*Catawampus (adj.): 1.) Fierce, savage 2.) Askew, awry
It’s a cold and snowy Christmas Eve in the rowdy mining town of Deadwood in the Dakota Territory. Rather than enjoy some drinks in front of a warm fire with her friends, contracted Slayer Clementine Johanssen has her horse saddled and weapons packed to head out into the hills and hunt down some deadly scallywags—alone. When her friends catch wind of her intentions, they set out to waylay her long enough to change her way of thinking … in spite of her mule-headedness.
Reminiscent of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, this catawampus tale will add a heartening dose of fun and camaraderie to your holiday!
Note: This is book 3.5 of the Deadwood Undertaker Series

Are you like me and like things that are a bit unusual? A little off the wall? Well, I've got the perfect Christmas story for you!
Catawampus Christmas Carol is not your ordinary holiday read but it was such a fun treat. Reading a book set in the old west of Deadwood and centering around an executioner sounds like the perfect way to spend the days before Christmas, don't you think? It really is a fun, feel-good story that will have you laughing out loud at the character's shenanigan's.
I love Ann Charles and her Deadwood mystery series! And I love these new wacky characters that she and Sam Lucky have introduced us to in this Undertaker series. Each book just gets better and better.
And I'll leave you with one last, very important word - Prudence! 😉 💕
This wasn’t one of Ann and Sams’ usual kill’emalls that I usually associate with Violet’s ancestress of choice, but I got a lot of insight on her companions- a step above “friends”. I think that Ann may be in love with Boon, I know that Sam is in love with Clem. Waiting to see what happens in Slagton.
Really didn't like this at first, then I realized I had started a book in the middle of a series. I didn't know the characters and it was written like I should know them and what had went on. I finished the book and started thinking okay after half way through (it's a novella, only a little over 5 hours on audio) I wouldn't recommend it if you haven't read the series, and I'm not sure I'll be reading any more of these. I think it might be considered fantasy because they kept mentioning things (don't know what they were) and there is a ghost - but hey it's a Christmas Carol.
A Little Bit of Christmas amongst a Whole Lotta Slayin’
My timing was perfect! I read this directly after finishing book 3, “Long Way from Ordinary”, during Christmas time. However, this is a perfect segue to the next book in the Undertaker series. It really further develops the characters while keeping with the witty theme and banter as Ann and Sam always do. I believe it’s ol’ Hank who’s stolen my heart.
Fantastic story. It was great fun to read and too short. It did delve into areas of each characters life and personality explaining a lot of things about them. Lots of fun . Really enjoyed learning about the people more. Can hardly wait for next book. It does mean I can never die cause I have to see what will be coming. Thanks Ann and Sam
A quick and enjoyable read for anyone who is a fan of Ann Charles & Sam Lucky's Undertaker Series. This novella provides some background information into the characters and reminds us all of the importance of the Christmas season of giving. A heartwarming short story, guaranteed to make you appreciate the little things in life.
I so enjoyed this Christmas story for the Undertaker series. You get to know a little more about the main characters of the story and understand them each a little better. It also is a touching story of the true meaning of the Christmas spirit. I, of course, was ready for more and cannot wait for the next book. I cannot recommend this series enough - love Ann Charles and Sam Lucky’s writing!
What a wonderful spirit filled story. With love in friendship and humanity to to Your fellow man. What better way to aboa it than how it was done here in this book. You'll not regret reading it at all. It may not have any monsters this time well maybe one, but it's still a wonderful read.
I have yet to read an Ann Charles book that wasn't creatively ingenious, interesting and absolute fun. She is one of my favorite authors. This book is just as interesting as all the others. I am just sad that the time between books is so long as I am always ready for the next book immediately after finishing the recent release.
Ann Charles and Sam Lucky take you back in time. Their descriptive style of writing actually make you feel like you are there, sometimes right down to the smells...lol.
Catawampus Christmas Carol is exactly the story we needed at the end of 2020. Along with Clementine, we can take time to appreciate our friends and family, and the joys of giving. Scrooged is one of my favourite tellings of the classic tale as well! Thank you Ann and Sam, for this new version.
What a wonderful glimpse into Deadwood during the gold rush days as seen through the eyes of Ann Charles and Sam Lucky. Clementine, Hank, Boone, Jack and others are Celebrating Christmas as best they can and we learn more about these wonderful characters.
Wonderful take on Dickens "A Christmas Carol". A very pleasant way to end a difficult year. I wish it could have been longer to extend the pleasure but the story was perfect as is. I feel like I was given a very special Christmas gift. Thank you so much, Ann and Sam. Happy Christmas to you, too!
The sidewiders and Form are getting ready to go fight the monsters in Slagton but Christmas interferes and the group end up.having a Dead wood Christmas with good food, drink, and good friends
This is my favorite in the series so far. It is character driven. No monsters unless you count Masterson. I enjoyed learning more about each of our main characters. It makes them more relatable.
This was such a fun addition to the series, I absolutely loved diving deeper into these wonderful quirky characters and learning more about their past. This was perfect for the Christmas season.
This Christmas just got a little more exciting & dangerous- & I'm not talking about discussing politics or religion at the family dinner table!
Join the Santa Fe Sidewinders, Rabbit & Boone, & Hank, & Clem on another supernatural adventure to save the West one monster kill at a time!
The Deadwood Undertaker books always deliver laughs, chills, and "the feels", all in an addictive series that you never want to end! Set in the historic western town of Deadwood, South Dakota, these books are part comedy, mystery, & thriller with supernatural & paranormal fights to the death...& just a touch of romance. This series is a romping good time!
Clementines is a Slayer hired to clean up the mining town of Deadwood, South Dakota. She signed up for more than she bargained for but she's found help in her friends. As she trains them to get ready to face the next deadly paranormal foe, she wonders if she is signing their death warrants. These friends and allies won't give her much choice though, since they have committed themselves to be her posse.
The monsters are real & the stakes couldn't be higher. They ban together to protect the innocent (& not so innocent) citizens of Deadwood & other mining camps nearby. All while bonding & learning more about themselves, each other, & this crazy supernatural world they've been thrust into. They bear it all with humor, bravery, caring, & a little bit of crazy! I highly recommend these books by husband & wife team, Ann Charles & Sam Lucky.
