ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಪೂರ್ತಿ ಮುಗಿಸುವ ಹೊತ್ತಿಗೆ ವೀರಪ್ಪನ್ ಒಬ್ಬ ಅಮಾಯಕನೋ ಅನ್ನುವ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಕಾಡಲು ಶುರು ಮಾಡಿತು. ಅದೇನೇ ಇರಲಿ ಅದನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ಬದಿಗಿಟ್ಟು ಕೃಪಾಕರ ಮತ್ತು ಸೇನಾನಿ ಅವರು, ಅವನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಮಮತೆ, ಕಾಡಿನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಇರುವ ತಿಳುವಳಿಕೆ, ಮತ್ತು ಕಾಡಿನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಇನ್ನಸ್ಟು ವಿಷಯ ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು ಎನ್ನುವ ಹುಮ್ಮಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಬಹಳ ಚೆಂದವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ವೀರಪ್ಪನ್ ಅಂದ್ರೆ ಕ್ರೂರಿ, ಕಟಕ ಈ ತರಹದ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳೇ ನಮ್ಮ ಮನದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದ್ದಿದ್ದು ನಿಜ, ಆದರೆ ಅವನು ಒಬ್ಬ ಮನುಜ ಅನ್ನೋದು ಸುಳ್ಳಲ್ಲ, ಅವನಲ್ಲು ಒಳ್ಳೆತನ ಅನ್ನೋದು ಇದ್ದಿತು ಅನ್ನೋದನ್ನ ಕತೆ ತೋರಿಸಿ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಮೊದಲಿನಿಂದ ಕೊನೆಯವರೆಗೂ ಎಸ್ಟೊಂದು ಕಡೆ ಹಾಸ್ಯಮಯವಾಗಿಯೇ ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುವ ಬರಹಗಾರರ ಕೈಚಳಕವು ಅದ್ಬುತ.

ವೀರಪ್ಪನ್ ಅಂದ ತಕ್ಷಣ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂಡುವುದು ದಪ್ಪ ಮೀಸೆ, ಒಣಕಲು ಶರೀರ, ದಂತ ಚೋರ, ಕಾಡುಗಳ್ಳ ಎಂಬ ಅನ್ವರ್ಥನಾಮಗಳು. ಅವನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಕೇಳಿರುವ, ನೋಡಿರುವ, ಓದಿರುವ ಅನೇಕ ವಿಷಯಗಳು ಋಣಾತ್ಮಕ ವಿಷಯಗಳೇ. ಅವನ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಮುಖವನ್ನು ತೆರೆದಿಡುತ್ತದೆ ಈ ಕೃತಿ.

ಹಾಗಂತ ಅವನು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯವನು ಅಥವಾ ಕೆಟ್ಟವನು ಎಂದು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಶ್ಲೇಷಿಸಿಲ್ಲ. ಕಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಳೆದ 14 ದಿನಗಳ ಪ್ರವಾಸದ ಕಥೆಯಂತೆ ಈ ಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ರಚಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಲೇಖಕರು.

ವೀರಪ್ಪನ್ ಮತ್ತು ಅವನ ಸಂಗಡಿಗರ ಒಡನಾಟ, ಅವರೆಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಇರುವ ಕಾಡಿನ ಬಗೆಗಿನ ಅಗಾಧ ಜ್ಞಾನ, ಭಾವುಕತೆ, ಪ್ರಾಣಿ ಪಕ್ಷಿಗಳ ಅನುಕರಣೆ, ದೈವ ಭಕ್ತಿ, ಹೊರ ಜಗತ್ತಿನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅವರಿಗಿರುವ ಅಜ್ಞಾನ. ಹೀಗೆ ಹಲವು ವಿಷಯಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಬೆಳಕು ಚೆಲ್ಲುತ್ತದೆ ಈ ಕೃತಿ.

ಇನ್ನೂ ವೀರಪ್ಪನ್ನೊಳಗೊಬ್ಬ ಇರುವ ಹೋರಾಟಗಾರ, ಪರಿಸರ ತಜ್ಞ, ಕಲಾವಿದ, ಕ್ರಾಂತಿಕಾರಿ, ವಿದೂಷಕ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಕೂಡ ಪರಿಚಯಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

ಲೇಖಕರುಗಳಾದ ಕೃಪಾಕರ್-ಸೇನಾನಿಯವರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ಹೇಳಿದರು ಕಮ್ಮಿಯೇ. ಅವರ 'ಕೆನ್ನಾಯಿಯ ಜಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ' ಪುಸ್ತಕ, ಕೆ ಪುಟ್ಟಸ್ವಾಮಿಯವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಹೊರತಂದ 'ಜೀವಜಾಲ' ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಜೀವ ಜಗತ್ತಿನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕೆಂಬುವವರ ಕಾಪಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕಾದ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು.

ಇಂತಹ ಘನ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವದ ಇವರಿಬ್ಬರು ಅಂತಹ ವೀರಪ್ಪನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಬಹಳ ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಂದ ಪರಿಚಯ ಇರುವವರಂತೆ ಅವನೊಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಬಹಳ ಸಹಜವಾಗಿ ವರ್ತಿಸುತ್ತಾ, ಒಂದು ಹಂತದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವನನ್ನು ತಪ್ಪು ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೊಂಡು ಶರಣಾಗುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಒಪ್ಪಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ ಕೂಡ.
ಇವರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಅಪಹರಣಕ್ಕೊಳಗಾದ ಡಾಕ್ಟರ್ ಮೈಥಿ ಮತ್ತು ಇನ್ನಿತರರನ್ನು ಸಮರ್ಥವಾಗಿ, ಮಾನಸಿಕ ಸ್ಥಿಮಿತವನ್ನು ಕಳೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳದಂತೆ ಜೊತೆಗಿರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಈ ಕೃತಿಯ ವಿಶೇಷತೆ ಎಂದರೆ ಓದುತ್ತಾ ಹೋದಂತೆ ಎಲ್ಲೂ ಗೋಳಿನ ಕಥೆ ಅನಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಗೆಳೆಯರೆಲ್ಲರೂ ಸೇರಿ ಯಾವುದೋ ಚಾರಣಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಹೋಗಿ ಬಂದಂತೆ ಅನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಕಾರಣ ಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಹಾಸ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರೂಪಿಸಿರುವುದು.

ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ನಾಲ್ಕು ದಿನ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಗೆ ವೀರಪ್ಪನ್ ಇವರನ್ನು ಇರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬಾರದಿತ್ತೆ ಎಂಬ ತಣ್ಣನೆಯ ಕ್ರೂರ ಚಿಂತನೆ ಕೂಡ ಮಿಂಚಿ ಮಾಯವಾಯ್ತು.
ಇನ್ನೂ ವೀರಪ್ಪನ ಹಾಗೂ ತಂಡದವರ ವಿವಿಧ ಮುಖಗಳು ಟ್ಯಾಲೆಂಟ್ ಗಳು ಪರಿಚಿತವಾಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದುವೇನೊ. ಅಷ್ಟೊಂದು ಸೊಗಸಾಗಿ ಕೃಪ ಹಾಗೂ ಸೇನಾನಿ ಆ ಅನುಭವಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ದಾಖಲಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಕೊನೆಯ ಸಾಲು "ಅವನನ್ನು ಮುಗಸ್ ಬೇಕು...ಅದರಲ್ಲೇನು ಅನುಮಾನವೇ ಬೇಡ. ಆದರೆ...ಅವನ ಪ್ರತಿಭೆಯನ್ನು ಹೇಗಾದರೂ ಮಾಡಿ ಉಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕಲ್ಲ" ಎಂದು ಮುಕ್ತಾಯವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
ಇದೇ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಬಹುತೇಕ ಓದಿದವರೆಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಬಂದರೆ ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ.

ವೀರಪ್ಪನ್ - ನಮ್ಮ ಬಾಲ್ಯದ ಕೌತುಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು (might sound oxymoron), ಮೈಸೂರಿನವರಾದ ನಮಗೆ 'ಆಂದೋಲನ' ದಿನಪತ್ರಿಕೆಯ ವರಸೆಯಿಂದ ವೀರಪ್ಪನ್ ಬಗ್ಗೆಗಿನ ರೋಚಕ ಸುದ್ದಿಗಳನ್ನು ಓದುವುದು ಬಾಲ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಡಿಕೆಯಾಗಿತ್ತು. ವೀರಪ್ಪನ್ ನಡೆಸಿದ ಅನೇಕ ಕೃತ್ಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಡಾ.ರಾಜ್ ಮತ್ತು ಕೃಪಾಕರ್-ಸೇನಾನಿಯವರ ಅಪಹರಣ ಅವನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಕ್ರೋಧ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಸಿದರೂ ಅವನ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಮುಖವನ್ನು ಅನಾವರಣಗೊಳಿಸಿತು ಎನ್ನಬಹುದು.

14 ದಿನಗಳ ತಮ್ಮ ಅಪಹರಣದ ಪ್ರಹಸನವನ್ನು ರೋಚಕವಾಗಿ ಕೃಪಾಕರ್-ಸೇನಾನಿಯವರು ಹಾಸ್ಯದ ಎಳೆಯಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ವೀರಪ್ಪನಿಗೆ ಕಾಡಿನ ಜೊತೆ ಇದ್ದ ಸಂವೇದನೆ, ಕ್ಷಮಾದಾನ ಪಡೆದು ನಾಡಿಗೆ ಮರಳುವ ತುಡಿತ, ಅವನ ತಂಡದ ಸದಸ್ಯರ ಆಟೋಟಪಗಳು, ಅವನನ್ನು ನಾಡಿಗೆ ಹಿಂದಿರುಗಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳದ ನಮ್ಮ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ, ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಕಾಡು-ಪ್ರಾಣಿ-ಪಕ್ಷಿಗಳ ಜಗತ್ತನ್ನು ಈ ಹೊತ್ತಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಕೃಪಾಕರ ಮತ್ತು ಸೇನಾನಿಯವರ ಬಹಳ ಲಘು, ಹಾಸ್ಯಾಸ್ಪದದ, sarcastic memoir ಓದಲು ಬಹಳ ಹಿತ. ತಮಗೆ ಆಗಿರುವ ಈ ಅನಿರೀಕ್ಷಿತ ಹಾಗೂ ಕಷ್ಟದ ಘಟನೆಯನ್ನು ಕೃಪಾಕರರು ಬರೆದ ರೀತಿ, ಸೇನಾನಿಯವರು ವೀರಪ್ಪನ್ ಜತೆ ನಡೆದುಕೊಂಡ ರೀತಿ ಅವರ ಸ್ವಭಾವವನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತೆ.

ವೀರಪ್ಪನ್ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಚಿಕ್ಕಂದಿನಿಂದಲೂ ಕೇಳುತ್ತಲೇ ಬೇಳೆದಿದ್ದಿನಿ. ಆದ್ರೆ ಇತ್ತೀಚಿಗೆ ಬಂದ "The Hunt for Veerappan" ಎಂಬ show ನೋಡಿ, ಅವನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ಕುತೂಹಲ ಮೂಡಿತು. ಕೃಪಾಕರ ಸೇನಾನಿಯವರ ಬರಹಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ಇತರ ಕೆಲಸಗಳನ್ನು ಓದಿದ್ದೆ, ನೋಡಿದ್ದೆ, ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಕೂಡ ತುಂಬಾ ಹಿಂದೆ ಖರೀದಿಸಿದ್ದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಈಗ ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿ ವೀರಪ್ಪನ್ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲ, ನಮ್ಮ ಸರ್ಕಾರ, ಪೊಲೀಸ್ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ, ಪತ್ರಿಕೋದ್ಯಮ ಇವೇಲ್ಲರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನನಗಿದ್ದ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಗಳನ್ನು ಮರು ಪರಿಶೀಲನೆ ಮಾಡಬೇಕು ಎಂದೆನಿಸದೆ.

ಕೃಪಾಕರರು ತಮ್ಮ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಈ ವಾಕ್ಯದಿಂದ ಮುಕ್ತಾಯ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ನಮ್ಮ ಈಗಿನ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಈ ವಾಕ್ಯದ ಮೂಲಕವಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲದೆ, ಇಡೀ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿ, ಕೃಪಾಕರರು ತುಂಬಾ ಆಳವಾದ ಜ್ಞಾನವನ್ನೂ ಹಾಗೂ ಟೀಕೆಯನ್ನೂ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಹೆಸರೇ ಹೇಳುವಂತೆ, ಇದು ಕೃಪಾಕರ್ ಮತ್ತು ಸೇನಾನಿ ವೀರಪ್ಪನ ಸರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿ ಬಿದ್ದು ೧೪ ದಿನಗಳನ್ನು ಕಳೆದ ಕಥೆ. ಬಂಡೀಪುರದ ಕಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ವೀರಪ್ಪನ್ ಮತ್ತು ಆತನ ಸಂಗಡಿಗರ ಜೊತೆ ಎರಡು ವಾರಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಇದ್ದು ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ದಿನಚರಿಯನ್ನು ನಿಷ್ಪಕ್ಷಪಾತವಾಗಿ ದಾಖಲಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅವರುಗಳು ದಿನನಿತ್ಯ ಆ ಕಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಏನು ತಿನ್ನುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು, ರಾತ್ರಿ ಹೇಗೆ ಮಲಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು, ಸ್ನಾನ ಇತ್ಯಾದಿಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಯಥಾವತ್ತಾಗಿ, ನಮ್ಮ ಕಣ್ಣಮುಂದೆಯೇ ಚಿತ್ರ ಮೂಡುವಂತೆ ವಿವರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಆ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ವರದಿಯಾದಂತಹ ದಿನಪತ್ರಿಕೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿನ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ಎಷ್ಟು ಪೊಳ್ಳು ಎಂಬುದು ಗೊತ್ತಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

Got this book in this hand yesterday, and finished it by midnight. This is a very honest recounting of the incidents in captivity of Veerappan by wildlife filmmakers Senani and Krupakar ( makers of wild dog diaries and the pack ).

It starts of hilariously as it runs through the confusion of Veerappan and his gang who had taken Senani and Krupakar to be highly paid government officials. He is unable to pronounce their names right, nevertheless he wants a few crores to be paid out as ransom by the governments.

In a case of Stockholm syndrome, Krupakar and Senani end up sympathizing with Veerappan and gang, and they are in awe at the capabilities of this jungle bandit, as a tracker, mimic of the wildlife sounds and as an athlete. The gang of bandits too takes in to the hostages , spending hours conversing about the forest, wild animals and about policemen.

In the narration of a kidnapping that never feels like an ordeal, Krupakar and Senani's notes form a story that shifts between gripping, hilarious and profound.

ಪುಸ್ತಕವು ವೀರಪ್ಪನ್ ಒಳ ವಿಚಾರ ಮತ್ತು ಅವನ ಭಾವನೆಗಳ ಆಗು ಹೋಗುಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಬಹಳ ಒತ್ತು ನೀಡಿದೆ. ಅಂತಾರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಖ್ಯಾತಿಗೆ ಬಂದಿದ್ದ ಕೃಪಾಕರ ಮತ್ತು ಸೇನಾನಿ ಅವರನ್ನು kidnap ಮಾಡಿ ಅವರಿಂದ ಕಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಏನಾದರೂ ಸಹಾಯ ಸಿಗಬಹುದು ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಅದರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಇವರನ್ನು ಅಪಹರಣ ಮಾಡಿ ಸರ್ಕಾರದಿಂದ ಹಣವನ್ನು ಕಬಳಿಸಬಹುದು ಎನ್ನುವ ಯೋಜನೆಯನ್ನಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ವೀರಪ್ಪನ್ ಇವರಿಬ್ಬರನ್ನು kidnap ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಕೃಪಾಕರ ಸೇನಾನಿ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಸರ್ಕಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿಯ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಹುದ್ದೆಯಲ್ಲಿರಬಹುದು ಅಂತ ಊಹಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದು ನಂತರ ಅವರ ಪ್ರಾಮುಖ್ಯತೆಯನ್ನು ಬಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬಹುದೆಂದು ಉಪಾಯ ಹೂಡಿದರೆ ಅವರಿಂದ ಯಾವುದೇ ಸಹಾಯ ಸಿಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಅದರ ಬದಲು ಕೃಪಾಕರ ಸೇನಾನಿಯರಿಗೆ ವೀರಪ್ಪನ್ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಮುಖದರ್ಶನ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಎಷ್ಟೋ ಇಲ್ಲದ ಆಪಾದನೆಯನ್ನು ತಲೆ ಮೇಲೆ ಹೊರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಕಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ತಿರುಗುತ್ತಿರುವ ಈ ನರಭಕ್ಷಕನಿಗೂ ಒಂದು ಹೃದಯವಿದೆ, ಭಾವನೆಗಳಿವೆ ಅಂತ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಿದಾಗ ನಮಗೂ ಅನಿಸುವುದುಂಟು. ಕೆಲವು ದಿನಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ Godfather ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಮತ್ತೊಮ್ಮೆ ಓದಿದಾಗ Godfatherನ ಆದರ್ಶಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಜೀವನಶೈಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ವೀರಪ್ಪನ್ ಜೀವನಶೈಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯತೆಗಳು ಕಂಡುಬಂದವು.
ತನ್ನಿಂದ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಅಮಾಯಕರು ಕಷ್ಟಪಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರಲ್ಲ ಅಂತ ವೀರಪ್ಪನ್ ಗೆ ಅನ್ನಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೂ ಅವನು ಈ ಸಂಧರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಸಹಾಯಕ. ಕಾರಣ ತನ್ನ ಬೆನ್ನಗಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂತವರಿಗೆ ಅಣ್ಣ ಹಾಕುವುದು ಅವನ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯ. ಎಷ್ಟು ಈ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಇಂಡೋ ನಾಳೆಯೋ ತಮಗೆ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ ಸಿಗುತ್ತೇನೋ ಅಂತ ಕಾಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೆ ಆ ದಿನಗಳು ಕ್ರಮೇಣ ಮುಂದೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದವು. ಇದೇ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಬ್ಬರೂ ಸೇರಿ ಆದಷ್ಟು ಕಷ್ಟಪಟ್ಟು ವೀರಪ್ಪನನ್ನು ಶರಣಾಗತನಾಗಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಪಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಯಾಕೆಂದರೆ ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಥವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ, ವೀರಪ್ಪನು ಒಬ್ಬ ಹೃದಯವಂತನೆಂದು. ಇನ್ನೇನು ಅವನು ಶರಣಾಗಬೇಕು ಅಂತ ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಿದಾಗ ಅವನನ್ನು ಹೊಡೆದುರುಳಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇನ್ನುಕೃಪಾಕರ ಸೇನಾನಿ ಇಬ್ಬರೂ ಆ most wanted ವೀರಪ್ಪನ್ ಹದಿನಾಲ್ಕು ದಿನಗಳ ಬಂಧನದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದು ಜೀವಸಹಿತವಾಗಿ ಹಿಂತಿರುಗಿದ್ದು ಒಂದು ಚಮತ್ಕಾರವಾದಂತಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಲೆಕ್ಕವಿಲ್ಲದಷ್ಟು ಊಹಾಪೋಹಗಳಿಗೆ ದಾರಿದೀಪವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಹಿಂದೆ ಹೇಳಿದಂತೆ ವೀರಪ್ಪನ್ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯವನೂ ಕೆಟ್ಟವನೋ ಎನ್ನುವುದು ತಾತ್ವಿಕ ವಿವೇಚನೆ, ಅದನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟರೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ವರ್ತಮಾನವನ್ನು ದಾಖಲಿಸುವ ರೀತಿ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ರೂಪಗೊಂಡಿದೆ.

This is an excellent piece of writing. This is co-authored by two gentlemen who were captured by Veerappan. This book shows various facets of the infamous and ruthless Veerappan. Full of entertaining anecdotes, this is a very breezy read. Also, it gives the reader a glimpse into the mind of a guerilla vigilante.

The book gives a good insight into the personal interaction with Veerappan. But the authors have grossly exaggerated their authority in that situation, which Veerappan would allow no one to dictate terms to him. So many things feel like straight blatant lies. You would have to just imagine the fearful lot under Veerappan and then get the context of what they say. The authors try to project themselves as heroes and brave men, neither of which they are not, and that can be seen in the book that they are blatantly lying about the control they had on their hostage situation. Should have written facts rather than projecting yourself more than what you actually were. Slightly disappointed.

The book is about how wildlife photographers Krupakar and Senani kidnapped by Veerappan spend 14 days with him in the forests of Bandipur. Along with the two photographers, there were four others who were kidnapped, but it was Krupakar and Senani who handle the kidnap situation with their intelligence, humour and presence of mind.

Although their kidnap is a serious situation, the narration is humorous and gives a close view of Veerappan, his aides and their nature. It also shows Veerappan’s other qualities apart from cruelty.

Finally, reading from the original kannada version would be more appealing.

Omen (my friend & fellow foodie) said he was buying this book. That's how I got to know about and decided to buy this book. 'Birds, Beasts and Bandits' follows the experiences of two wildlife conservationists and filmmakers who were kidnapped by the notorious bandit Veerappan for a period of 14 days, from Bandipur forest region.

More than the terror or horror of kidnapping, what you feel is a little smile and amusement that grows on you while reading. The society and the government calls Veerappan a bandit, an outlaw, a cruel, heartless person; while it is true that he's done some really bad crimes, but there is sure another side to the coin, there are things that the authorities and the media have not told us, or have lied to us about. While reading the way which Krupakar & Senani with Veerappan, I felt they were more deceit-minded than the bandit. Veerappan does bad things, but he is straight-forward in his actions, a son of the jungle he is. Reading about the jungle experiences, the birds, animals etc., made me want to travel somewhere soon, at least to the trekking routes of Munnar. I shall, soon enough.

Nice book.
The authors spent 14 days in the forest in the captivity of India’s most wanted forest brigand Koose Munisamy Veerappan. Veerappan thought them to be high ranking govt employees which may be useful in extorting huge sums of money. But later he realised otherwise and let them free though terms which authors have not written.
The book helps us to understand different aspects of personality of K M Veerappan. They describe forest and wildlife in interesting ways. The authors are spell bound by the intimate knowledge of the forest, wildlife , routes and of entire Forest ecosystem. They are privileged to discuss many topics with him. He claims that all crimes in the forest are attributed to him despite other many criminal gangs doing the same. Authors are amazed by the ability of Veerappan to produce and imitate different calls of animals.
The authors convince him not to abduct foreign tourists as it would turn against him. Similarly they request him not to kill wild elephants. Contrary Veerappan said that more than him other poachers and criminal gangs have killed more elephants than him. Obviously he tells them about the human rights excesses committed by police and justified their brutal killings. They were also able to see funny side of Veerappan.

I read this book before 6 years when I was 18. but now when I read it the book is amazing and inspiring to know that it does not matter who the person is but they have lots of knowledge that we are not aware of. Book is inspiring about how Krupakar and Senani hold their ground even if they are facing a dacoit who is feared by the south India (If the narrative of them is true!). I loved the intricacies of the details they have told about the forest animals and birds. It also shows the bad side of the government who does anything to keep their hands clean by blaming those who are against them. This also shows the power of media and how their narrative is changed according to their will.
It's a pity that the two major television news channels in Tamil nadu is controlled by two major parties which is the ruling party and the opposition party whoever comes to the power they have the narrative over the news as they wish.
This is the most interesting Non-fiction I have read until now.

I am pretty sure the authors had a stockholm syndrome or else he could not have pulled this novel so beautifully. I had a smile pasted on my face as this books brings out the other facet which infact the true nature of veerappan. The core plot itself enlightening where a forest bandit with immense knowledge about nature and forest kidnaps a professional wildlife and nature enthusiasts, after all what can you expect other than the conversation regarding their common interests, delight it was.

There are certain instances which shows sheer brilliance of veerappan, where he is making sound of monkeys,hunting it, explaining the nature of plants trees like a botanist,escaping from leopards,his live theatrical performance like animals etc you would compel yourself to arrive at a point that he is the King of jungle, such was his understanding towards the language of forest. Enjoyable.

Written in a simple format, this tale, which is a true story, recounts an incredulous two weeks spent in the jungle by two famous wildlife filmmakers as hostages to a seemingly wonderful host, who was believed to be the most notorious forest brigand, with a intimidating moustache, which became sort of an icon.
The book makes the reader aware of comparative reasoning to one sided argument and knowledge, which in this case is presented as the author's brief insight into a rare and compassionate side of an infamous criminal, known for his elusiveness and feared for his ruthlessness.

Spending 14 days with an evil and live to tell about the experience in itself is a brave story.
I liked that the book narrated certain facts about Veerappan that no media or news ever captured like Veerappan loved to dance, that's true he loved to dance and Veerappan believed that you don't need to go to a temple to pray, God is everywhere and one just needs to close his eyes and worship from his heart.

Veerappan was a Forest brigand and it took the governments of 2 states nearly twenty years to snare him. His fearsome reputation made his capture all the more imminent. He was a sandal wood smuggler, an elephant poacher and killer of more than 200 people. This is the picture of Veerappan one gets from the book - Veerappan, Chasing the Brigand by K. Vijay Kumar, the Director General of Police. A reference to this book, roused my curiosity.

The two wildlife photographers, authors of the book, Birds, Bees and Bandits, were taken captive by Veerappan. Fortunately, they lived to tell the world another story. The Veerappan they encountered, was very human, he was sensitive and excitable, affectionate and affable. He was knowledgeable and intelligent.

He could unveil the mysteries of the forest like an explorer. He had the sensitive grasp of a great writer. He could mimic c the wild animals flawlessly, with sound effects. Veerappan was a mesmerising performer. It was difficult to believe that he was a heartless killer.

It is hard to over state how infamous Veerappan was in my childhood. I remember hearing about him on the news and I remember hearing about his death as well. This entire book feels surreal. I was laughing out loud while reading it and at the same time thinking about the persona that the governments and media create around the outlaw.

This book was so hilarious and funny and charming and kind of cute. Can't fathom Veerappan, could have such a soft side.
