Pathways to Joy: The Master Vivekananda on the Four Yoga Paths to God

Rate this book
At the 1893 Parliament of Religions in Chicago, Swami Vivekananda transformed Western thinking. He showed that, far from being an exotic novelty, Hinduism was an important, legitimate spiritual tradition with valuable lessons for the West. Pathways to Joy is a selection of 108 of his sacred teachings on Vedanta philosophy. In accessible and powerful prose, Vivekananda illuminates the four classical yoga paths — karma, bhakti, raja, and jnana — for the different natures of humankind. The messages focus on the oneness of existence; the divinity of the soul; the truth in all religions; and unifying with the Divine within. Invaluable and inspiring, the selections also explore karma, maya, rebirth, and other great revelations of Hinduism.

"Arise Awake and Stop not til the goal is reached"

Vivekananda left a body of philosophical works (see Vivekananda's complete works). His books (compiled from lectures given around the world) on the four Yogas (Raja Yoga, Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga and Jnana Yoga) are very influential and still seen as fundamental texts for anyone interested in the Hindu practice of Yoga. His letters are of great literary and spiritual value. He was also considered a very good singer and a poet.By the time of his death, He had composed many songs including his favorite Kali the Mother. He used humor for his teachings and was also an excellent cook. His language is very free flowing. His own Bengali writings stand testimony to the fact that he believed that words - spoken or written - should be for making things easier to understand rather than show off the speaker or writer's knowledge.

Swami Vivekananda [ স্বামী বিবেকানন্দ ] (1863 – 1902), born Narendranath Datta, was an Indian Hindu monk, philosopher, author, religious teacher, and the chief disciple of the Indian mystic Ramakrishna. He was a key figure in the introduction of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world and is credited with raising interfaith awareness, and bringing Hinduism to the status of a major world religion.

Born in Calcutta, Bengal Presidency, British India (present-day Kolkata, West Bengal, India)

This is the most beautiful and probably the most important book on yoga and spirituality that I have read to date. Swami Vivekananda was the supreme writer and thinker regarding the four paths of yoga, and after reading his work, I am ever more convinced that he was enlightened. If we could all follow his profound guidance, we would ebe infinitely happier.

DNF p.80. One star, due mostly to my own ignorant expectations. The word yoga in the title is used in the more traditional Hindu sense than my western interpretation of the physical practice I do for mindfulness and exercise. Vivekananda's collection of short essays are more about oneness with the universe, God, karma, reincarnation, etc. While others may be looking for this kind of book, it just got repetitive for me as I kept waiting for the parts about my physical yoga practice to come in. Sorry to those who liked this book, it's not you it's me.

The first thing that comes to my mind is why did I not read this book of a great vision and personality when I was young. I would strongly. suggest ever person young or old at least make an effort to read this book or any book written of Swami Vivekananda. The only set back is unnecessary length of the book. I don't know if it was lack of my understanding of the contents. This book is about soul and body. Once any person reads this book it would change the way they live today. It is not about religion but about our soul ,mind and meditation. It is best for a reader to read this book instead of me writing about it. Understanding of each person is different so please read it for yourself.

Pathways to Joy is the most enlightened yoga/spirituality book I've ever read. Master Vivekananda teaches the four yoga paths to God including:
Karma Yoga-the manner in which we realize our divinity through works and duty.
Bhakti Yoga-the realization of the divinity through devotion to and love of God.
Raja Yoga-the realization of the divinity though the control of the mind and
Jnana Yoga-the realization of our divinity through knowlege.
I really enjoyed his teachings, his thoughts and the spirit of universality that was conveyed throughout. It truly makes you look at life on a higher level. It's also a book I'd want to read over and over.

The book is a little too long for it's content. It's repetitive. It's a good introduction and it's organized well. The four pathways refers to the four yogas or actions; Jnani, Karma, Raja and Bhakti. These are four ways of being closer to God. It's in the Vedanta tradition. It is built out of 108 lectures of Swami Vivekananda.

Swami Vivekananda, through accessible and compelling prose, invites readers to delve into the essence of Vedanta philosophy, unraveling the intricacies of the four classical yoga paths. The teachings are not merely intellectual discussions but practical guides for individuals with diverse spiritual inclinations. By illuminating these paths — Karma for the path of action, Bhakti for the path of devotion, Raja for the path of meditation, and Jnana for the path of knowledge — Swamiji acknowledges the diverse natures of humankind and provides a holistic approach to spiritual growth.

Central to the teachings is the concept of the oneness of existence, emphasizing the interconnectedness of all living beings. Swamiji expounds on the divinity of the soul and unveils the common threads that run through various religious traditions. In conclusion, "Pathways to Joy" is more than a compilation of teachings; it is a spiritual road-map offered by a masterful guide. Swami Vivekananda's insights continue to radiate with the same vibrancy and relevance that captivated audiences in 1893. For those embarking on a journey of self-discovery and spiritual exploration, this book stands as a beacon of light, illuminating the pathways to joy and oneness with the Divine!

Sorprendente para los que nos hemos criado en la cultura cristiana occidental. Una visión radicalmente distinta de la espiritualidad, mucho más amable y seductora
