I received an advance ARC from the author for my honest review and I also purchased it from amazon.com. Something I like to do, too support one of my favorite authors.

It was the late author Bill Crider, with his 'Outrage at Blanco' novel that made me love revenge stories so much and in away revenge stories for me will always be a tribute to him.

With "Gunslinger", D.V. Berkom continues the Claire Whitcomb story, set in the Wild West, she's heartbroken having lost her family, yet she's tough as nail, just like with her Leine Basso series, she just grabs you the reader, puts you in the pages, has an intertwining storyline, nice to see a series like this in the Western genre based on a strong female character, it's good verse evil and like that she didn't just write a bland tamed down story.

Just meat and potato's, it doesn't get bogged down with too much detail, typical with her it's not for the faint of heart. The best thing with the author's writing is the support cast of characters, that she just brings to life, they play a role in telling the story and much like author Ace Atkins. They just seem too create support characters that just take over their book series.

At the first mention of the letter of introduction Wyatt Earp for when she arrives in Tombstone, your thinking Wyatt would play a role in the story and was nicely surprised that wasn't the case.

Really liked how Doc Holliday was a support character in this one, you see a different side to him, then the typical drinking scenes, or sickly ones you usually read regarding him, made "Gunslinger" more enjoyable and can't wait to start "Legend", the 3rd book in the series.

Definitely hope other Western readers, will give this series by D.V. a try, you'll like her writing, you'll also want to give her Kate Jones and Leine Basso series a try.

Historical fiction isn't my most-selected genre, I have to be honest. Not that I haven't enjoyed those I've read, however; I just seem to bypass the category. Now, I'm a big, big fan of DV Berkom. Her Kate Jones and Leine Basso series have been my favourite reads over the years, so I really had no hesitation in reading these three shorts, introducing a new kick-ass female, Claire Whitcombe. The only difference is, this lass is throwing her weight around in the late nineteenth century in the wild west. So, no NVGs, no GPS, no state-of-the-art weapons, no hi-tech correspondence or intel. Just her, her guns and her wits…and let's not forget we're talking pre the Emily Pankhursts of the world. Claire is in a man's world and she is awesome. In every sense of the word.

Book One (Retribution) plucks her out of a heart-breaking tragedy that moulds her future. Book Two (Gunslinger) follows her as she takes her first job as 'bodyguard' to a well-known actress. And Book Three (Legend) takes her to a place she never thought she'd find after her heart-break.

As readable, thrilling, compelling as all her other novels, Berkom transports you to Wyatt Earp and Jessie James country. But not in a John Wayne-clichéd way. There's been meticulous research and attention to detail.

Thoroughly enjoyable and if there are any full-length novels on the way, I'll be all over them.

Since - as far as I know - it has yet to be released as I write this, now's the time to mention that my review is based on an advanced ebook copy. My promise to the author was that, in exchange for the story I would read and review it.

This is the second book in a series by thriller author DV Berkom, a writer already established in that genre with her "kickass heroine" Leine Basso. It seems as though she (the author, not the heroine) had an idea from outside of that world, and committed it to a set of books. Three are planned, although I suspect that if they prove popular she'll at least consider a few more. After all, if people read them and they sell, why not?

As you can see, it doesn't get an unabashed five stars. I enjoy Berkom's work; I enjoyed Gunslinger. As a matter of fact I read it through without putting it down in a late night binge. And that's part of what cost a star in this review. For the character Claire Whitcomb, a recently widowed and grieving woman who saw her husband and children murdered and her homestead destroyed, things move very quickly. Far too quickly. In the first book, life altered with those deaths and losses, and she transformed from a puddle of grief into a fierce warrior. In this book, she's spent months learning to ride, rope and shoot and is leaving her town for Tombstone.

What we get is a very quick and cursory description of the process, and then she's in action, saving lives by killing bad guys on the train she's riding. She takes a turn at being the security for an actress, gets to Tombstone, meets Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp and Lucas Stone, and then moves on. Rather than develop Whitcomb in depth, or delve into how someone gets trained to ride, rope and shoot, or even take a lot of time with the world she's living in, Berkom has her roaring through the action and minimizing the character development.

As a non-stop action book, it's fun. It reads quickly and then leaves the reader anticipating the next volume, which is what a book in a series ought to do. But to this reader, it went by too fast, and that's a shame. Berkom's a good writer. There are flashes of her literary muscle here and there throughout - but those flashes signify to me that she may have sacrificed quality and depth for quantity and speed. The dialog and interplay between Whitcomb and Doc Holliday are a delight - but when they show up it makes clear that this could have been a whole lot more.

So this is a fun book. A quick read. I look forward to the next volume, just like I used to look forward to the next Spiderman or Fantastic Four comic books. I know I'll get a decent plot, action and a good story. It won't be the most memorable thing I read, but I'm certainly glad I took the time.

I was brought up reading Nancy Drew so of course my favourite type of book to read is mystery but when one of your favourite authors decides to jump ship and try branching out, of course you are going to go along for the ride. And boy what a ride it is, one that I loved. This is the second book in the series and only the second western book I have read in my life but if the rest are like this then maybe I will be giving them more of a try. Although D.V Berkom is a very talented author and she has a way of writing very strong leading females that you can't help but like. The pace is fast moving and doesn't let up until the last word, during that time the story is packed full of action and famous names (I did Google the names because I thought I recognised them). The only downside is I don't think the book was as long as her normal adventure, either that or I read to quickly. I can't wait for the next book.
Claire after losing her entire family decides she can't continue living in the town where it all went down places her horse on a train and sets out for tombstone. Before they get very far the train is held up by bandits and Claire proves once again that a lady is just as good as any man. A famous actresses life is threatened and when Claire comes to her aid she is asked to company her on the rest of her journey, as a body guard. But things aren't as simple it seemed none stop partying, the actress has made an enemy of a powerful man. Can Claire show the boys how a real gunslinger works and keep her alive?
I was given this free review copy book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Reading Stuff 'n' Things

I am not one for reading westerns or much historical fiction however, I am a fan of D.V.Berkom's work so was persuaded to read the first of the series "Retribution" and I surprised myself by enjoying it so jumped at the chance to read "Gunslinger" as I was itching to find out what Claire gets up to next.

D.V. has a great ability to create characters that you quickly become invested in and Claire is definitely one of those. D.V. also creates strong, female characters that don't take any grief from the supposedly stronger gender and, again, Claire is most definitely one of these but her job is made even harder given the time and location in which this book is set.

I'm not going to go into the plot here, you will just have to read it, but what I will say is that you really get absorbed and transported to the Wild West and you are quickly captivated by the characters and drawn into this action packed story so much so that, before you know it, it's over and you are left wanting more and herein is the only gripe I have ... it's not long enough but maybe that's because I read too quickly!

As I said, I usually give Westerns a wide berth as they are not my thing but this series has definitely made me think twice about doing this in the future and if you are of a similar opinion, I would suggest you do the same by giving this series a try ... you never know, you might change your mind and fine another genre to get your teeth into.

I am lucky to be a member of D.V. Berkom's ARTeam and was sent a copy of Gunslinger before the official publication date of 28-December-2020 in return for an honest, unbiased and unedited review and for which I am extremely grateful and I don't have to wait long for book 3, "Legend", which is due to be published in January 2021 and which is already sat in my to-be-read pile just waiting for my hungry little eyes to be engrossed once again.

Gunslinger – “Didn’t anyone tell you ladies can’t be gunslingers?”

“Too emotional,” he said only a moment before he breathed his last.

Don’t mess with Claire. We follow our heroine at the end of summer 1880 as she leaves Leadville, Colorado for Tombstone, Arizona Territory. She has spent the remainder of the summer polishing her gun (and bow-and-arrow and tomahawk and knife) fighting skills, ready to embark on the next stage of her life. She has an introductory letter to Wyatt Earp from her mentor, Leadville’s now-retired marshal, Mart Duggan, as she takes the newly connected railroad spur to Pueblo.

Along the way, Claire foils an attempted robbery of the train before they can safely traverse Royal Gorge. She takes on the role of security for a touring actress and her entourage and expects to ensure her safety on the way to Tombstone.

They are eventually transferred in Pueblo to the main line to New Mexico Territory. Where the train line ends, she and others headed to Tombstone transfer to stagecoach, although Claire elects to ride her beloved horse Rose as an outrider to the stage. The story carries on with mystery and suspense throughout the ride to Tombstone. Once arrived in the “town too tough to die,” Claire connects with the Earps and befriends Doc Holliday. She is further embroiled in the mystery of the attempts on the life of her thespian protectee and proves her worth as a true Gunslinger.

As in the first book in this series, ‘Retribution,’ ‘Gunslinger’ teases the reader to find out who Claire will become and where she goes in the future. And it kept me humming the tune of a favorite TV western from my teen years!

I received an ARC of ‘Gunslinger’ and voluntarily offer this as an unbiased review of a story that I enjoyed very much.

I love a good Western and I ESPECIALLY love a good Western when the gunslinger is a woman. Main protagonist Clair Whitcomb is THAT. Author D.V. Berkom outdid herself with Gunslinger. Claire lost everything of her past life and stayed the course. Strong woman that she is, she heads off into a new life all alone on her own. She meets up with other well built characters that intersect with her new life and become pluses to her life. GREAT plot. Loved the action. D.V. Berkom made SURE the reader was glued to the pages of a very well done book. I highly recommend Gunslinger, by D.V. Berkom as a great read. Gunslinger well earned its five stars. I am now following Author D.V. Berkom. There is a reason for that...which is...BERKOM makes all the right things HAPPEN in her books, when putting out a book. What a reader wants and enjoys is always there in her books, and Gunslinger is exactly THAT.
ENJOY!!!

Claire Whitcomb is my hero, what a woman, she has lost her family who were murdered in front of her. Claire has left her home in Leadville in search of a new career as a gunslinger. She finds herself employed as a body guard to an actress after a chance encounter on a train which is attacked. Claire is fearless refusing to conform to society's opinion she wears men’s clothes, or a specially adapted dress to allow easy access to her trusty pistol. On arrival in Tombstone a male environment she holds her own and proves that a woman can be an equal. She earns respect from the outlaws she has despatched and her ability to handle her pistol. Easy to read, constant action, great characters and Claire gets to meet Doc Holiday and Wyatt Earp.
I can’t wait for the next chapter in the story.

Claire Whitcomb leaves Leadville, Colorado, after loosing her whole family to renegade outlaws, is headed for Tombstone. With a letter of introduction to Wyatt Earp, Claire seeks a new life and new career in the Town Too Tough To Die. On the train ride she meets Isabella King, a well-known actress and mistress of railroad magnate Jay Gould. During a train robbery Isabella’s bodyguard is killed and she is saved by Claire. So then Isabella hires her as her new body guard. There is a lot more action and adventure for this group before they reach Tombstone. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat wanting to know what happens next. Is all the mishap just something of the wild west or is there a reason this group keeps finding trouble. Great Book.

Berkom has written another great western. The book is constant action from start to finish. This is the second book in the series, but you don't need to read the first one before reading this book. When you read this book you will want to know how Claire's story starts and you will want to read the first one. The story starts with Claire heading to tombstone on a train. The train is being held up and claire has to help save the people. From there she becomes a bodyguard for an actress who someone is trying to kill. A very good book from start to finish. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

This is the second book in the Claire Whitcomb series and it certainly didn’t disappoint. I’m already an avid fan of DV Berkom, and this new series is great. The main protagonist is a strong and likeable woman who has had more than her fair share of misfortune, but she’s come back fighting all the way! This is a great series, well researched, well written and easy to read. If you are a fan of westerns there are some names you will recognise. If you’re not a fan of westerns, then you definitely need to give this series a try – you just might get hooked! I highly recommend this book and looking forward to the next one!

Clair Whitcomb has come into her own in this book. She is finding out who she is under all of that past pain.
She can match many a man now and is not afraid to take charge.
Claire is a dynamo ready to spring into action where others are afraid to tread. She is now a leader of men now. Not a follower. This books bring the wife of farmer into a lone woman gunslinger with talents that will amaze the reader.
She listen, observes and acts.
D V Berkom has another strong female character that is going to ride not just into the sunset as a hero but into your heart.

This is the 2nd western by DV Berkom. Claire Whitcomb decides to head to Tombstone with a letter of introduction for her to give to Wyatt Earp. Her train is stopped by robbers and Claire has to put her shooting skills to the test. She ends up saving Isabella, an actress, and becomes her bodyguard for the completion of her journey. Strong female protagonist. Fast paced. Great storyline. I received a free advance reader copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Looking forward to reading the next installment in the Claire Whitcomb series.

The second book of The Claire Whitcomb Series, Gunslinger, is full of dangerous excitement. Traveling by train, stagecoach and horseback from Leadville, Colorado to Tombstone, Arizona is treacherous. The trip provides insight into the perilous circumstances during the 1880s. Claire educated in self defense and shooting by Marshal Mart Duggan and Thomas a Ute warrior stands up and successfully defends herself and fellow passengers. The multiple encounters earn Claire the name of Gunslinger.
The Claire Whitcomb series offers a different approach to exploring a women’s independence and abilities. The series is an excellent read.

After losing her family, Claire leaves Colorado for Tombstone, Arizona. While traveling on a train to her destination, the train stops and is being robbed. Claire goes into a private compartment and finds a gunman and shoots him. Claire meets Isabella, an actress, whose body guard has been killed. Isabella hires Claire as her body guard after seeing her protect the passengers with her shooting skills.
This is a very good western with action of gunmen trying to kill the two women. A page turning thriller.

This is a great western story. Read the first book about Claire Whitcomb whose family was killed
and she was charged with their murder. She was later found not guilty. She trained with a friend
who showed her how to shoot. She left the town to go to Tombstone for a place where know one
would know her. She is hired by an actress to be her body guard. She becomes friends with Earp and
Doc Holliday. They take her under their wing. This is a must for anyone who enjoys stories of
the west and about gunslingers. Can't wait for the next book about Claire and her adventures.

Claire Whitcomb’s family was murdered in Leadville Colorado and she obtains retribution as well as some valuable skills that were not possessed by most females in those times. On her own, Claire leaves Leadville en route to Tombstone. On the way her train is attacked and she plays a major role in it’s defense and is recruited to be a bodyguard for the famous actress Isabella King.

This is a different genre for D. V. Berkom whose forte is strong female leads but there is no disappointment to this book. The characters are well developed and believable as is the plot. Of course Claire is one of D.V.’s strong females.

I was honored that Ms. Berkom sent me an ARC to read and review and I really enjoyed the book. I have become a big fan of this author and this character. I definitely recommend this book and am looking forward to the next in the series.

D.V. Berlin writes absolutely brilliant female characters. This time Claire is in the old West with Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. After losing her family Claire makes her way with a letter of introduction, a peacemaker and a rifle. She has been though so much but is a stronf woman in a man's world. Some people accept her as a female Gunslinger, others don't! But, she proved herself time and again with her riding and shooting prowess. This is an awesome book and superb storyline....Do Not Miss This Book....

GUNSLINGER, D.V. Berkom continues Claire Whitcomb's story set in the Wild West during the 1880s. I haven't read many westerns in years, but I must say I enjoy Claire Whitcomb's adventures.

Claire and her family moved west in search of a new life and riches. Unfortunately, after witnessing her  husband and children murdered she quickly found out how women are treated in the wild west.

Claire left Leadville, Colorado to start a new life armed with her new survival training and a letter of introduction to Wyatt Earp. While traveling to Tombstone her train is attacked and she uses her new found skills in it’s defense and ends up as the bodyguard to actress Isabella King. Soon after arriving in Tombstone, Claire meets Doc Holliday. Doc takes her under his sheltering arm and proceeds to improve her shooting skills and chances to survive the wild west.

This is a fast paced read with excellent characters and an exciting plot. My one complaint, it was over too soon.

Berkom has done it again! Claire Whitcomb can’t even move away quietly. The train she’s taking is attacked by robbers and she finds herself as a bodyguard to a famous actress, whose bodyguard was killed in the attack. The actress is targeted for death as she witnessed a murder in NY. Through stage coach travels and rest stops on their journey through the Wild West, Claire is challenged on many fronts. The pace is fast and I wasn’t able to put the book down until I finished it.

Another great book in the new D. V. Berkom western series.
I loved the interaction with the real people of the time.
The characters are so strong and the action so intense I felt I was actually present on a number of occasions.
Claire is a strong character and a pioneer of the feminine hero but with a twist. Ahead of her time.
Once I started to read I had to finish it all in a single session, compelling doesn't really say it strongly enough.

Fantastic book 2 in this western series that will leave you wanting more from the
edgy, kick-ass Claire! Gunslinger can be read as a standalone but why would you?? Fast paced,
thrilling and the compelling descriptions of characters and places immerse you in the
late 19th century wild west. A refreshing and welcome change from the 6-7 genres I typically read. Action packed from start to finish that will take you through a myriad of emotions and highly recommend!

Fabulous. Our author has done it again! She’s taken us in a wild ride! Out heroine, Claire has shown us what a skilled and brilliant character she is. She’s making a name for herself in the oh so Wild West. She fouls a train robbery, becomes a body guard with a delft quality that makes her amazing. Using some famous people from history Berkom has made this book come to life. You gotta love the story as well as the characters. Hurray DV. You have out done yourself.

It has been long time since I read a Western novel but Gunslinger by Claire Whitcomb was a really good book. The plot is good and no twist to it but the book is a very good exciting read. I sure enjoyed it and now will look for more D.V. Berkom Western Novels. Most of this book was based on the town of Tombstone and that in itself caught my interest.

Another excellent book by D.V. Berkom! The second book in
The western series, continues the adventures of Claire. As
She travels to Tombstone, Claire meets Isabel King an actress.
Their train gets robbed, people fight the bandits and chaos ensues.

A true western, except a woman saves the day instead of the man.
A most readable series. I can't wait for the next one!

Okay, so very strong female character, completely unexpected in this period, going to meet Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday - just wow! Doc has always been a favourite of mine, untraditional, against the grain and so sarcastic! This makes for one hell of a read. Impossible to put down for a woman who has an an active dislike for western fiction. This is a definite one click book.
