The War at Waversea #1

Perfectly Powerless

Rate this book
There's a darkness at Waversea College.

A shadow lingering behind every wall, a figment lurking beneath the surface. Most are oblivious to its deadly intentions, too distracted by their meaningless dramas to notice the caress of the wind that is silently coiling around us all. But I see it because I know where to look. I can taste the thickening of dread through the air until it clogs in my throat like tar. And the worst part is there's nothing anyone can do to stop it, because this poisonous undercurrent emanates from one man. Rhys Waversea.

Fuelled by his father's bank account and adrift in an endless boredom, he would watch us all burn alive for his own amusement. All of which is not my problem, until Harper Addams steps foot on campus. Captivating us both with her quick wit and smart mouth, I make it my mission to keep her from harm and namely, from him. As tensions grow, it quickly becomes apparent the hatred between Rhys and I has only just begun.

This is a M/F/M ménage story which is a part of the contemporary dark bully college romance genre. Trigger warning: dark love-hate themes, sexual scenes and bullying. Not suitable for under 18's.

This was the first book that I have from this author and it was an ok read for me. I am not a fan of love triangles and if I had known that this was how the book was going to be, I probably wouldn’t have read it. That being said, if you are into love triangles, then this is the book for you. Good characters that will keep you invested.

Clayton, Rhys and Harper are the MCs of the Perfectly Powerless. Each of them tells us his POV.

Harper is amazing! I realy liked her as a character. She's strong, no victim, and she's super kind and easy going. Clayton is a bad boy, but in a good way. Doesn't make much sense, but it will when you'll meet him. And there's Rhys (love thy name), a bad boy, and he's bad to the bone. He is filthy ritch, obnoxious and cares only for him self. In reality he's bored. Everything drops to his feet, he doesn't even have to lift a finger.
But not Harper! And that's what excites him.

There's much more to the story and to their backgrounds. But by giving you a hint, I'd just spoil too much!

Perfectly Powerless is a good start to the The War at Waversea Series. Knowing the genre, I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

There are 3 main character, Rhys, Clayton and Harper.
Rhys: rich, bully, brutal, with a vicious. His brutal upbringing has made him who he is and he owns it. He hates emotions and vacant he bothered until it comes to Harper.

Clayton: is the bad boy from the wrong side of town. Quiet and a loner. He seems to have a hero complex when it comes to Harper. He has secrets that he keeps close to his chest.

Harper: independent, sarcastic, fearless. She is attracted to both men for different reasons. She gets in the middle of a war that started well before her appearance. She is the catalyst that takes it to the next level.

The dynamics between the three is messy and brutal. There are times when Rhys takes things too far. The entire campus enables him. Harper to a certain degree let’s him get away with a lot. When she hits her limit it may already be too late for Clayton.
I wasn’t sure about this one but the story kept me wondering. I wanted Rhys to get his comeuppance but then he shared a part of his history. Then I felt sorry for him. Of course, he does something crass and cruel so I was back to hating him.
Harper had me confused to her relationship with Rhys.
Clayton was the real mystery. A lot to find out about him and his situation.

An emotion roller coaster with a lot of angst. The cliffhanger ending will have you impatiently waiting for the next battle in the war.

I’ve got this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I’m going to give this book 3.5 stars, but it’s not the author’s fault. It’s mine.

I’ve read the previous series (or tried) called The Shadowed Souls and I struggled with it. The book is written in multiple POVs and it confused me a lot. I have finished the first book in the series and as you can maybe see having yet finished the second.

So I think that because I couldn’t really get myself to read that series, my brain took it upon itself to “protect” me from having this again.

Please, again, don’t take this wrong on the author, it’s most definitely, like 100% surely not her fault!

When I started this one, I went in hoping it’ll different than The Shadowed Souls series and even thought my brain didn’t want to hope and made me be behind, it was different. This book has 3 POVs and it was so much easier for my brain to navigate through.

For the 60% of the book I needed to drag myself to read it. I gotta be honest tho, I skipped some lines and I’m not proud about that. I know Abigail put a lot of thoughts and time into this and I feel like I betrayed her.

Right now I really dislike the thinking of my brain!

However, after the 60% the book got so much better! I mean after the first steamy scene appeared, I got through the book in seconds, haha.

I’d say the book was slow in the beginning, there was a lot to catch up to and I bet that the author wanted us to know as much as possible about the characters.

Mentioning the characters. I freaking loved Harper! Like seriously! She was that type of heroine that doesn’t back down and is like a bull!

The fact that she also lost her hearing and needed to learn ASL (which I tried too, but failed unfortunately) was unfortunate but amazing in the book. I never read a book with a person who can’t hear or has implants/discs to help. This was fascinating to me and I loved it so much!

For the boys? Ugh, they are just…weird boys…one is worst than the other, although I gotta give some credit to Clayton as he is just trying to protect himself. Rhys tho? He’s just a stupidly broken rich boy who doesn’t know what to do with his emotions.

I’m really and truly sorry about my behaviour towards this book. I’m always trying to give multiple and fair shots to every author.

Thank you for giving me an opportunity to review now 2 and a half books of yours, Mrs./Ms. Abigail Cole.

Holy crap, I am speechless right now. This is my first read by Abigail & I'm wondering why! I literally could not put this book down.

Rhys is a grade A asshole & king of Waversea College. Harper is deaf after a horrible accident. Rhys sees her as a "charity case" and sets out to make her life hell. Clayton can't handle the way Rhys treats her & finds himself coming to her rescue often. The boys find themselves fighting over her attention & she makes the most of it.

Wow, wow, wow! First of all, Harper's character is a total badass & I want to be her when I grow up. The way she stands up for herself had me cheering her on. Yasss girl! Rhys is the tattooed bad boy you love to hate. I found myself loving him one second and wanting to kick his ass the next. Clayton is the strong, safe, knight in shining armor. I was just as confused as Harper about which guy I would pick, so I feel her pain. & let me just tell you, the sex was on fireeee 🔥

Abigail totally blew me away with this story. She leaves us with a cliffhanger, so I'm gonna need the next book...like yesterday 😉 Can't wait to read more about Rhys, Harper, & Clayton.

Perfectly powerless was everything I was hoping for! The spin-off from the Shadowed Souls Series seriously didn’t disappoint! It was very well written & had me flipping through pages needing more.

Harper is our female main character, she lost her parents in a tragic car accident that resulted in her being left deaf. She doesn’t allow this to make her weak, it has only made her stronger! She went to live with her auntie who sheltered her from the world but Harper wanted more from life and decided to enroll at Waversea College. Armed with T-shirt’s with hilarious Slogans on “I’m not ignoring you, I just don’t want to hear your bullsh*#” she is ready for the new chapter in her life.

Rhys & Clayton are the two swoon worthy male main characters, they are worlds apart from one another but equally broken at the same time. The two guys clash at every turn & loathe one another

Rhys is a seemingly cold hearted, spoilt rich guy whose father happens to own Waversea, but there’s more to this troubled soul than what meets the eye.

Clayton is a kind hearted guy, but is carrying the weight & guilt of his past on his shoulders, he keeps himself to himself and is at Waversea on a scholarship!

Harper had every intention to keep her head down and just focus on her work, that was until she met Rhys & Clayton. Harper is different to all the other girls at Waversea she is feisty, strong willed & intriguing to them. Rhys wants to break her, Clayton wants to save her! So much for keeping her head down, when she is equally drawn to both of them!

Perfectly powerless ended on a cliffy and I can’t wait to find out what happens to this love triangle in book 2

RH/Bully/College

SYNOPSIS (Book 1 of 3): The FC is deaf and lost her parents in a car accident 8 years ago. She has since been living a secluded life with her over protective aunt. She finally gets a place at Waversea which is a private elite university. The son of the founding family for the college becomes fixated on the FC and bullies her. The other MC is a poor scholarship student with a traumatic past who blows hot and cold trying to fight his attraction to the FC. This is book 1 of a trilogy. Book 1 covers the growing relationships and interactions between the two MCs and the FC. It ends on a cliffhanger.

This was not for me. The book is littered with editing and typing errors which are so plentiful they detract from the flow of the book with incorrect words and missing words. This became too annoying. I find it incredibly lazy when authors cannot be bothered to properly proof read or edit their books before publishing. It’s insulting to their readers.

The FC was likeable enough and strong but I could not connect with her because she just kept forgiving the bully MC for his behaviour towards her which was not just bullying but dangerous and violent. It was ridiculous. He would hurt her (as in physically hurt her) and she would still fid him sexy and attractive. Moreover, instead of reporting his behaviour to anyone she did nothing about it and barely even called the bully on his behaviour. It was ridiculous and completely unrealistic. I get that you are supposed to suspend belief to a degree when reading fiction but when an author sets out scenes or events where other people would be aware or involved and that is just ignored it annoys me. Any normal person would report what the bully does. Any normal person would run a mile from someone who is clearly psychotic. Everyone else (including adults) appear to just ignore the bully’s behaviour and it is never explained why. It cannot be just because his family founded the university.

Not much happens in the book and I felt it dragged. There was little background or world building and over all it was a slow burn.

I did not like the bully who was just plain psychotic. Not sad and misunderstood, just a nasty piece of work. Even if he did a 180 I would not be able to like him. The scholarship MC was just pathetic. So full of his own angst and focussed on his self flagellation but the the author refused to explain exactly what happened to make him as he is. She kept alluding to things but never explained and it just became annoying until I didn’t care. By the end of the book I just didn’t care about any of the characters. Despite the cliffhanger I won’t be reading the next book.

Interested in a three way? You might be after reading this book. In Perfectly Powerless, book one of the War at Waversea series, Abigail Cole brings to life three very interesting and complex characters. It's not often that I get to read three perspectives in a romance but this one really shines light on Rhys, Clayton and Harper, three completely fascinating characters - each with their own burdens that affect their choices.

In Perfectly Powerless, we are brought into the world of Waversea College - where Rhys Waversea is king, where Clayton, a scholarship student, refuses to bow before him, and where Harper, who was deafened in an accident, is just trying to have a normal college experience. Someone should have told her to pick a different school because there is nothing normal about Waversea. Rhys, who could be seen as the villain of the piece if the story were that simple, is one pissed off individual. He has his reasons for being the way he is - which is a - insert expletive here. When Harper refuses his advances and inadvertently picks Clayton over Rhys - at least in Rhys' mind - Rhys is determined to destroy her. And if messing with Clayton - the only other person who doesn't cower from him - is a byproduct of that, all the better. But soon Harper finds herself attracted to both guys and isn't sure what to do about it. The three move in a strange dance throughout the story which makes for a book you can't put down.

Perfectly Powerless is part bully romance, part college romance, part soapy drama - and I can't wait to read more from the series. Cole writes each character in an intimate way. She brings the reader into her world and soon we are living and breathing her characters, even the twisted ones. We desperately feel for them and crave what they crave, and we're just as wrapped up in their drama as they are. I can't wait to read the sequel to this story - I find myself not yet ready to abandon the world of Waversea. Perfectly Powerless is live now so you can download it and start off your New Year right.

Wow. Perfectly Powerless by Abigail Cole was a great debut to The War at Waverseas Series. It is a college bully/ second chance story told in three POV perspectives. In this story, we are introduced to Clayton, Rhys and Harper. Rhys is the obnoxious and rich spoilt kid and because his father donates ridiculous amounts to the school, everyone including the teachers, are at his beck and call. While it may sound like he's living the good life, Rhys has his own problems that he tries to escape in his own ways.
Clayton has had a rough past, and with his mother dealing with dementia living the life of someone else, trying to better his future so he can help his mother seems to be his second chance at redemption. Harper is a scholarship student like Clay. While she is not exactly disabled, she needs the help of a hearing aid after a traumatic accident left her hearing impaired. She hates being pitied and is a lot stronger than she seems.
She is the only girl on campus who is immune to Rhys's charms and he hates that. Every time he bullies her, she comes out on top, never letting his actions get to her. However, every time Rhys pulls a stunt, Clay is there as her savior. Harper is attracted to both guys, but can't handle the push-pull dynamic she seems to have with them. She wants Clay, and as much as he wants her, he seems to think he isn't good enough for her and pushes her away. She knows there's more to Rhys than the tormentor bully facade he shows, but he seems to only want her as a conquest. Both guys want Harper. She's like no other girl around, but what happens when one guy goes too far trying to destroy the other? Will Harper get caught in the crossfire?
I loved this story. It's a love triangle with one guy being the alpha douche and the other being the swoony hero. This was only part one in the series but now I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment as I need to know more. As I said, this was a fantastic debut to the series by Abigail Cole.

Perfectly Powerless by Abigail Cole is the first book in The War at Waversea Series. It is a contemporary dark bully romance that is not recommend for those under 18 or the faint hearted. It is narrated through the eyes of Clayton Michaels, Harper Addams and Rhys Waversea which I found helped to establish a more intimate connection with each character.

Clay has had a rough life but now he is focused on getting his degree and making his mother proud. There were somethings that happened which really made me sad for Clay. I liked how protective and sweet Clay was.

Harper was freaking amazing!!
I absolutely loved her so much and the fact that she was so different to other female characters that I have seen so far. I love how she stands up for herself and how she doesn’t let her accident define who she is. I really like her catchphrase shirts because they are hilarious and straight to the point.

Rhys is a smoking hot, tattooed, alpha jerk who uses his father’s wealth and power to make everyone fall at his feet. To keep the boredom at bay he likes to torment and intimidate everyone. He is selfish, cruel and incredibly obnoxious but there is something about him that draws me in There are no words to describe how much I absolutely loved Rhys Waversea and his seriously twisted personality. Underneath all of the pain, trauma and anger is someone looking for the slightest bit of happiness.

This was a brilliant book filled with heartbreak, anger, smoking hot guys, mind blowing sex, revenge and some pretty awesome characters. I can’t wait until the next book so I can find out what happens next.

#TeamRhys and I volunteer as tribute.

I recieved an advanced copy for free, and this is my honest opinion.

Harper Addams lived a few years in isolation from the world after an accident that took her parents and her hearing away. But she decided to go back to living, move out from her aunt’s to start college at Waversea. But first of all, she wanted to feel normal, without any pity or special treatment from others. The college is challenging her in many ways, but the biggest ones are Rhys and Clayton. Two complete opposites, one is a walking fire and the other is a rapid stream. They both intrigue and attract her in different way. But which one attracts her more?

At first,I was a little surprised that this book was written from three perspectives, it is not quite a common practice - but it went well. It gave me a better opportunity to meet all the book heroes. As far as their creation, I very much liked that the main character wasn't a little mouse, but she was able to stand up for herself when it was needed. As for the male character, I think that Rhys, who was a villain here, his behaviour sometimes was a bit exaggerated to look out for the evil one. Clayton, on the other hand, was the good one, but he couldn't decide what he wanted. The motif of the love triangle was an interesting idea, but I didn't feel that much chemistry with this story. Something was missing in this book, something that would make me drown in it and not be able to break away. I read it well, but no fireworks. Nevertheless, I am confident that it will find its admirers.

Rhys, Clayton and Harper!!!

Rating 3.5 stars

Although I read Perfectly Powerless, they were certain aspects that had me quite confused. The story is different from other bully romances and that made me read it to the end.   Clayton, Harper and Rhys are all damaged souls and their experiences are reflected in their actions.

The heroine was the highlight for me!  Harper was a delight.  She does not allow her disability to make her feel as though she is less.  I love how she stood up to those who felt she needed to be "a mouse".  Harper is attracted to both Clayton and Rhys.

Clayton is shy but carries serious guilt on his shoulders.  Clay is the gorgeous guy on campus who plays basketball.  He is scorned at school because he is on full scholarship which means he has to be  penniless. Weaversea is a rich school, so he faces pressure both from Rhys and the other kids.

Rhys is the face of the privileged child, his father owns the school and everyone knows this.  Rhys is also the school bully.  He gets away with anything that he wants, when he wants.

Can these three characters survive this college experience especially since both guys are also attracted to Harper?

Perfectly Powerless ends on a cliffhanger, I am ready to read book 2 to see where that goes.

Really intense bully romance!

WOW! This story made me so angry that I just wanted to scream and reach in and throat punch a few characters. It was so intense and shocking that I don’t think I have any fingernails left. It was one hell of an emotional rollercoaster ride.

Harper is one fierce woman. She’s smart, sassy and doesn’t take crap from anyone. Clayton is a sweet man but a bad boy with a dark past. You can’t help but fall in love with him and ache over his pain and anger. Rhys, on the other hand, is domineering, angry and a very nasty bully. He gets my blood boiling. I don’t know whether I like him or not. The dynamics between the three of them will keep you on your toes.

There is a lot going on in this story, some suspense, mystery, lots of angst and bullying, and little twists and turns along the way. It’s a story that will have you enthralled from the very beginning, right to the very end.

Highly entertaining to read with fantastic writing and phenomenal characters. I can’t wait to see how this story unfolds.

“We need to find our own reasons to keep moving forward, otherwise we might as well just jump and let fate have its way with us.”

Emoticons: 🥵🔺😏😎⛹🏻⛹🏻‍♂️📚

The plot of the book was great, I love each and every character in the book, especially Harper. Once I picked it up, I couldn’t put it down anymore but there was a few parts in the book where I felt it was a bit dragging. The book had a lot of tension, love-hate relationships, a bit of bullying and a love triangle. One of the parts I loved in the book is when they talked about having to stop living under the shadow of another person’s life and start living your own. Another part is holding onto the part that keeps us going. The reason why we would hold onto the ledge instead of letting ourselves fall. The ending of the book really took me by surprise and I cant wait for the next book in the series.

It was also nice that a few of the shadowed souls were featured in the book. I was actually trying to remember where the names came from because they were so familiar.

Perfectly Powerless by Abigail Cole is a dark bully contemporary college romance. This is the first book in The War At Waversea Trilogy.

The book does come with a warning "This is a contemporary dark bully college romance which may have triggers for some as there are dark love-hate themes, intense flashbacks and bullying, sexual scenes and some violence. Not recommended for under 18's or the faint of heart."

I was so excited to see that Abigail did a spin off of the Shadowed Souls series. I was hooked from the very beginning and couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. I am loving the chemistry between Harper, Rhys, and Clayton. Their are so many secrets that I can't wait to be spilled.

The book does end on a cliffhanger that left me begging for more. I can't for the next book to be released in February 2021 so I can more of this trio.

I would highly recommend this book if you like dark romance, bully romance, contemporary romance, or reverse harems.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. The story was unique, interesting, and kept me intrigued. I loved the characters and how they were different from the usual roles characters get in romance books. Rhys, the over privileged, rich, powerful, alpha hole was covered in tattoos and piercings. Clayton is the shy, damaged hero, that grew up poor and has a record yet he’s the gorgeous buff jock type. Harper, who I LOVE, is deaf and lived a sheltered life. I expected her to be shy and inexperienced and she shocked the hell out of me with her quick whit, fierceness, and strength. They were all so different than the typical characters I usually read. This book is set up like a love triangle but who knows where it’ll end up. I’m very excited to find out
It does end in a cliffhanger but that’s to be expected with book 2 coming soon

3.5 🌟

This story is told by the three main characters each giving us their POV. Not gonna lie that confused me a little to begin with but once I got a grip of who was who, I quite enjoyed getting everyone’s perspective.
The story itself is a bully/love triangle/reverse harem. Harper is our heroine, she is deaf but refuses to let her disability slow her down and is really quite the bad ass! Both of her love interests, Clayton and Rhys, are complete opposites but broken in their own way.
The story was well written, easy to read and although a bit of a slow burn it’s very addictive.
I can’t wait for book 2 to find out how the story continues. Will it remain a love triangle or is there a threesome coming up???

Great start to the series.

Abigail is an up and coming author who is definitely worth investing your time. Rhys is a bit of a psycho with an underlying agenda for his father and the college, can’t wait to see how that plays out. Clay is a lot gentler than you might expect from his up bringing. Harper is trying to find her place in the world with her disability without actually acknowledging her disability at times. I’m leaning towards Rhys more than Clay at the moment only for the fact the he takes what he wants regardless. Looking forward to book 2 where we will hopefully get an understanding of what happened to Clay’s brother, more on Rhys and his relationship with his horrid dad and hopefully Harper will end up with both guys because, why choose!!

I'm part intrigued and part confused.
This story is told by three different characters - Harper, Clayton and Rhys.
Harper is the heroine in the story. Armed with a disability that she refuses to let hinder her, she proves she's a bad@$$ time and time again.
Clayton and Rhys are her love interests. One is her champion and is her protector while the other pushes her buttons and bullies her. Both are broken but handle it in completely different ways. Oh, they also can't stand each other.
There are still a lot of unknowns as this is book one of a trilogy.
Is it wrong I'm HOPING for a threesome at some point? Each guy brings out different qualities in Harper and I'm still undecided which I am leaning towards (if she has to make a choice).

Perfectly Powerless by Abigail Cole was a great debut to The War at Waverseas Series. It is a college bully/ second chance story told in three POV perspectives.

Rhys & Clayton are great male main characters, they are different but equally broken at the same time. They seem to clash at every turn & really can not stand one another.

Harper was a great lead character, she does not allow her disability to make her feel as though she is less. I love how she stood up to those who felt she needed to be "a mouse".

All around this was a great book.

Perfectly Powerless was an incredible Bully romance read! I loved the story and it was very addictive!

The story is a love-triangle between the three main characters, Harper, Rhys, and Clayton. We get to see many different facades between the characters, and we get to see Harper's strength and fire.

It's a slow-burn, but it is so worth it! The tension can be felt through the pages and it is incredible! And the steam, hot!

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It was tense, steamy and i loved Harper. Great read!

Fascinating!

This was my first read of the year, and I absolutely loved it.

Three different POVs with equally distinguished characters and that's an equally hard task to attain. Even if I started reading mid-chapter, I could tell who's POV was presented before me. And that deserves a round of applause!

Harper won my heart with her badass attitude. I can't wait for the second book!!

Keep writing, Abigail! Not a lot of people can master the style of writing as you have. ☺️

I LOVED this book. Being a sign language interpreter, it was awesome to see one of the main characters being deaf. And also believably so for the most part.

I enjoy going into books without reading information about what they are about. That is what I did with this one. I loved the twists and turns the story took. I didn’t know who to root for most of the time (I didn’t know it was RH until the very end when the story was done and it talked about the next book in the series).

I can’t wait for the next book!!! It left in a cliffhanger, that’s for sure!

It a very complex and interesting story, so much so that it kept me glued to the pages. Clayton, Rhys and Harper are a weird trio but they somehow appeal to you. I have to admit that I don't quite understand why Harper waits to get to the limit before exploding and confronting the boys. all three have a past that marked them and perhaps this is what binds them together and the mutual attraction.
All in all, although I hate the cliffhanger ending I loved it, and once finished I started the second volume.

This book ended up being something different than what I thought. It is more of a love triangle. It started out well. It started setting the stage for the enemies to lovers theme to unfold, then somehow turned into a love triangle. Rhys behavior was over the top and unbelievable. Clayton was an ok hero. Harper was a strong heroine, not really needed either to succeed! I am voluntarily writing a review from an ARC.

Great Start

This book drew me in. I totally love Harper. She is a strong heroine. She finds herself attracted to two men who are completely different from each other. They also happened to dislike each other. Harper's relationship with both is filled with problems. I think we will find out there is a lot more to this story then the troubled relationships between the three. Will everything eventually work out. I can't wait to read the rest of the story to find out.

RH

The writing seemed pretty good, but it was a DNF for me. It wasn't clear in the description I had read that it was a RH which is definitely not my jam. I really liked that the h had a disability. Rhys came across as a bit over the top, but again, the writing seemed good (got to 33% and skimmed the rest) and you like RH and bully romances, you'll probably enjoy the book.

Welcome to the world of Waversea. A love triangle in which one strong, powerful woman walks in and swoops two guys' from beneath their feet. Harper is a fiery character that steals the show. I love her tenacity and fight throughout.

Except will the games Rhys and Clayton play make Harper run to one of them or away from both of them?

A hard choice to make or is it?
