First a dead body shows up on Harriet's favourite beach. Then she discovers the whole place is about to be bulldozed for a massive apartment complex. Harriet suspects the two events are connected, but proving it won't be easy. In fact, her investigation might be over before it's even started, because her boss is eager to avoid confrontation with the powerful Residents' Association. Quietly, Harriet starts digging into the dead man's identity, and she discovers a trail of secrets, lies and corruption. But her enquiries draw unwanted attention, and now someone will do whatever it takes to silence her... for good!
Simon Haynes is the author of the Hal Spacejock, Harriet Walsh and Hal Junior (MG) series. He divides his time between writing fiction and computer software, with the occasional bike ride thrown in for a laugh.
Entry #4 in Simon Haynes's 'Harriet Walsh' series; a series which I actually started reading after picking up Hal Spacejock (sometimes also known as A Robot Named Clunk) and was completely unaware that the two characters would cross-over in later books (I haven't reached that point yet in either series).
Unlike the previous entry in the series - Sierra Bravo - (which is pretty much a siege story), this is back to being more of a whodunnit, with Harriett and the Peace Force (what there is of them ... ) investigating when a dead body turns up at her favourite beauty spot, which just so happens to be about to face an important governmental vote on whether it can have an apartment complex built on it ...
Competent? Yes. Enjoyable enough? Yes. A few unforeseen twists and turns? Hmmm ... that depends upon how familiar with the genre you are!
Really enjoyed the four books, great development of the principle characters throughout the entire series. Was surprised that Harriet did not get promoted at the end given the duration and case been through. Perhaps a later story?
Just completed the fourth book of the series. They were all full of surprises and at the same time thought-provoking. What will our future be like and how can we react and relate to non-humans.
I can't believe it's the end of the adventures of Harriet Walsh! There is so much more that could be written about her! And the author clearly expressed that if he have enough good reviews, he will pursue, so, common! Make some nice reviews, folks!
A great addition to the Harriet Walsh Peace Force series. Harriet, Bernie and the crew protecting the planet the best they can. Can't wait for the next book.
