Beautiful short chapbook from Mary Frances. Frances takes photographs of urban surfaces and finds images that uncannily evoke natural landscapes. Finding places where exposure to the elements has caused decay, and mosses and moulds reclaim concrete, Frances captures pictures suggesting vast mountain ranges, shorelines and wide horizons. Most of the images hint at the meeting of land or sea with sky.
At first sight Mary Frances’ photographs look like landscapes, sometimes aerial photographs, and sometimes photos taken from the ground, but they aren’t your typical landscapes. They are actually close ups of walls in urban areas. I find them quite moody, and interesting.
