Collinswood Colorado is at war! It's not a war that the vanilla populace knows about, but it's a dangerous time to be a supernatural creature. A powerful, criminal organization from the coast is trying to take over from the old guard. And somehow Walter finds himself in the middle again. When one of the girls from the rathouse tells him that he's the only one who can help her, Walter's first instinct is to mind his own damned business. But Walter is a father, now, with new responsibilities and new expenses, and he's not going to be able to do that without either making some friends, or making some money. But in taking on the position of bodyguard, Walter quickly finds that he's jumped into dangerous waters. Getting to safety might require him to do the most dangerous and stupid thing that he's ever done. Seek help from Percy.
Leod has lived in the United States his whole life, moving about the country irregularly. He has few skills outside of writing, and most of his interests involve sitting in front of his computer for hours on end. For this reason he is often mistaken for a plant, or even more often, as some form of mildew.
Walter has a lot of very normal problems. He has trouble keeping his business afloat and especially keeping his scheming employee from roping him into a scheme. He's a new father so he's trying to do some home improvements to make room for his twin sons. And then an acquaintance wants to hire Walter to keep her stalker ex-girlfriend away from her possibly in exchange for getting his boys into an exclusive pre-school. Pretty standard really.
Except Walter is a ghoul which is a supernatural carrion eater. His business is a funeral home that operates as a front to dispose of bodies in the secret war between vampires and werewolves in town. His twin boys are also ghouls which means the home improvements are designed to keep them from chewing through the walls and devouring the neighbors. And the acquaintance is a siren -- the lure sailors to their death variety -- that works as a prostitute at a supernatural brothel and her ex is a psycho, but also part of a supernatural mafia that wants to take over the town. And don't get me started on his employee Percy.
Always a good read. If you enjoy The Dresden Files this will be a different angle, but an enjoyable one.
Delectable Detritus was another fine addition in Leod Fitz's Corpse Eater Saga. It had the same quirky goofy charm as its prior installments.
In this book we get a little more insight into the circumstances and factions that make up this story world, as well as a very easy-to-dislike villain.
For me, while enjoyable, this particular volume was ultimately a mixed bag. At some points the writing was very strong, and hyper engaging (looking at you underwater-vault-scene). At other times, it was a tiny bit difficult to keep track of it all (redcap action sequences. There were just sooo many people in one scene).
However, all in all I was won over by the reoccurring characters like Walter and Tricia, as well as interesting new additions to the cast like Chicago.
I really like this series. The main character is a supernatural entity that I have yet to run across in any other series, and there are lots of twists and turns to keep things interesting.
The thing that bugs me to distraction is that the author desperately needs a copyeditor. There are so many instances of poor spelling, such as using the incorrect form of their/there/they're, or two different spellings for the same word ON THE SAME DANG PAGE, it's just seriously annoying. Please, M. Fitz, GET A GOOD COPYEDITOR!!! Your readers will thank you.
Still fun, but seems like the series is losing its way. Main character didn't eat a single rotten body, gross-out factor largely absent (typical in-fight violence doesn't really count). Says he prefers being alone but spends the whole book willingly seeking others out. Suddenly becomes important in a gang war, pulls fatherly instincts out of nowhere, etc. It comes across more like a standard supernatural private investigator story with some convenient powers rather than a convincing non-human protagonist.
The fights, gang war, and family member interactions were fun nonetheless.
Glorious, and as I said on reddit, my money has been throw to buy this saga!
Loved every step and enjoyed the fuck out of every moment. Hell got my wife to read it, both of us enjoy the whole thing! Hope for more of Walter or anything of the like. Full stars!
This is book 4 and the last in the series. All of the major players are fine. The war is over. Curtis isn’t going to be a problem as long as he keeps his mouth shut. Walter is better off than when the series started .
