Nova Nelson grew up on a steady diet of Agatha Christie novels. She loves the mind candy of cozy mysteries and has been weaving paranormal tales since she first learned handwriting. Those two loves meet in her Eastwind Witches series, and it's about time, if she does say so herself.

When she's not busy writing, she enjoys long walks with her strong-willed dogs and eating breakfast for dinner.

Past and present

Rather too much flicking back and forth between the past, well various pasts, and present..

A vampire is murdered with a stake in the Asylum. Bloom and True are determined to crack the latest case even though it seems to involve Malavic and some rather naughty memories for them both.. and a return to them for Ruby.

We learn of Malavic's life before he was turned and also deal with the unexpected spirit of the murdered vampire. But is Malavic guilty of murder like the spirit claims?

The dodging between past and present didn't really resonate with me. It seemed more of an excuse to pad out a shorter tale into a novel than an essential part of it. I do recommend though that if you read this far you continue with the follow up series about the Eastwind Witches which is where Nelson really improves and forms a much stronger cast and better more fluid style. Are these essential reading first? No but there are a few little bits and pieces that are referred to or that will provide a little bit of background that locks them all together. Worth reading.. yes, but essential.. not really.

Vampires....Murder....the Count's Backstory!!!

A most excellent addition to the Eastwind saga, Vampire's Ire finds Sheriff Gabby Bloom and old friend Ruby True called to the scene of a murder...of a vampire?! The tale flips back 109 years,100 years, 9 years ago and present day Eastwind. While neither Gabby or Ruby recognize the dead vampire, neither can they pinpoint exactly why the vampire has a spirit who communicates with psychic Ruby. Interwoven with the murder mystery is the backstop of Eastwind's own solitary vampire (& town treasurer), Count Sebastian Malcavic. Finally! The tantalizing hints of his affairs with both Bloom & True, and more of his life is revealed within the pages of this 3rd Bloom & True mystery.
A satisfying story for all Eastwind fans--be they witches, were-elks, genies, or mere mortal readers. Best read after the main Eastwind novels, but isn't strictly necessary.
I highly recommend ALL of Nova Nelson's Witches of Eastwind series, along with the Bloom & True mysteries, and this installment, Vampire's Ire.

Sheriff Gabby Bloom & Eastwind Fifth witch Ruby
True share a past with the towns resident vampire Sebastion Malavic . He has a past like everyone in Eastwind. We find out details about when he became a vampire. The they each have pasts with Malavic that dates back many years. While Bloom & True sit drinking tea, they share memories & regrets. They are called by owl to Veris Bluffs asylum. There’s been a death. This death is extremely odd. True tries to use her skills of speaking with spirits when they need help crossing over, but this spirit has a lot of baggage to clear up first. They find a resident of the dangerous side of the unit who has an actual suite to live in, not a cell. She’s special. Not like anyone we’ve met previously in the series. Who killed the victim? What is the resident in the suite? What’s her plans. How is she involved the the murder? This is a sleuthing mystery that will keep you confused until the last page.

The third book in this series is amazing! Nova created an incredible paranormal murder mystery that have Ruby True and Sheriff Gabby Bloom trying to figure out what happened and who did it. We are taken on a roller coaster ride through the murder of a vampire. But vampire's can't be murdered, so how did that happen? Then when her ghost confronts Ruby things get even more interesting. But how did the vampire get into the locked room of the waif who is in there and why? And who exactly is she and what is the gem that was found have to do with anything. Round and round we go and add to that we are given the backstories of Ruby, Gabby and the vampire, Count Malavic intertwined. Wow! No way can you put this book down once you start. I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

I love learning the backstory of some of the characters we met in the Eastwind Witch books. In this book, not only do we learn more about Ruby True and Sheriff Bloom but we also lean more about Count Malavic. When another vampire is murdered at the asylum it's a "locked room" mystery for Ruby and the sheriff. Where did the vampire come from? How did she get into the asylum? Why does she re-appear as a ghost when vampires have no soul? All these questions and more, including who killed her, are answered. The mystery is well written and kept me guessing until the end. Another five star book from Nova Nelson

I certainly hope the author writes more of these delicious stories about middle-aged Fifth Wind Witch Ruby True and her friendship and investigative partnership with immortal angel Sheriff Gabby Bloom.

These three stories were absolutely terrific reads and riveting murder mysteries, as all the Eastwind Witches books are. There are such interesting and complex characters among the townsfolk that I hope these stories appear for a long time. I'll be waiting to snatch up and devour every single one.

Another great addition to the series. This book gives a lot of background which shows the way in which Sheriff Bloom, Ruby True and Count Malcavic - Eastwind's only vampire, interact and how well they know each other. A vampire is found murdered and nobody recognises her, as there is only one vampire in Eastwind and it isn't her. The body is found at Eastwind's asylum and no-one knows how she got in there in the first place. So many questions to answer.

Brilliant series

I have just finished all the Eastwind series and the Runy True books, I thoroughly enjoyed them all and would recommend them to anyone who enjoys the thought that that somewhere there is a place with no cars, internet or any of the modern day trappings and instead of email owls will deliver your mail for you. So, pick a comfortable chair, a cup of coffee or tea and a chocolate croissant and enjoy.

This is a great book in the series not to be missed. I loved the interactions between Ruby and the Sheriff Bloom. They work really well together in this book. When a vampire shows up dead in the asylum/spa outside Eastwind, Ruby and the Sheriff are called in to solve the mystery. I love the characters in this series and this murder brings lots of surprises. Read and enjoy!

What a great book!

What makes this book stand out is the humor. The snarky kind. Ruby and Bloom together are such a dynamic duo, and I love them! And the vampire: I always thought Count Malavic was an interesting character, and it’s nice to get to know more about him. Such a wonderful book, if you’ve not started this series yet, you’re seriously missing out!

This is a super fascinating mystery! In it there is a new kind of creature…ok…actually two! There is also a seemingly impossible murder which introduces an impossible victim. I enjoyed reading this latest adventure of Ruby True and Gabby Bloom! I also got a look into who Sebastian Malavic was or is. Awesome book!

This book gives a lot of unknowns about Ruby True, Gabby Bloom and Sebastian Malavic. I loved the book and found it very interesting how all the time lines connected together to bring the whole story together. These books always seem too short even though they aren't short stories. They are just so good that I want to keep reading so I will just have to wait for the next one to appear.

Good read

Book 3 has humor, some references to sex, sadness, and mystery. But a lot of self reflection on Ruby's and Gabby's parts. Another murder brings the pair together with the vampire, Sebastian, and the story discusses previous and present relationships with both women. Its well written and holds your interest. Highly recommend.

True friends

Lots of history is this one, the girls have quite alot in common. Loneliness is a major theme, as well as lost love and poor decisions. But so is the bonds of friendship that come from sharing one's joys & pain with another soul.

Funny

Funny and interesting. Love the characters and learning more about them. I do miss Nora but Ruby and Bloom are great. It's also nice to see Clifford and more of his personality, as he was mostly just resting in front of the fire.
Hope there are more books coming.

I don't know about other readers, but I learned more than I needed (or wanted) to know about Sebastian Malavic and his relationships with Gabby / Ruby / Sophia / Anastasia.

Still planning to read more books by this author.

As much as I enjoyed this story, I found it very confusing as it kept jumping backwards and forwards in time, I didn't find it very linear and easy to follow.
