If you’re keen to read several stories about real people. Interesting stories. The kind where you get lost in their world and wish to learn more...this is your book! I devoured it in a day so now I follow Jimmy on substack to get more.
The kind of book that you will return to again and again, an expansive collection of microfiction. You can fill your imagination with a whole world by reading just 100 words. You can get a zoomed-in view of a specific moment in a life vastly different from yours or of a moment in a life that resonates with your own. This is one of those books that I know I will keep within easy reach for years to come!
An entertaining and interesting read, but maybe not the perfect book to get lost in after a bad day as, on average, it leans dark. My appreciation for the particular literary form grew as I bobbed and weaved my way through characters and settings, some with seriously amazing potential. Some stories made me cringe, some made me smile, a few made me laugh out loud, all of them made me think. I would really look forward to a next book in which the author's favorite 10 or 20 characters are knotted together with the same deep and thoughtful wit.
100-word stories. 365 of them. Jimmy Doom is an expert in observation, and he does it so well in these stories of the human condition. Do yourself a favor and pick this book up and give it a read. If one story isn’t your thing, it’ll be over quick, and the next one might be your favorite.
With earnestly authentic and beautifully written satire, fun, compassion, rebelliousness, and more, in Beings, Human, Doom brilliantly paints a picture of the unending depths of the human condition and reminds us what it means just to be. I read most of the stories as Doom published them online, and was happy to see the book arrive so I could read the rest.
Great book for short bites of fiction. Hors d'oeuvres of the literary oeuvre. Amazing how he can covey plot and character in each 100 word short story.
An entry of 100 words each day for one year is very different from anything I have ever read. The variations among stories are wide, both in substance and in format. All come across as very real due to language or details attributed to the characters portrayed. As someone who lived in Detroit for many years, some of those details may be more recognizable, but any reader can appreciate all the accounts even if some details aren’t ones with which they’d be familiar. As a collection, they are very readable and, in the end, quite spectacular.
As a scholar of English, and one who teaches it as well, quite simply put: I am utterly blown away. Captivated by the energy of a completely different story on every page, I find myself marveling at both the creativity, as well as the one-liners. This book brings audible comments from my lips, as I silently devour the pages. Do yourself the pleasurable favor of buying this book. Its indulgence will find you ravishingly reading, devouring, wanting more. Well done, Mr. Doom.
Jimmy Doom has lived and worked the dark streets of Detroit, and he condenses what he’s seen, heard and felt in 365 thought-provoking pieces of micro fiction: 100 words a day for an entire year. As impressive as it is imposing, it’s hard not to find something to move you here.
Jimmy puts himself fully heart and soul into each story he writes, and as you read each one you can feel it. From gritty to humorous to saddening to uplifting, each singular story is an experience unto themselves.
After finishing I got thinking “when did I start?” It seemed been reading for a long time as I pick up randomly and read a few at a time. Started 4/23/21. Finished 4/22/22. Freaky!!
A fascinating read in that it's format is unheard of. 100 word stories which have a grabber, a plot and a surprise ending. This author has a great imagination, and I look forward to more from him.
