A Gay Werewolf Romance.

Caught between danger and devotion, how far would you go to defend your pack?

Sage Kaelan has a unique talent of getting himself into danger. As one of New York City's best homicide detectives, it isn't easy to ignore the constant call of trouble and gore. At least, that's what he tries to tell his overprotective and brooding boyfriend, Rhys Becker, even if he knows it might be a lie.

Rhys is dangerous, beautiful, and a werewolf. As the Alpha of New York City, he is easily the most powerful being in the world. But when Rhys begins to lose his control over his shift, he slowly becomes aware of a bond that sends him reeling, and one he'd never thought possible.

But everything is not as it seems. After a homicide case unleashes a sequence of events that neither Sage nor Rhys are prepared for, they soon find themselves entangled with a danger that threatens to rip them apart. With the help of Sage's partner and best friend, Kai, Rhys and Sage navigate a dark web of pack politics, masquerade balls, and a crash course in what it means to be a pack, even as a greater danger looms. And one that might succeed in ripping them apart.

This is a first novel from an ambitious young author, so I rounded up despite some odd missteps. It’s interesting that the author discarded the paranormal romance “formula” where a young detective meets a stranger in the course of an investigation, relies on dialog to set the world building, and uses new relationship energy and sexual tension to propel the story. Instead she focused on the established relationship between a human detective and a werewolf, showing emotional growth as they move from jealousy and possessiveness to trust and mutual consent. The friendship between Sage and Kai was lovely. (She had some women in leadership positions, but I don’t remember them talking to each other about anything other than the guys.) I think the author has a lot to say and has good motivations for her characters and inclusiveness in cross-species LBGTQ-friendly literature. I look forward to seeing her grow into her talent.
