse is a lifetime journey.

I highly recommend the book. It did make me have deep feelings. It may trigger some.

But it is still a great read of a life in progress and carrying on.

The afterwords and thank yous at the end of the book were as much a part of this book as all the rest. The afterwords made the book the best read. It was the reminder that this life-recovery is a journey.

Danielle Larsen’s graphic and gripping account of living with abuse—emotional, verbal, and physical—is a must-read for anyone in a similar situation now or in the past. She defines manipulative types of abuse by name, and gives examples through the telling of her story. There is still much to learn about abuse, as well as mental health misdiagnosis, and the author presents a wealth of information on both in a heartbreaking manner by taking the reader on her journey.

The author’s courage, bravery, and thoughtful manner in which she deals with hardships make the reader feel s/he is right there with her. This reader finds inspiration and strength in “From Voiceless to Vocal.” Highly recommend.

This was an emotional roller coaster of a book as it put you in the eyes of the victim. I recommend this book but prepare for some tears to roll in your journey through this novel of a book. Great Job and Well Written!

This book had me so emotionally invested! I spent the first half only reading a page or 2 at a time, but from the halfway point I could not put it down! I was cheering (out loud!) for this book!

I poured my heart into this book and I think that shows on the pages. As one friend put it, I am a "scrappy ass survivor" and I wear that mantle proudly.
