காத்திருப்பின் தனிமையும் எதிர்பார்ப்பின் துயரமும் மூடுபனியாக அந்த மனிதர்களை, இடத்தை, காலத்தை மூடுகிறது. அந்த உறைபனிக்குள் உணர்வுகள் உருகிச் சொற்களாக உருமாறி மௌனத்தின் இசையுடன் பெருகுகின்றன. கதையின் ஓட்டம் வாசிப்பவர்களின் மனவெளியில் மஞ்சுப் படலமாகப் படர்கிறது.

Madath Thekkepaattu Vasudevan Nair, popularly known as M. T., was an Indian author, screenplay writer and film director. He was a prolific and versatile writer in modern Malayalam literature, and was one of the masters of post-Independence Indian literature. Randamoozham, which retells the story of the Mahabharata from the point of view of Bhimasena, is widely credited as his masterpiece.
At the age of 20, as a chemistry undergraduate, he won the prize for the best short story in Malayalam for Valarthumrigangal at World Short Story Competition jointly conducted by New York Herald Tribune, Hindustan Times, and Mathrubhumi. His first major novel, Naalukettu (The Legacy), written at the age of 23, won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 1958. His other novels include Manju (Mist), Kaalam (Time), Asuravithu (The Demon Seed), and Randamoozham (The Second Turn). The emotional experiences of his early days went into his novels, and most of his works are oriented towards the basic Malayalam family structure and culture. His three novels set in traditional tharavads in Kerala are Naalukettu, Asuravithu, and Kaalam.
Nair was a screenwriter and director of Malayalam films. He directed seven films and wrote the screenplay for around 54 films. He won the National Film Award for Best Screenplay four times, for: Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha (1989), Kadavu (1991), Sadayam (1992), and Parinayam (1994), which is the most by anyone in the screenplay category. In 1995 he was awarded the highest literary award in India, Jnanpith, for his overall contribution to Malayalam literature. In 2005, India's third highest civilian honour, Padma Bhushan, was awarded to him.

The only author I have seen who can cast a spell on the mind of readers with his magical writing within a span of just 80 odd pages is M.T. This novella set in the backdrop of a hill station explores the intricacies of separation and waiting for their loved ones. M.T. is undeniably someone in the league of Marquez, Llosa, and Kundera who will surprise you with every word in his creation.

I got M.T.Vasudevan Nair's 'Manju' when I went to the book fair last week. I got the Tamil translation. It is a slim novel at around 79 pages. It is closer to a novella or a long short story. I read it in one sitting yesterday. This is my first book of his.

'Manju' looks like it might be the main character's name. But it isn't. It stands for 'mist'. The whole story happens in a place near the mountains filled with mist, with snowy Himalayan peaks around and a beautiful lake nearby which tourists visit during summer. Vimala works in a school which is in this beautiful town. All the students and staff leave the school at the start of the summer holidays but Vimala stays back. When people ask her when she is going home for the holidays, she says 'Tomorrow'. Later, when they get back from the holidays, they ask her when she got back. She says 'Yesterday'. Between this tomorrow and yesterday, the whole summer passes for her. (This last sentence is not mine - it is from the book. I found it very beautiful.) Vimala doesn't get along well with her family - her father was a benevolent patriarch, but he is old now and is not well. Her mother is probably having an affair with a neighbour, her sister is going around with some guy, and her brother is into drugs and gambling and is hanging out with the wrong crowd. None of them care about her, and so Vimala has stopped going home for the holidays. This particular summer, after everyone has left, she takes a walk to the lake, takes a ferry ride, in an old ferry, which has a new ferryman. While Vimala lives her summer in solitude, we get introduced to some of the characters who people the story - the ferryman, or boy rather, who is waiting for his long lost father to come back, the guard of her building who is kind, but who is also lazy, and is drunk half the time, a new neighbour who comes and stays in the opposite building who tries to become friends with her. We also get to know more about Vimala's family members and a little bit about her own past. We learn that once upon a time she had someone in her life, but for some reason he left and she is now waiting for him to come back. This story about her past is told in vague terms - we can see the overall shape of the story and can make out some features, but the details are vague and are not precise enough. It is like looking at an Impressionist painting by Claude Monet - we can sense the overall mood and have an idea of the general contours but the details evade us. I loved that part of the story.

There is a beautiful introduction to the story which says that the book is about the act of waiting - how the summer days wait for winter to arrive, how a mountain town waits for tourists, how a boy waits for his father, how a woman waits for her lover, how a man waits for his death. It was interesting to look at the book from that perspective.

The book is probably an impressionistic work - what happens in the middle is more important than the beginning and the end, thoughts and ideas are probably more pronounced than events, and the past is more prominent than the present. I loved that aspect of the book.

I enjoyed reading 'Manju'. I am happy to read my first M.T.Vasudevan Nair book. I can't wait to read more.

നാലുകെട്ട് വായിച്ച ശേഷം വായിക്കുന്ന നോവല എന്ന നിലക്ക് ഗ്രിഹാതുരത്വത്തിന്റെ ഒരു പുതിയ തലത്തിലേക് മഞ്ഞ് കൊണ്ട് പോകും എന്നാ പ്രതീഷയോടെ ആണ് ഞാൻ വായന തുടങ്ങിയത്. പക്ഷേ പ്രതീഷകലെയെല്ലാം കാറ്റിൽ പറത്തി ഒരു പുതിയ വായനാനുഭവം സമ്മാനിച്ചു കൊണ്ടാണ് നോവൽ മുന്നോട്ട് നീങ്ങുനത് . വളരെ പയ്യെ തുടങ്ങി അവസാനത്തോട് അടുക്കുമ്പോൾ ആണ് നോവലിന്റെ യഥാര്ത ചിത്രം മനസിലായത് . വെറും 80 പേജുള്ള ഈ നോവല സംസരികുന്നത് വലിയ ആശയം അതും ഒരു psychologic അപ്പ്രോചിലൂടെ ആണ് നോവല മുന്നോട്ടു നീങ്ങുന്നത്‌. "തീക്ഷണത മങ്ങാത്ത കണ്ണുകൾ കുഴഞ്ഞു പോയ നാവിന്റെ സ്ഥാനം ഏറ്റെടുത്തിരിക്കുന്നു". നോവൽ കവിത പോലെ പാടി തീർത്തിരിക്കുകയാണ് M .T ഗൃഹാതുരത്വത്തിന്റെ തമ്പുരാൻ ....

കാത്തിരിപ്പ് എന്ന വികാരം കാവ്യാത്മകമായ ഒരനുഭവമായി, കാലസാഗരത്തിലെ അനന്തമായ അലകളായി , അനശ്വരമായ ഹിമശെെലത്തിലെ ശീതകണങ്ങളായി , തൊട്ടറിയാന്‍ കഴിയും , ഈ നോവല്‍ വായിക്കുമ്പോള്‍.
എംടി കൃതികളിലെ ഭാഷ ഗംഭീരം എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ പോര, അസാധ്യം എന്ന് തന്നെ പറയണം!

An extraordinary book which is a novel and a poem at the same time. The writing has so much that fleeting and dissolving quality of poems that it evokes in the reader an almost spiritual or metaphysical experience, of the infinite and infallible TIME , and this neverending and exhausting lying in wait, in wait for the subtle and mysterious workings of fate , which is called LIFE.
Another masterpiece from the legend, MT Vasudevan Nair.

മഞ്ഞു പെയ്തല്ല, ഞാൻ അതിലൂടെ നടന്നു. ഓരോ വരിയും തണുത്തുറഞ്ഞ മണ്ണിന്റെ ഗന്ധവും ഓർമ്മകളുടെ മന്ത്രികയും നിറഞ്ഞ കാറ്റും. വിമലയുടെ ഏകാന്തതയെ ഞാൻ കണ്ടു, മഴ പെയ്ത ശേഷമുള്ള മണ്ണിന്റെ മണവും തടാകത്തിന്റെ തണുപ്പും ഞാൻ അനുഭവിച്ചു. നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട കുട്ടിയുടെ മന്ത്രികം, വിനോദസഞ്ചാരികളെ നോക്കി വിമലയുടെ കണ്ണുകളിലെ കൊതി, രാത്രിയിൽ തടാകത്തിൽ മിന്നിമറയുന്ന നക്ഷത്രങ്ങൾ - അവയെല്ലാം എന്റെ ഹൃദയത്തിൽ തറഞ്ഞു. മഞ്ഞു കഥയല്ല, അനുഭവമാണ്.

மஞ்சு அல்லது மஞ்ஞு வா என்ற சந்தேகம். மஞ்சு வியாபார உத்தியாக இருக்கலாம் தவறில்லை. மொழி பெயர்ப்பில் தலைப்பு பெயர் மஞ்சு ஆகவே தொடரட்டும் என விட்டிருக்கிறார்கள்.
மஞ்ஞு என்றால் மூடுபனி என்ற மொழிபெயர்க்கலாம்.
மொழிபெயர்ப்பு இன்னும் சிறப்பாக இருந்திருக்கலாம் சில இடங்களில் வார்த்தைகள் முடியாமலே நின்று தாவி விடுகின்றன.

மலையாளத்தில் கதைகளுக்கும், திரைக்கதைகளுக்கும் பெரும் பெயர் கொண்ட எம்.டி வாசுதேவன் நாயரால் 1964 ல் எழுதப் பட்ட குறுங்கதை. ( கதைகளுக்கான விதிகளும் அளவுகளும் பரிச்சயமில்லை எனக்கு) இக்கதைக்கான வேறு மொழிப்பெயர்ப்புகள் இருந்தாலும் 2017 இன்றைய நடைக்கேற்ப மீண்டும் மொழிப்பெயர்க்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது.

கதையின் கரு மனித மனத்தின் தீராப்பசியான எதிர்பார்ப்பை மையம் கொண்டே அமைந்திருக்கிறது. கதையின் களம் தற்போதைய உத்தரகாண்ட் மையமாக கொண்ட நைனிடால் பகுதியை சுற்றியே நகர்கிறது.

கதையின் முக்கிய மாந்தர்களாக விமலா தேவியும், சர்தார்ஜியும், புத்துவும், விமலாவின் தந்தையுமே, நால்வருக்கும் எந்தவித தொடர்பும் இல்லையென்றாலும் நால்வரும் எதிர்பார்ப்பு என்ற உணர்வில் ஒரே புள்ளியில் இணைந்து விடுகிறார்கள்.

கதை மாந்தர்களுக்கு வெளி உறவுகளின் மேல் கொண்ட பெரும் பிடிப்பு இரத்த உறவுகளின் மேல் அமையவில்லை இரத்த உறவுகளுக்குள்ளான ஒழுங்கீனமும் விமலாவின் குடும்பத்தில் தந்தையின் கட்டுக்கோப்பான வாழ்க்கை முறை, வரம்பைத் தாண்ட தூண்டி நிச்சயமற்ற பெரு வெளிகளை திறந்து விடுகிறது. .

மூடுபனி வழி எந்த பொருளையும் பார்ப்பது எளிதல்ல. ஆனால் அதற்கு பின் உள்ள பொருட்கள் உண்மையே. கதை மாந்தர்களின் வழியும் அப்படித்தான் விமலாவின் தந்தையின் குடும்ப அமைப்பிற்கான எதிர்பார்ப்பும்,, தன் காதலனை எதிர்பார்த்து காத்திருக்கும் விமலாவும், பிறக்கும் முன்னே விட்டுப் போன புத்துவின் தந்தை தேடலும், சர்தார்ஜி எதிர்பார்க்கும் இறப்பும் உண்மைதான் ஆனால் அது வருவதற்கான காலமோ ஒரு நிச்சயமற்ற மூடுபனியாகவே இருக்கிறது.

உறுதியான பொருளதார பிடிமானம் கடவுள் நம்பிக்கைகளை உதாசீனப்படுத்த தோன்றி விடுவது கள யதார்த்தமாகி விடுகிறது.

விமலாவின் நம்பிகையற்ற பெருவழியை.புத்து, சர்தார்ஜி கதபாத்திரங்கள் வழி மூடுபனியை போல தோன்றி எதிர்பார்ப்பிறகான மூலத்தையும் நம்பிக்கை வித்தையும் விதைத்து விட்டு போகிறார்கள்.

This short novel by one of the most gifted Malayalam writers made me think about something very inevitable in our life; something that will make you excited, sometimes desperate, sometimes disappointed. It is a verb, a noun, a pronoun and a feeling...Yes, Manju made me think about "waiting".

This is a story of people, in a faraway hill station, each of them waiting for someone. Vimala, a teacher in a residential school, is waiting for Sudheer , who, touched her heart years before. Buddhu, the boatman, is waiting for his father, who he has never seen, to come back. When the hill station is getting ready to welcome tourists, these people are waiting for some tourists to come back and give meaning and hope to their lives.

In spite of being a novella, the main protagonist, Vimala, is a well-defined character. Her life, family background, emotional setup etc are well-etched. The other characters who appear in between somehow supplements her loneliness.

ജീവിതത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വേദനയേറിയ ഒരു പ്രതിസന്ധി മരണവും വിരഹവുമല്ല... അത് കാത്തിരിപ്പാണ്... ജീവിച്ചിരിപ്പുണ്ടോ... മരിച്ചുപോയോ എന്നറിയാതെയുള്ള ഒരുവന് വേണ്ടിയുള്ള കാത്തിരിപ്പ്... ഇവിടെ വിമലടീച്ചറുടെ കാത്തിരിപ്പ്


സർദാർജി ഒരു വൈകുന്നേരം കടം ചോദിച്ചിരുന്നു... അതു പൂർത്തിയാക്കാനുള്ള കാത്തിരിപ്പ്


ബുദു അവന്റെ വെള്ളക്കാരൻ അച്ഛന് വേണ്ടിയുള്ള കാത്തിരിപ്പ്... ഓരോ കാത്തിരിപ്പിന് ഇടയിലും ദിവസങ്ങളും മാസങ്ങളും വർഷങ്ങളും വിസ്‌മൃതിയിലേക്ക് ഉരുകുമ്പോൾ കാത്തിരിപ്പ് മാത്രം ബാക്കിയാകുന്നു.


"എനിക്ക് നിങ്ങളെ ഇഷ്ടമാണ്... കാരണമൊന്നുമില്ല"


ഒരാളെ കാരണമൊന്നുമില്ലാതെ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്നതല്ലേ യഥാർത്ഥ പ്രണയം...??

The author marks beyond many options for the user to think and proceed towards a conclusion and that makes this book a different one from the usual ones. The story is simple and short but when we start to think on the characters and about them we comes to a realization this story offers more and more. Read the Dew and fall for the rain.

എം ടി വാസുദേവൻ നായർ എന്ന എഴുത്തുകാരനെ എനിക്ക് ഏറ്റവും പ്രിയപ്പെട്ടവൻ ആക്കിതീർത്ത പുസ്തകം. ഓരോ വരികളും എന്നെ അത്ഭുതപ്പെടുത്തി. ഇത്രയും ഹൃദ്യമായ ഭാഷയിൽ എങ്ങനെയാണ് ഒരാൾക്ക് എഴുതാൻ സാധിക്കുക! ഒരുപാട് തവണ ആവർത്തിച്ച് വായിച്ച് കഴിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു. ഇനിയും ആ വായന തുടർന്നുകൊണ്ടേയിരിക്കും.

കാത്തിരിപ്പിന്റെ കഥയാണ് മഞ്ഞ്. ഒരിക്കലും അവസാനിക്കാത്ത കാത്തിരിപ്പ് നമുക്കെല്ലാവർക്കും ഉണ്ട്. ഒന്നു കഴിയുമ്പോൾ മറ്റൊന്നിനായുള്ള കാത്തിരിപ്പ് ആരംഭിക്കുന്നു. മരണം വരെ അത് തുടർന്നുകൊണ്ടേയിരിക്കും. ഞാനും നിങ്ങളും എല്ലാം യുഗങ്ങളായി കാത്തിരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. കാലത്തിൻറെ പാറക്കെട്ടുകളിൽ മഞ്ഞു വീഴുന്നു, ഉരുകുന്നു, വീണ്ടും മഞ്ഞിൻ പടലങ്ങൾ തണുത്തുറഞ്ഞു കട്ടപിടിക്കുന്നു. നാമെല്ലാം കാത്തിരിക്കുന്നു.

വിമല തൻറെ പ്രിയതമനെ കാത്തിരിക്കുന്നു. വർഷങ്ങളായി തുടരുന്ന കാത്തിരിപ്പിന് ശക്തി അവളുടെ പ്രണയവും വിശ്വാസവും തന്നെ. ബുദ്ദു കാത്തിരിക്കുന്നത് ജന്മം തന്ന പിതാവിനെയാണ് ആണ്, പിതാവായ ഖോരസാഹിബിന് പോലും അറിയാത്ത മകൻ! അവരെ കൂടുതൽ ഒന്നും വേണ്ട ഒന്ന് കണ്ടാൽ മതി ദൂരെ നിന്നാണെങ്കിൽ പോലും!

ആ സീസണിൽ ഒരു സർദാർജി അതിഥിയായി എത്തുന്നു. "ഓ പരിഭ്രമിക്കാൻ ഒന്നുമില്ല വഴിയിൽ തടഞ്ഞു നിർത്തില്ല, പ്രേമലേഖനം എഴുതില്ല, ഒന്നും ചെയ്യില്ല ഒരു ബന്ധവും സങ്കൽപ്പിക്കതെ വെറുതെ എനിക്ക് നിങ്ങളെ ഇഷ്ടമാണ്" എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു തൻറെ പ്രണയം വിമലയോട് വെളിപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന ആ യാത്രക്കാരനോട് എനിക്ക് ആരാധന തോന്നിപ്പോയി! ബോണസായി കിട്ടിയ നാലുമാസത്തെ ജീവിതവുമായി സർദാർജി മടങ്ങി. പക്ഷേ വിമലയോടൊപ്പം സായാഹ്നത്തിൽ ഒരു ബോട്ട് യാത്ര അപ്പോഴും ബാക്കിയാണ്. അതിനായി അയാളും കാത്തിരിക്കുന്നു.

Wonderful craft by MT.
The beauty is in its discontinuity. I have seen such treatment in some movies.
The characters will hesitate to walk away from the reader's mind even after the reading is completed.
There are some characters who don't have any direct role in the novel, but they live in discussions, thoughts, and memories of the main characters. Sudhir Kumar Mishra, Pushpa Sarkar, Buddhu's British father are the main characters of that type.
The beauty of Nainital and its premises are well portrayed through words. The reader will feel the cold freshness of the mist that covers the lake through MT's exceptional poetic language.

Evocative story about love , loss and longing ... MT's writing as always is gentle and sensitive speaking from the female protagonist's point of view . The novella is as light as its name itself and though its weighed down by the weight of longing , it ends on a hopeful note with Vimala consoling Budhu and then herself saying , "Varaathirikkilla .."

ഒച്ചിനെ പോലെ ഇഴഞ്ഞു നീങ്ങി എങ്ങനേയിക്കെയോ അവസാനിച്ചു , stalker എന്ന പടം ഇത് പോലെ കണ്ടു തീർത്തതാണ് , തീർക്കാനാവാത്ത പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ പാതിവഴിക്കുപേക്ഷിക്കാറാണ് പതിവ് , ഇത് പക്ഷേ വളരെ ചെറിയ നോവൽ ആയതിനാൽ വായിച്ചു, മുഴുവൻ വായിച്ചത് എന്തായാലും നന്നായി , കാരണം അവസാനത്തോടടുക്കുമ്പഴാണ് അല്പം ജീവൻ വയ്ക്കുന്നത് .

why is it that every time I pick up a malayalam novel I'm left in silence looking into the distance in either grief or wistfulness.

there is something intimate in the mother tongue, the words, they carry more. They are in some ways more real than they are in English. Raw, if you will. It has always perturbed, and my reeling from the raw often perturbs further.

The authors draws out the unsaid, and it takes form like a fog on a lake. The reader sees it, this shifting fog taking form and shifting about, just beyond their reach and yet all around them.

The intangibles haven't been more intangible.
