Cassidy is a witch in a small town called Clockview, one of the last places in the world where witches live. Cassidy runs an inn, and like everyone else in Clockview she’s terribly excited about the most important night of the year, which is coming soon. The Night of Spirits and Phantoms has been taking place every summer for as long as Cassidy can remember. It’s a witch celebration, but the humans in Clockview don’t know that. This year there’s a murder as the big night approaches, and on the night of the murder, a knock-your-socks-off-handsome stranger comes to stay at the inn. Cassidy investigates the murder against her family’s wishes and discovers that the killer is no one she ever suspected, someone willing to risk the death of all witches in pursuit of a particular goal. Along the way Cassidy discovers that young witches have power beyond what she thought possible, and that you can solve the crime if you just put your mind to it. Formerly published as 'Clockview
Hello! I'm the author of the Witch Way to Mintwood series and the Spooky Business series! I live in New England and love it. I survive the winter by layering, good-natured complaining, and more layering. In case you were wondering. Hearing from readers is always lovely, so come visit me here:
This book read like a promising first or second draft. For example: “It turned out that she was from one of the founding families of the town; her ancestor had been a founder.” That just says the same thing twice and there were SO many passages like that, or where the author repeated something from a page or two before, sometimes many times. Also, there were a lot of things that were just insufficiently explained - particularly the significance of clocks. If it weren’t for the repetitiveness, it would have been a fairly enjoyable read, but the finale also just felt a bit random and insufficiently clarifying.
Cassidy has a full inn due to the coming festival, she is really excited for the upcoming events. Cassidy even books a room that noone ever wants. Cassidy meets the guest that is there, Cassidy can't help but appreicate his looks and the way he is. When there is a murder, someone she knows is a suspect. Cassidy decides to that she needs to look into it. Something bigger is happening Cassidy and her friends will have to figure out before everything is lost.
This was a good first book in series. You really don't know who was behind the everything until the end. I am looking forward to see who the characters develop in future books and see what happens next for Cassidy, her magic and what happens with her family.
Until the end, there really wasn't much magic done by any of the characters. As the story progressed, you learned why they had less magic, but they didn't do any for most of the book. Other than broom riding, interacting with ghosts and talking to cats. There are hints of magic with the clocks breaking and mysterious deaths, but no magic being performed by our main characters. I expected something from witches. The mystery was good and I never caught on to who the killer was. I liked the friendship between Cassidy, Katie and Ruth, and expect more adventures for them in the future
I enjoyed the characters in this book but I would have liked to know more about the history of the town of Clockview. Perhaps this will be explored more in further books. The 2 murders that occurred didn't make a lot of sense in the grand scheme of things - they were more a "casualty of war" by the person responsible. I did enjoy the book but not quite enough to give 5 stars.
The characters were very real for this story strong women bound together running a business and doing very well. The mystery was great loved it that at the real murderer was the police witch. Great read !!
Between the author's editing reminders and the misused words, 3 stars is the best I could do. The people with ARCs obviously didn't really read this book.
