A billionaire with a broken body. A broken woman who has sworn off love. Sometimes, it takes a second chance for a happily ever after. Cassandra I boarded a plane expecting the flight to take me to another boardroom conquest. What I least expected to win was the affection of the passenger in 10C. There is something you should know, Ryan Steadman. I’m a pro at hostile takeovers. I know how to protect my heart from one.
Ryan I’d trade every dollar I’ve earned to unbreak my body. In business, I can put back together the lives that others tear apart. Others like Cassandra Lewis. Of course, she also happens to be the only woman who has given me hope for the second chance I never dreamed possible.
It appears fate just forced our hand, no choice but to put our differences aside. Maybe if I can put Cassandra’s heart back together, she’ll no longer be the enemy. Maybe Ryan is worth casting aside the reputation I use to hide my heartbreak. Maybe love can conquer all.
Until, in the face of danger, our lives and love hang in the balance. I can't protect her. The only way to keep her safe is to let her go forever. Without him, can I be the woman he showed me I might be? And if I am, will my love be enough to convince him to fall again?
After Fallen, After Never, and After Broken are a series of connected characters and plots each with their own happily ever after. They can be read in any order.
Between my longer audiobooks (I'm on a 30 hour one right now), I like to read fluffy romances. This fit the bill.
Fitting my preferred "wounded hero" trope, I wasn't really sure what to expect. I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover and all that but... I don't know if it's the models or the pose that was already a bit off-putting before I started reading.
This book was a little less than meh. It had some cute moments, but I thought the writing was a bit hard to follow in some spots. The plot twist at about the 70% mark seemed to really come out of nowhere and the impact of that event seemed like a massive overreaction without enough conclusion.
The initial progression between the two characters as enemies to lovers was one of the best aspects of this book, but once the "I love you's" started, it just seemed to go off the rails.
General thoughts: 1- Characters were inconsistent, and not just because of growth... One personality aspect would be established, then completely subverted the next page, consistently. 2- What do these characters actually do to be this filthy rich? Ryan got a big settlement and invested and now is some sort of billionaire?? Not exactly clear. 3- Blocking of scenes. There are several scenes where there are many moving characters and I have no idea what is happening (the big plot twist is one example). 4- Ryan's disability. Cut to black is fine for many aspects... It's a romance novel, not a "how to live as a paraplegic" guide, but as I've critiqued in similar novels... The disability is there as a plot device and conveniently becomes irrelevant or forgotten at other points. It makes me sad because it diminishes the value of having a disabled hero or heroine.
Ruthless bitch of a heroine written clinically by someone not wanting to draw me into the story. Business deal, insult people, make people squirm, power trip. Move on, because she's too awesome to develop any sort of real characterization of her.
Enter too-perfect man on the plane with a come-on line or twelve that are banal and would annoy the heroine more than they annoyed me. He's so handsome, she's taking his last name as hers mentally, all while putting in her headphones to ignore him? Yeah, this is... not working, already.
If you haven't got me even eyeing the bait by 8%, there's no hookin' the fish. I'm not interested. Sorry.
No stars. Yup. Deserves nothing. I loved the premise but it fell short in every way possible. There were very brief but cute moments but that didn’t make up for what I was reading.
I would have DNFed but I was trapped on a plane and didn't have anything else downloaded.
This could have been good. There were moments here and there, but mainly it didn't make sense.
Timelines were wonky. The plot got super wonky. The levels of super wealth didn't even make sense. The way the characters acted didn't make sense. The locations were inconsistent. The sentences themselves were confusing.
There is something here that could have been good (business rivals who meet on a plane, sparks fly, and then they meet in the board room and their different perspectives and objectives keep them at odds. Then his altruism melting her cold heart and teaching her how to love. That could be good!), it just didn't work.
That said I loved everything surrounding the brothers wedding. The moments of good made me that much more irritated at the rest of it not living up to the potential.
I'm not a typical romance reader so I can't compare it to others. However, I really enjoyed this. There were a number of twists in the story that kept me engaged. It was a quick and fun read that I highly recommend.
It is true to life...Life isn't all WONDERFUL from the first kiss! Thanks Whitney for reminding us all that love can be a full time job! The pay is extremely wonderful!
I've read one or two billionaire books but this was the first time the guy flaunted it so dang much. That and the endless pity party at the end of the book with the senseless makeup are what brought this down to four stars.
