‘Dallas Cowboys won more games than any other NFL team between 1970-1979’
Author Ray Walker steps up to the plate as a sports enthusiast and data expert with this fresh compendium of entertaining and illuminating facts about the Dallas Cowboys. Though everyone knows the team, even those us who are not football aficionados, this well written book flows with facts and trivia that both amaze and entertain. Ray has also written CRAZY SPORTS STORIES, THE ULTIMATE NEW YORK YANKEES TRIVIA BOOK, and THE ULTIMATE BOSTON BRUINS TRIVIA BOOK, so it becomes readily apparent that not only is his knowledge of football keen, but also baseball and hockey.
In his introductory comments Ray states, ‘Team fandom should be inspirational. Our attachment to our favorite teams should fill us with pride, excitement, loyalty, and a sense of fulfillment in knowing that we are part of a community with many other fans who feel the same way. Dallas Cowboys fans are no exception. With a long, rich tradition in the NFL, the Cowboys have inspired their supporters for more than sixty years with their tradition of colorful players, memorable eras, big moves, and unique moments.’
And with that impetus for learning some of the facts about this team, the session (aka ‘game’) begins. Each chapter – Origins and History, Jerseys & Numbers, Cowboys Quarterbacks, The Pass Catchers, Running Wild, In the Trenches, The Back Seven, Odds & Ends & Awards, Nicknames, Alma Maters, In the Draft Room, The Trading Post, Super Bowl Special, and The Final Words – is delivered in the form of quiz questions followed (of course) by quiz answers and embellished by even more trivia in a Did You Know? section.
For knowledgeable fans and those who would like to become knowledgeable, this book is a fine resource. Impress friends and acquaintances with in depth knowledge of the sport of Football.
Some fun facts and history of the Cowboys, the repetitive format and lack of insightful story telling makes this limited for really understanding the people referenced. It was fun to go through as a fan.
If you are a fan of “America’s Team”, then you will love this book. The author has gathered fun and interesting facts about this iconic team. You will enjoy testing your knowledge in the quizzes and using these questions to stump others.
Walker follows the questions with even more information sometimes about very arcane issues which only a die-hard fan would find interesting. This book is written with you, the fanatical fan, in mind. Enjoy it and share it with others.
My only problem with the book is it seems a little too rote. Those Cowboy fans I know are passionate about their team. I would have expected to see that passion flowing and maybe overflowing from the book. All the facts are here. The information is presented carefully, but there just isn’t the pizzazz one would expect from a book on the Cowboys.
While I’m at it, I will give one other suggestion to the author. Most true false question generally have a kernel of truth even when they are false. It would have been nice, especially for those of us who are the uninitiated, if Walker would have said, “False, but…” and given us that morsel of truth to relish.
Upon request the publisher sent me a copy of the book to review.
