A chosen servant left for dead A pair of hunters with hidden secrets A fateful choice of who to trust…
The young cowboy Teer has joined the rogue El-Spehari demigod Kard in his work as a bounty hunter. Both have powers they conceal, but they are determined to guard the people of the Unity’s Eastern Territories.
When a favored servant of the Unity’s Spehari ruler is beaten and left for dead, the two bounty hunters are hired to track the attacker into the wilderness. The Unity has betrayed them both, but they still believe in justice.
Capturing the fugitive is only the first step. Teer faces a harsh question: when a beautiful young woman begs for protection, what is more important—her crimes…or why she committed them?
Glynn Stewart is the author of over 60 books, including Starship’s Mage, a bestselling science fiction and fantasy series where faster-than-light travel is possible–but only because of magic.
Writing managed to liberate Glynn from a bleak future as an accountant. With his personality and hope for a high-tech future intact, he lives in Southern Ontario with his partner, their cats, and an unstoppable writing habit.
I both received an ARC and bought the Patreon copy of this book prior to downloading it on Amazon. I'm supposed to give an unbiased review in return for the free copy...which I would do anyway, because I'm not a dishonest person.
That being said...there's a reason I got a free copy and, once again, paid for a copy. Glynn is really quite a talented writer. He can make you love his characters no matter what faults they have. The plots are always interesting and there aren't obvious loopholes.
This second book featuring Teer and Kard is another very well executed book. We learn enough more about both of the main characters to keep us satisfied yet you know there is much left to explore in their world. It hasn't quite turned into an epic tale yet, characters are still being introduced, but you can feel something big is going to happen.
I love that it feels like the old west but also still feels like fantasy (being set on a different world with magic AND guns and horses will do that).
Blood Ward is the second book in this series, but it's been a while since I read the first one, and to be honest, though this was a decent story, it didn't strike me as being all that interesting. It's likely I would have liked it much better when I was younger, since I liked westerns at that point, and this one despite being scifi/fantasy has that western vibe to it, but after reading a couple dozen westerns, I grew jaded to them, since it was almost always the same story simply retold in endless ways. I have no idea at this point if I'll read more in this series or not, but if so, it's likely to be much later on, after I've forgotten what the series was about. On the other hand, for those who enjoy westerns, frontier scifi, or just a decent story about an interesting fantasy world, this story might suit just fine.
Stewart, Glynn. Blood Ward. Teer and Kard No. 2. Faolan’s Pen, 2020. The Teer and Kard series is a western buddy story about a pair of bounty hunters, but there is a catch. It is not set on Earth but somewhere where the gunfighters are as likely to cast a spell on you as shoot you. The cattle-ranching economy is run by a patriarchy called the Unity. Beyond the Pale there are tribesmen with Yoda-like shamans who can improve the magical abilities of their acolytes. Kard, an outcast nobleman, and Teer, his magically bound servant buddy, search for a killer who may be more victim than villain. Stewart has pretty good luck putting a lot of different genre tropes in a blender to see what sort of story emerges. It does seem to end and begin in medias res, but that is an almost unavoidable problem with a series of novellas. Stewart is a journeyman writer. I will keep reading this series. 3.5 stars.
I received a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I'm not generally a fan of Westerns. That said, I did enjoy this book. As always, the author's characters carry the book and make me enjoy the read. This was a quick read with plenty of adventure and mystery to keep me reading the series. The ending is a good conclusion to the story while leaving plenty of room for the next book in the series.
I weirdly happened upon this series. I have read some of the author’s other work which is probably why it was recommended in the first place. I am not a big fan of westerns but there is enough magic and world building that I was hooked on the story. My complaints are the book wasn’t long enough and some of the terms for time messed with my thinking. I really hope there will be a third book in the series.

This is a novel and series that I truly like. I love science fiction and this setting on another world is extremely thought provoking. The America west level of civilization in these novels I find truly enjoyable. I can't wait for the next book in this series. Please make them longer. They fly by to soon!
I never really liked Western in the past, but had read other books from Flynn Stewart. So I tried the first book and was impressed by the world the author is building for this series. This was the next installment, which at the end seemed a little short but may have just been because the story flowed well. Good job!
Great story which continues to build an interesting world worthy of more stories. I will continue to read and enjoy these. Excellent writing and world building from the author.
Good action, good rescues, marvelous monsters. Shoot-ems-up like the best western. Maybe no true love but some sex on the side. No matter what you do, somebody ain't gonna like it.
A great addition to the series. I thoroughly enjoyed this next step in Teer and Kard's journey and just like book one it ended too soon. I cannot wait see what answers await in book three.
I just read the 2nd book inthe series and I’m looking forw.ard to the next one, Very good world building and back story. I like the open questions on who Kard is and his role in the revolution.
Characters are excellent. Plot is good, if a bit thin , but enjoyable. It’s a good popcorn book. That’s what I call them. Sit in your chair, eat some popcorn and enjoy. It won’t fill you up but it’s good stuff
Another incredible book by Glynn Stewart, another world, strange magic and customs... Great characters, interesting story. I can’t wait for the next book!
Teer and Kard have a short adventure, saves a damsel and left the reader wanting more. This is an interesting world. Gave it a four as it was to short.
A different world, a different “West”, no less wild, but certainly more full of magical beasts and peoples. All together a fun read, my only complaint is that there’s no more to the series after this.
