There’s no time limit on grief, not where the loss of one’s child is concerned. Child loss is indescribable; children should never predecease their parents.
Poems have always been Cathy’s release. After her son Matthew died unexpectedly from a rare heart cancer (after receiving an artificial heart and then a donor heart, both in under two months), she began writing a poem every month on the eleventh, the monthiversary of his death, along with other poems commemorating meaningful dates, some of which she posted on social media.
Words describing grief and pain are limited—or are they endless? She doesn’t know. But she ended this book of poems on the third anniversary of her son’s death—March 11, 2020.
Family and friends suggested Cathy publish these poems to help other grieving parents. Although she's aware nothing can completely heal a broken heart, she hopes her words will give a little comfort to others suffering as she is; at the very least, to know they're not alone. Writing these poems helped her deal with her loss—and still does. She also wanted to keep her son's memory alive.
She continues to write poems to memorialize Matthew and plans to publish those poems, as well.
