The Claire Whitcomb Western Series: Retribution Gunslinger Legend
Historical fiction isn't my most-selected genre, I have to be honest. Not that I haven't enjoyed those I've read, however; I just seem to bypass the category. Now, I'm a big, big fan of DV Berkom. Her Kate Jones and Leine Basso series have been my favourite reads over the years, so I really had no hesitation in reading these three shorts, introducing a new kick-ass female, Claire Whitcombe. The only difference is, this lass is throwing her weight around in the late nineteenth century in the wild west. So, no NVGs, no GPS, no state-of-the-art weapons, no hi-tech correspondence or intel. Just her, her guns and her wits…and let's not forget we're talking pre the Emily Pankhursts of the world. Claire is in a man's world and she is awesome. In every sense of the word.
Book One (Retribution) plucks her out of a heart-breaking tragedy that moulds her future. Book Two (Gunslinger) follows her as she takes her first job as 'bodyguard' to a well-known actress. And Book Three (Legend) takes her to a place she never thought she'd find after her heart-break.
As readable, thrilling, compelling as all her other novels, Berkom transports you to Wyatt Earp and Jessie James country. But not in a John Wayne-clichéd way. There's been meticulous research and attention to detail.
Thoroughly enjoyable and if there are any full-length novels on the way, I'll be all over them.
If, like me, you tend to bypass the Western or Historical Fiction genres thinking they might be boring or not what you usually enjoy, can I give you a little advice? Don't ... take a look at the blurb and if it sparks even a little light of interest, give it a go ... you never know, you might enjoy it. I have certainly enjoyed this series and it is way off what I normally read.
This is a very satisfying third and, supposedly the last, book in the series featuring Claire Whitcomb with Retributionbeing the first and Gunslinger being the second. Claire is a strong female in a time when strong females were frowned upon and she has to work doubly hard to follow the line of work she wishes and to prove herself amongst a world full of men; she does this with grace, dignity and style in this story filled with action and adventure set in the Wild West.
What I particularly enjoy is the references to real historical figures and places such as Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp, Calamity Jane, Tombstone and the OK Corral; these are people and places I have grown up with (my dad and husband being avid Western watchers) and with adding a great character like Claire in amongst it all brought it to life even more for me.
My only gripe, which has continued over the three books, is that they aren't long enough ... you no sooner start when you have finished but maybe that's my fault and I read too quickly!
Having said that, I still highly recommend this series and D.V. Berkom as a whole; you won't be disappointed with anything she writes because, let's face it, what's not to like - great characters, immersive stories that transport you to different times and places, action, adventure, thrills and spills; she writes about it all with the bonus of the lead characters being strong females that aren't afraid to kick some behinds! So, have a look at her back catalogue and get reading.
I am lucky to be a member of D.V. Berkom's ARTeam and was sent a copy of Legend before the official publication date of 12-January-2020 in return for an honest, unbiased and unedited review and for which I am, once again, extremely grateful.
Legend – last (so far) of a tantalizing new series
March 1881, and Claire has wintered in Tombstone without getting into too much trouble, but there are some clouds on her horizon, and not only late winter snow. Claire has taken on as a shotgun messenger with the local stage service and is on her way out the door for a day’s run when she is attacked by a woman who claims to be her friend Doc Holliday’s wife! “Big Nose Kate,” so called more because she has her nose in many enterprises, not always her own, has come hunting for Doc and found Claire. Disrupting things is Kate’s chief activity throughout this last volume of Claire’s story, but Claire’s challenges only begin here.
Along the way, in ‘Legend,’ Claire will have to sort out her ambitions as gunslinger and friend to Holliday and the Earps. She will find herself involved in the aftermath of a deadly stagecoach robbery for which Doc Holliday is accused and tried, and she independently seeks out the real culprits.
After a summer of heat, and the greatest fire in Tombstone’s short history, Claire is watching the developments leading up to – and following – the gunfight at the OK Corral. Mixed into the action of the historical years of ’81-‘82, is the delivery of a murderer to Tucson, and running into a true band of Apache renegades, giving up one of her prized possessions in a contest of wills at the band’s challenge. The loss is somewhat softened by the find if a cache of gold that leaves Claire well-fixed for her future.
The saga winds back to Leadville, Colorado and finally on to Alaska. In 1888, the news follows from Kate of Doc Holliday’s passing in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Kate has been with Doc at the end.
I liked this even more than Retribution but not quite as much as Gunslinger. Claire has developed as a complex character, and I felt this was the most complex of the three novels. I was distinctly disappointed when I learned that this may be the end of the short series. I'm anxious to see if Berkom can stretch to keep Claire alive for us, too!
I received an ARC of ‘Legend’ and voluntarily offer this as an unbiased review of a story that I enjoyed very much.
D.v Berkom has created another kickass female when she switched genres and wrote about Claire Whitcomb. I think D.v has the talent to make an instruction manual interesting and despite westerns not being my preferred type of book, I have loved this trilogy. Claire is a great character but I like strong females that can take care of themselves and handle any situation, Claire can certainly do that, if only the men in her life would allow her. Despite the famous names from history found in this book it felt like an adventure and not a history book and it was only at the end in the authors notes that I discovered so much research went into the writing process, which is how it should be with a great book. With things deteriorating in Tombstone between the law and the cowboys, Claire unable to join her male friends in the hunt for killers takes her own job of escorting a prisoner from jail to the waiting marshals at the train station. Claire has never let being a woman stand in the way of getting the job done and it is not her fault everybody thinks she is a man. Can she convince her he partner of her skills before she is found out? Or before the killers gang catches up with them? A great trilogy of books and one I am sad to see come to an end but it is certainly one I would add to my audio book collection. I was given this free review copy book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I received an advance ARC from the author for my honest review and I also purchased it from amazon.com. Something I like to do, too support one of my favorite authors.
It was the late author Bill Crider, with his 'Outrage at Blanco' novel that made me love revenge stories so much and in away revenge stories for me will always be a tribute to him.
With "Legend", D.V. Berkom continues the Claire Whitcomb story, set in the Wild West, she's heartbroken having lost her family, yet she's tough as nail, just like with her Leine Basso series, she just grabs you the reader, puts you in the pages, has an intertwining storyline, nice to see a series like this in the Western genre based on a strong female character, it's good verse evil and like that she didn't just write a bland tamed down story.
Just meat and potato's, not for the faint of heart, she never writes anything that bogs down or gets slow, best of all are the support characters that make her story better, even with Claire might tell the story and as good as Ace Atkins with doing this.
The best parts are Doc Holliday being a focal point verse Wyatt Earp, the OK Corral gunfight it's like your right in the window watching it with the two ladies, then Harry the Bounty Hunter makes this one better especially with Claire and the differences they need to overcome, like the bend of real history mixed in with fiction, well researched and enjoyed the sort of catfight that Claire and Kate Elder Holliday.
Do hope that this is n't the end. I'm game should the author decide to have Harry and Claire bounty hunting in Alaska, capturing a gang robbing gold from the miner's.
Legend, the concluding third volume of the Claire Whitcomb Westerns series, very neatly wraps up the saga of Claire Whitcomb. It was a little too cinematic for me when compared to her main character line (Leine Basso) but that was, essentially, the point: an (ultimately successful and satisfying) experiment at an out-of-genre novel. I'm not going to go into detail except to say that all's well that end's well could be added to the title with ease.
Writing novels enmeshed in history takes a bit more work - mostly research, as well as envisioning history from a new and untapped perspective - and here is where Berkom shines. Her take on the gunfight at the OK Coral is in line with historical accounts and unique. Kudos to the author!
I know a writer has to sell books to make money to survive, to eat and to keep publishing, and with the lower price of e-books, it's hard to begrudge stretching what could have been one long, satisfying novel over three shorter ones. Especially since they arrived so close to one another.
Here's hoping that things line up for DV Berkom to try her hand at a looong novel one of these days. She has a way with her characters and situations that would serve well as the foundation for it. Perhaps this trilogy could begin a generational novel leading to present time....
This is the 3rd book in a series by D V Berkom. It is the continuation of Claire Whitcomb who becomes a Gunslinger. In Legend she has traveled to Tombstone. While she leaves the company of an actress that she was keeping safe, she meets up with Doc. Holliday. Becoming friends he teaches her more about gun control. She becomes friends with the Earp's. She gets into a fight with Doc's girl friend. Big Nose Kate does not take kindly to her friendship with Doc. When the Clanton's come to town and Kill one of the Earp's, Claire tries to join the posse to bring them in. She ends watching the shoot out between the Earp's and the Clanton's at the OK Corral. She ties up with a bounty hunter to take a prisoner to jail. There are a twists to Claire's story. Must read to find out the rest of the story.
Claire Whitcomb works now riding shotgun for the stage. She is off and another person is on duty and and the people of Tombstone get word that there was a stage robbery attempt and the stage driver and one passenger were killed. So a posse is put together to go after the thieves. There are rumors that several people in Tombstone might have been involved. Also there is discord between the cowboys and some towns people. There is a shoot out at the OK Corral, and one of the Earp boys is killed. So the posse goes out to find the killer and Claire wants to join them but is told NO. She is then offered a job to help transporting a convicted murderer to prison. Harry, the bounty hunter who captured the outlaw, is none too pleased to be sharing the reward. Along the way things don’t go as planned. Lots of action, twist and turns on their trip to get the prisoner to the train station..Alive. Really enjoyed the book and it kept me on edge wanting to know what happens next.
I can’t imagine living in the time that Claire is. She is a woman in a man’s world, doing a man’s job as a hired gun. Because she is a woman, she is perceived to be unfit for certain aspects of the job. For example, she is not permitted to join the posse to hunt down the murderer of her coworker. She does have more freedom than most women of this time. Men have to be tricked into working with her. So she lowers her voice and dresses as a man to be able to help escort a prisoner. And then the fun begins! Good story with some historical characters from the past. I received an advance copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. This is the 3rd western written by D V Berkom and they all contain Claire as a strong female protagonist.
This is the third in the Claire Whitcomb trilogy and it certainly didn’t disappoint. D V Berkom has managed to weave factual historical events into this fictional book and created a truly enjoyable read. It is well researched and even if westerns aren’t your thing, the style of writing, the events that unfold and Claire’s ability to live her own life amongst the prejudices of that time, make this book compelling. I truly hope that there are more books in this series.
Claire Whitcomb is more than a gunslinger. As gunslinger reveals more of Claire's facets, we see her bloom into a strong and independent person. She shows the deadly skills she perfected under Marshall Duggan and Thomas's tutelage, yet she retains the sense of sorrow and regrets the loss of life the harsh West creates. Claire is not skilled in defending herself and others; she shows us her keen perception of her surroundings, her sharp intellect. Claire is smart, strong in spirit and mind, independent, skilled, and feminine. I am looking forward to her next adventure.
Claire wants to go with the posse to find the people who robbed the stage coach. Bur Wyatt Earp will not allow a woman to go along. Claire is asked to accompany a bounty hunter, Harry, to transport a prisoner to Tucson. Harry is not happy to have someone along. Their prisoner has partners who help his escape. Claire and Harry are now tracking them down and they are out numbered.
I am not a western fan, but this book is great and I am happy that I was able to read it. I love the way D. V. Berkom was able to weave history into the book. The book opens with claire stepping out of her room and a woman takes swing at her and misses. The pace of the book does not slow down from there. This is a great read and you will be sorry if you miss it.
LEGEND by D.V. Berkom is the third and last installment in Claire Whitcomb's story set in the Wild West during the 1880s. I have thoroughly enjoyed Claire's adventures.
Claire lost her family, got revenge for them, moved to Tombstone and became close friends with Doc Holiday. Now she is leaving Doc and Tombstone to help an angry bounty hunter deliver a cold blooded murderer to prison. Unfortunately his gang is determined to free their leader. Get ready for some gun fights, survival and life decisions.
This is a fast paced read with excellent characters and an exciting plot. My one complaint, it was over too soon.
I did receive an ARC copy from the author and the above is my freely given review.
What an amazing, strong minded woman Claire is. Mainly because she had to be after the murder of her husband and children in book 1.. But, to be a female Gunslinger it takes a certain kind of woman. So don't get on her bad side. Will she find love again? Can she survive this latest threat? The only way you'll find out is to get this awesome book, written by one of the best female character writers in the business. D V Berkom has written yet another example of a strong, beautiful female character who works harder than any man would, but she allows them to remain feminine and gentle when necessary. A must Read! All three of them....
Really enjoyed the continuation of the Claire Whitcomb adventure in the Arizona Territory in the 1860's. Claire has already taken up temporary residence in Tombstone and, of course, she is interacting with Doc Holliday, the Earps, and all of the well-known bad guys from that era. We even get to be with Claire during the gunfight at the OK Corral. Very exciting with lots of action. Claire continues to grow her character and the reader is absorbed into her life as she interacts with so many familiar situations, places, and people from that time in history. These stories are quick reads and very entertaining. Highly recommend.
I read this book with mixed emotions. I enjoyed this book very much and I am sorry that this series ended. I really enjoyed reading about Claire, she is a wonderful, brave woman. I recommended this series to my husband. I received an ARC of this book and I am happy to write a review.
DV Berkom really does write a good western book. Clair Whitcomb is what the book is based on and I enjoyed it very much. It is a very good plot and I learned a little bit about the Gunfight at the OK corral. Also had information about Wyatt Earp and his family. Good ending too. Reasons I enjoyed this book: Easy-to-read Entertaining Informative Page-turner Realistic Wonderful characters
Claire Whitcomb adventures continue in this third and last book in the series. I liked this story the best of the three. After losing her family, Claire knew she needed to move on. After spending time in Tombstone, she heads back to Colorado, after helping a bounty hunter get a prisoner to where he needed to go. The story wrapped up really well and is a great read.
A fabulous end to a fabulous series. Our girl Claire is back to wrangle you into the rest of her story(so far). The Wild West took so much from her but she’s given it right back. One of the best female characters ever with a story that keeps you flipping pages. An amazing western from her point of view. Loved all three. Kudos to ms Berkom. Another knock out of the park!
This series has been great! Lots of action, wonderful characters, and a great plot. I hope Claire will appear again in another adventure, as I definitely don’t want to say goodbye to her character yet. This is my honest, voluntary review of an advanced reader copy of this book.
Legend us book 3 in the series. DV Berkom writes outstanding books. This western had Claire working as a shotgun on a stage coach for J D Kenner & Co. Claire’s work partner is Harrison and sparks fly! Legend takes us on a wild ride and I loved the ending. I was sad to see the book end. I received an arc for my honest review.
This story runs through some of the history we know, with Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday and the O.K. Corral, but also takes Claire on a new journey of her own, transporting a dangerous prisoner, with a man she's not sure is friend or foe. From here, she then has to decide what she really wants out of life.
While I did like this book, I enjoyed the second half more than the first. To me, in the first part of the book, Claire was really just a bystander to all that was going on, and it wasn't until after the gunfight etc, that her part of the story really started.
I have enjoyed reading this series. An unexpected delight for this "anti-Westerns" reader.
Received as member of ART. Continuing story of Claire Whitcomb's journey in the west. While in Tombstone, she witnesses the gunfight at OK corral. She s then hired by the governor to escort a dangerous criminal to the train in Tuscon. She finds that she has to work with the bounty hunter that originally caught him. Distrust and dislike mar the beginning. As the trip goes on, Claire earns some respect from Harry, the bounty hunter. Very enjoyable read.
Great third book in a great series. Lots of action lots of twists and turns. Claire continues to grow in strength and determination. Another great book from a great author I hope it’s not the last!
Claire was doing bounty hunting and making a name for herself with Doc Holiday and Wyatt Earl. Nice touches of history. it looks like she will happy again.
Considering a switch to western novels was a new direction for this author and I am so glad I came along for the ride! The series was different and yet character traits remarkable similar to Leine and Kate in this author’s two previous series. An excellent read and a really needed break from politics and COVID from 2020. I anxiously await this author’s next book, and highly recommend all of her work!
What a great ending to a great story. This book had a fast pace, just like the others. A lot of action and a happy ending. It was an enjoyment to read about such a strong female character.
Legend (Claire Whitcomb Western, #3), my eighth read from author D.V. Berkom as she delves into the western genre with a kick-ass female main character! Berkom's created a character you want to read more about! (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Another fantastic read in the Claire Whitcomb series. This is the only 19th century western series that I have read and thoroughly enjoyed. Claire is an amazing character, strong and stubborn living very much in a man's world. I love the whole Earp and Holliday aspect, although Claire does very much steal the show. Full of action, adventure and adventure, this is a great series.
