John Morrison is a writer, DJ, and Sample-flipper from Philadelphia. His work has appeared in NPR Music, Red Bull Music Academy, and more. Here he considers The Roots' debut long-player offering a social and musical history.
Okay, more a newsletter or a pamphlet than any 'book' - it's a single essay that charts the build to The Roots releasing their debut major label full-lengther. It's a compelling piece of context-digging music journalism. I really enjoyed this - an album I love was suddenly heard again with new ears; hearing it almost for the first time based on the knowledge gained from reading this. Recommended. A new form of music journalism.
