In this Audio Bible Study, leading New Testament scholars, N.T. Wright and Michael Bird, hope to take you on a tour of the New Testament Story. They will look at who Jesus is, the real meaning of his death and resurrection, and examine the debates and setbacks that they had along the way.
This is a good, fairly short Bible study about the Jewish world/culture that existed at the time Christ was born, how the message of the gospel tied into the Jewish religion, how the apostle Paul took the message into the Greco-Roman world (with background details about the Greco-Roman culture of the time), some historical data about the early Church, and ends with how the New Testament ended up in the book form as we know it today. It is a fast-paced audiobook with a lot of historical information for the person wanting to know more about where Christianity came from and what the world was like at the time. Both N.T. Wright and Michael Bird are very knowledgeable about this subject, both with a very clear and engaging teaching style.
“As Paul says at the end of 1 Corinthians 15, what you do in the present, in the power of the spirit is not wasted; that is part of the truth of resurrection: that everything we do in the name of Jesus, in the power of the spirit, - all works of justice and mercy, all works of beauty and delight- these will somehow be taken up and transformed in the new world that God will one day make.” Delightful easy listen with short, on-location lessons about the New Testament in its context, covering ancient religiosity, the early church’s relationship to synagogue, how the canon was compiled, and more.
Another Audible sale item I bought and took a while to listen to. While I enjoyed the summary content from Wright and Bird about various books and issues in the New Testament, this was not really a sustained book with a thesis. I have no idea why they put "You Never Knew" in the title, since their survey seemed very mainstream, and so this was, in fact, the New Testament I knew. It turns out this was the audio portion of a DVD curriculum they did to support their textbook on the NT. All that to say, I can't think of a good reason to buy this, but the content is solid if you do.
