Rate this book
It’s customary in demon summoning to owe a debt in return. But what if you discovered a list of demons that owed your family favours? And worse- they were friends of the family? Reeling after the revelations in her father’s journals, Maddox Black realises that she cannot trust them with anyone. And especially not Wulfrik’s order of Hunters. Burdened with her growing ability to heal and drain life, Maddox’s very existence upsets the balance of nature. Discovering that the Grim intends to use her ability to resurrect the Old King, Maddox and Wulfrik race towards the Bone Isles, a place where the Grim cannot enter. And where she will become a Hunter. But Maddox is having doubts. With the Grim’s war upon the twelve kingdoms now trickling into the Otherworld, Maddox finds herself tempted by the list of demons that owe the Black family favours. Descending into the dark power inside her, she discovers terrible abilities- abilities that could secure herself on Wulfrik’s hunt list. Facing ghosts from Wulfrik’s past, their relationship is tested to breaking point. And as the Grim closes in on Maddox, she and the Hunter are forced to face what truly lies between them. And that may be the biggest danger of them all...

Elizabeth Earle was born in Warwickshire, England and became instantly dissatisfied with reality. Brought up with the profound belief that Narnia was only a wardrobe away, and yes, Legolas would give her a chance if she could only find a dimension into Middle Earth, Elizabeth decided to create worlds of her own. Embittered by Sarah refusing to remain in the Labyrinth, Elizabeth loves nothing more than writing about touch-starved villains and fiery heroines. After spending an unholy amount of money at The Norwich University of the Arts, Elizabeth obtained a BA (Hons) in Creative Writing, mostly thanks to Captain Morgan. Sailor and narrowboater, Elizabeth has spent nearly a decade living on the water- partly for the adventure, and mostly because she’s poor.

During the day, you can find Elizabeth playing with swords at a medieval museum, and by night, tapping away at her laptop whilst cackling, "kiss her already!"

Sadly, I didn't enjoy this book as much as the previous two in the series. I really struggled to finish and mostly persevered with the story because I wanted to know whether the main characters would actually get to their final destination in this third book.

What made reading difficult was the numerous editing issues within the book. Descriptive words that were incorrect, such as 'rivets' instead of 'rivulets'. Some of the grammar wasn't correct, with some sentences not making sense. While I accept and know books can sometimes have these errors, they were so numerous throughout the book that it became an irritant and distracted from the story.

It's a shame because the first two books were well written and enjoyable.

some books with stories in a story you think ... oh get back to the main theme and get on with it ... but with this book you don't want the small stories to end ... oh please, don't reach the Bone Isles yet, there must be another adventure before you get there. It is fascinating to follow the development of Maddox Black. How she discovers what she is capable of. But it is not a super-heroine Hollywood transaction. It comes with all ups and downs and this is what I appreciate about this book, Maddox is real. I would recommend starting with book 1 to follow this journey.
