If I thought working for one Fae fixer was hard, working for two should be great.
Jack Frost stole me away from Avilion for more than kicks and giggles: someone is plotting an attempt on Queen Nicnevin's life, and I'm just the dryad to help hunt down the assassin. But the underworld of Annwyn holds more than just knives in the shadows—it holds the secrets of my past and future. With the Wild Hunt running...well, wild, and the tensions rising between my two bosses, I might find far more than I bargained for in the world of the Unseelie. And when the knives come out to strike...I'd better not be in their way.
Breath of Frost is book two in Dark and Wicked Fae, an urban fantasy Fae romance where the heroine doesn't have to choose.
Cate is a USA Today Bestselling Author who loves all things passionate and paranormal with a side of horror. She lives in the South with her family and pets, and loves every kind of coffee, horror and fantasy movies, and cats. Reading is her favorite hobby when she’s not writing.
Hmmmm, I can't remember if our H was this squeamish? I know she's new to all this, but I feel this line of work is really not for her. She can't handle a lot, and she makes some questionable decisions? Her choices really confused me. Her riding her bike alone to the bar to meet up with a friend while angry humans have already made a attempt on her life and are attacking fae like freaking terrorist? Yes she is attacked! it was definitely a very tstl moment we all seen coming? She is pretty hurt by this attack, yet not even a bit more in the read she pulls another tstl move? You work for the fae as a investigator, you and ur boss and others are working on stopping all the crap going on. And yet when you start putting thing's together you don't grab ur men to stop the bad guy? You go half cocked like a freaking cowboy getting hurt again? I'm sorry, but where is this women's common sense? It's like she's got something to prove to to everyone, followed by wanting to just die to be a hero. I just couldn't get over our H's thought process
I liked the first book, but this one seemed chaotic and without any flow, no chemistry between the characters. But worst of all was the TSTL heroine, like are you fucking kidding me? She was absolutely useless, made dumb and stupid decisions and acted more like a YA heroine than a grown ass woman. More things bothered me, but the h was the worst. Such a shame, because Corvin is one of the few RH authors that tend to write better characters.
Talk about an explosive ending… Now that Briallen has discovered the identity of the assassin I knew things were going to get crazy but I still didn’t expect this. There’s a whole lot of mysteries unveiled here like who her father is but literally everything and everyone is in jeopardy, hell the whole kingdom is now. Not sure what could be next for Briallen. The relationship seems to complete by the end of the book but oddly it’s not ever really much of a discussion between them all, just something that seems accepted. The guys are super possessive but mostly cause she really gets her ass kicked here far too often. Hopefully whatever’s next for her will involve less blood being drawn.
4.7 stars. Ok. We’re starting to get some answers. I’m still sad we only get Briallen’s POV, I would really like to be inside her mens’ heads.
Still. I’m having a really good time unraveling things with her and getting to know everyone. This series has the slowest moving relationships out of all of this author’s books that I’ve read so far. She’s only had sex with two of the guys. And I feel like things are just not completely solid where each of their relationships with her are concerned. They haven’t really had that one moment where things just click into place and settle permanently.
I don’t know. This next book has a lot of things to get done. I’m excited to see how it all happens.
This book was a bit more chaotic than the first, and I didn’t love it quite as much.
BUT.
I enjoyed seeing more of Jack. I liked seeing more of Briallen and her powers, and even a bit of where she came from.
I’m enjoying that each of the mc’s are kind of with her on their own. They cross paths with the other guys every once in a while, but they aren’t all playing at one happy family, and it’s kind of nice. I like seeing each relationship develop differently and on its own.
I will say that these books have been pretty obvious, with no real twists involved, so the focus is really much more on the relationships of Bri and the guys rather than any real espionage or detective-ing, even though it is a big part of the plot.
One thing I really enjoy about Cate Corvins's novels is that the romance is there, but they also have a strong fantasy storyline. This novel takes the reader deeper into the story and ends on such a dramatic note. I have to move on to the next one in the series.
Not as good as the first one, but still loved the setting
Things i loved: The setting still is the coolest! -I still loved Briallen a ton for most of the book. She's empathetic, hardworking and creative with her problem solving. -All three guys are awesome and I liked the way they've started working together. -finding more about her heritage as well as all the interesting ways she grows or interacts with plants. Dryad powers are flipping cool!
Things I didn't love: She didn't explore Annwyyn side at all compared to the original city inspite of most the book taking place there (aka too much time in frost mansion. I wanted to see more of the unseelie city!) -huge part of the plot near the end was just awful. Her putting on a hero complex before the potential harm of a victim just was so out of character compared to the first book. She sees both fixers twice and the dark knight and doesn't tell a single one that she knows who the probable killer is. The queen should have her arrested for hiding evidence. All this so she can do it herself. It would have made more sense for them to have planned an entrapment together as a team and then have it ruined by her oath after it was sprung. -literally has romantic interlude while killer is supposedly going to strike. In the first book protecting people came before making out. I was so disappointed in her at this point in the book. Even if I really love the character that was her partner in the moment.
I'll definitely be reading the next one hoping it will have more of Briallen from first book but guys dynamics and tree awesomeness of the second book.
I really enjoyed this sequel and Cate honestly makes me want to try more fae books. I had trouble putting this book down because of all of the twists and turns as well as the mystery. This book was filled with magic, danger, romance, and dark themes. Bri was still just as sassy and snarky, but I feel like she wasn’t as strong in this book for some reason. I loved getting to see more of Jack and the twins. I still don’t think I can choose a favorite between Gwyn, Jack, and Robin. I adore them all for different reasons and they’re all perfect for Bri. Thistletop stole my heart from his first entrance and I’d love to snuggle him, but apparently brownies don’t like that? Anyways, he can make me a hot chocolate any day because it made my mouth water. I need a magic wardrobe. I really don’t care if it’s old and has an attitude problem- I don’t want to have to think about what to wear for every occasion. I liked learning about The Court of Frost and more about Annywn and the unseelie fae. I’m looking forward to what happens next with Bri and her men!
Ugh, I just love this world so much. I threw down everything else I was reading and finished this in record time, that's how eagerly I was waiting for this installment! Briallen is one of the best heroines I've read in awhile, and all 3 guys are likeable. Even the side characters are memorable. This 2nd of the trilogy mainly features Jack Frost (and who doesn't love an asshole with a heart of gold?), and his sparring back and forth with Bri is great; their slowly growing bond is made more believable by their rocky beginning. When they take a break from digging at each other, they really have a great connection, especially after Bri's revelation (shhh).
A lot more danger and violence in this one, and the way this ended, I expect more in Kiss of Smoke. I wish there was more background info on Robin, Jack, & Gwyn to explain why they ended up where they are; not sure if we'll get that with only one more book :( Though it feels like there's plenty of material for at least one more... (hint hint).
Book 1 was fine. Book 2 was fine too until... the girl (i can't even remember her name, and I was just reading the book) started to unveil books 2 plot.
The author did one of the most pathetic method to create a climax : have the heroine say nothing to no one. AT EVERY F*ing moment in several interactions she could have said I have a hunch its this person. But No! Even though she knew she owed the person a favor and it would be best if someone else went after them. Its pathetic I hate when authors do this. Really!? You had no other way of creating intrigue other than the heroinse suddenly losing her brain ?
The second book of the Dark and Wicked Fae series had me hooked from the first page; we pick up exactly where we left off in book one and I really enjoyed getting to know Jack Frost a bit more and get some insight into his attitude and his vulnerabilities. The mystery of who the Ghostkiller is just seems to get deeper and the plot thickens with the involvement of the Unstained Souls...I also love the progression of Bri's relationships and how she is finally coming into her own as an agent with more confidence and learning about her heritage. Finally realizing that her differences are nothing to be ashamed of was a huge deal to her and really warmed my heart. This was a fanatical book and I'm very much looking forward to book 3. Hopefully we dont have to wait toooooo long lol.
After owing a debt to Jack Frost for saving Robins life, Bri travels to the Frost Court to help uncover a threat against the Unseelie Queen. While there Bri goes undercover trying to gather intel but what she finds turns her world upside down. She now realises that her entire life has been a series of lies by her mother and that the Ghosthand killer knows who she is and that she is working closely with Robin to uncover who he is.
This was just...bad and all over the place. You cant feel the chemistry with the mmcs and the intimate scenes come out of no where. Why do none of these men say a single word during sex?
Why are you always doing dumb things to throw yourself into danger and keeping things from your men, yet you get upset when they do the same. I'm not sure why she was able to figure out the mystery when all of these men were literally trained to investigate this.
i feel about this same i did the first. i think the main characters motives for things are a bit weird and kinda dumb. relationship development is not that great. i enjoyed enough to cont though.
4.5⭐️ I quite enjoyed this one more than the first 1. I felt like there was more of a story, more of a plot, and it explained a bit more, this one was fun to listen to.
I don’t know where I got the stubbornness or energy, but I managed to finish all 319 pages of this book and plowed through.
Briallen, discovers her heritage in this book and that she isn’t everything she seems to be. She also uses her elemental powers to save herself at one point, and was just her regular badass self throughout the whole book.
I love the world building to this book, seeing the different worlds where the Unseelie and Seelie live. We get to know the laws and customs between humans and fae, and the setting blends between magical and modern.
Briallen gives her services to Jack this time to stop an assassin from killing a queen of the Seelie court. Meanwhile, humans called “Unstained Souls” are out to create chaos between the humans and Fae, wanting to rid of the species.
As usual, the romance begins to develop between other characters, and mostly, I’m Team Jack all the way, but hey, I could change my mind.
I loved the first book and this was just as good, giving us some new twists and welcoming us back.
I can't get enough of this series. The mystery, the romance, and the seelie/unseelie hierarchy really grab you and don't let you go. On top of that, you find out quite a bit about Bri in this book, why she is different from other dryads, and you get to see her truly learn to accept herself, partially because of Jack Frost.
Jack's character really seemed to shine in this second book. It was hard to tell what kind of person he was in the previous book and whether he really saw something in Bri or whether he was using her to gain a favor. But this time around, there were so many honest and vulnerable moments from the frozen man that it was hard not to continue liking him. He was able to relate to Bri the most and had truly helped her accept herself and see the greatness in her powers and how important they can be when she opened herself up to them instead of fearing them.
Jack wasn't the only character showing a new side to him either. Robin made a complete 180. Where in the previous book he was guarded and unwanted of any kind of emotional connections, in this book it seemed like he decided to dive right into his feelings for Briallen. He freely showed his feelings, even in the open in front of others, and didn't build his walls back up after anything happened. I have to say I liked this side of him and can't wait to see more.
The mystery and search for Ghosthand is a never ending problem that I'm dying to see solved. Just when you think Bri has everything figured out, more gets added on to everything else. The connections are insane and so captivating. This mystery storyline is such an amazing one that is sure to keep you on your toes. Can't wait for book three!
Full disclosure I’m writing this review at 85% of this book and I’m not finishing it because I’m kinda mad. For the girlies who like multiple guys/RH kinda books this is a book for you but I went into this series not knowing the MFC basically had her own RH. In the first book I was okay with the whole Robin/Gwen rivalry, kinda irritated that she was taking so long to choose one but the lines were kinda blurred with her and Robin sleeping together and them him not acknowledging it AT ALL and just wanting to go back to a professional relationship. That was kinda on him, I get it. Flirting with both of them, even kissing them both, alright. The thing with Robin was like a one night stand kinda thing I thought, maybe. I was expecting her to kinda choose in this book not to have a WHOLE OTHER ROMANCE OPTION. Yeah she hated him at first but I just finished the part where they banged on the balcony and just excuse me???????? Like this girl got cheated on in the first book she knows how it feels but at this point of the book she had also slept with Robin AGAIN and then just bangs Jack a couple days later and feels no guilt????? She is just PLAYING these poor men. Her feelings toward each of them feels the same, it gets repetitive, even the “spicy” scenes just were not doing it for me. Apologies for the rant but it’s truly how I feel. If you’re okay with the MFC kinda/sorta being unfaithful then it would probably be fine for you, but needless to say this book was not for me.

I’m still not TOO familiar with fae and dryads and stuff but this series is SUCKING ME IN. It’s RH but more of a slowish/medium burn. Which is ok because the storyline is so good! This is book 2 and it picks up right at the end of book one. I had forgotten a little bit of book one but I was able to quickly figure out what I was forgetting. I love love love Gwyn! Jack Frost is growing on me. He seems very lonely and kind of misunderstood and those are always some of my favorite H’s. Robin surprised me in this book! Just cause he was SO professional in book 1 but seemed way more relaxed in this book. Clover and Tarragon make me laugh! Those crazy twins. The curveball with The House of Thorns threw me for a loop! But I’m loving that so far. I actually hated the realization that I was almost done with this book because I’m dying to figure out who the Ghosthand is!!! Ugh. Already impatiently waiting for book 3! So so good!
Even though she didn't think that plan through. She did take it into consideration in one way, but completely didn't foresee the situation that actually happened. I guess I can't fault her for that, though.
Anyway, Briallen gets confirmation about her heritage and even finds family that wants her. She is not pleased with Jack over how he handled that, but they did discuss it and definitely made up.
We get to see a lot of the Unseelie world in this book. We also learn about the Unstained Souls, a group of humans wanting to break the Unveiled Accords and kill the fae. It leads to some harrowing moments for Bri and she survived by the skin of her teeth. She saves herself at least one of those times, so I'm all for that.
Then we learn a little more about the Ghosthand when Bri makes a revelation, but still don't know who it is. I have a suspicion, but am probably way off base.
I'm OBSESSED. There was some bullshit going on that prevents me from rating it higher but I was glued to the page for the entire book. The highest offense was by far the MC's behaviour towards the end which was nonsensical and downright stupid but I'm just too addicted at that point to be as mad about it as I'd usually be.
The romance is different from what I've regretfully come to expect in reverse harem romances and I absolutely love it. No I don't want the men to all be besties and happily decide to share her and act as one big family almost from the get go and yes I basically just want her to have a separate relationship with each of them but still have them be entirely devoted to her and her only while being jealous of each other (at least for a lengthy, deeply enjoyable period of time). Is that too much to ask ???
The Good 1) Coherent and encompassing world-building 2) Well-depicted settings with plenty of ambience 3) Strong continuation of series arc 4) Full plot-driven storyline (no cliffhanger) 5) Character revelations are well set-up and satisfying 6) Male leads are compelling and entertaining 7) Romance-driven storylines are engaging and enjoyable 8) Sex positive
Neutral 1) A paint-by-numbers urban fantasy 2) Emotionally superficial 3) Lacking in smut
The Bad 1) Lead female is too stupid too live on several occasions 2) Lead female stops in the middle of a life and death situation, for no rhythm or reason, to have sex 3) Lack of any fleshed-out secondary female characters
I literally read Breath of Frost in one night (who needs sleep? Lol) I was that absorbed in this book that I couldn't put it down. I love Bri (FMC) from book 1 and in this book shes right in the middle of a plot orchestrated by The Ghosthand Killer. Only he isn't the only problem Bri has to worry about. Family secrets, a prejudiced against Supernatural group causing trouble and 3 guys - Robin, Jack & Gwyn all vying for her. I loved that we got to know Jack more in this book. He showed a different side to himself instead of his usual frosty self. Loads of steam, a few laughs (some from Sisse. I love her) and Bri now being one of the objects of The Ghosthand attention all came together perfectly. I'm so looking forward to the next book now because this one was worth staying up for. It was so good!!
I would have given this book a five, but there were a few cases of the MC doing stupid things that a smart girl wouldn’t do. One was going outside at night by herself when it was agreed that she wouldn’t do that and almost getting beaten to death. That was entirely predictable. Another was going to the masked ball without telling any of her boyfriends about her suspicions, and that she may need help that night. Then she somehow didn’t realize her captive would want to use his favour against her to get free, even though she was aware she owed him a favor. And why the hell couldn’t she use the trees to protect herself from him when they fought. Even though she couldn’t strike against him, she could’ve still put them up as a defence against him. Soooo many holes in this storyline and nobody likes a heroine who cannot learn from her past mistakes.

Well Dang what a great follow up in this series. So get ready to be invested once you start reading this book. We have steam, action, mystery, and some emotional moments. So we still don't know who the Ghosthand is and there seems to be some other cult starting up again. The Unstained souls and they seem to be have an issue with Briallen. We also find out that Jack seems to want more from Bri as well. What will happen with these two? Also she happens to call on him a lot this time around. I mean how many times will she get herself in a situations. Well everything gets so interesting when we find out more information about Bri's family. It was shocking!! Then I got to the end and was like noooo! Yes it ends in a cliffhanger so we have to wait to find out what will happen next.
HOW how howwwww does Cate keep sucking me in deeper and deeper?! (that's what he said)
JUST SO GOOD. The world building we saw in book one carries over seamlessly into Breath of Frost, and it's so unique and easy to follow, even when you don't expect the references and connections.
And can we talk about Jack. Frost?! I can't tell you why I've loved him from the first second we saw him, but I do. Bri is funny and witty, and all the guys are amazing and sweet and ugh, my heart - but there's just something about Jack that makes my heart beat faster and you get pulled into this magnetic gravity of his.
Absolutely a great, easy to follow 5 star read, and a series that will hook you in and keep you wanting more!
An excellent series by Corvin full of mystery and intrigue, twists, turns and surprises. And I am so here for all of our girl Briallen’s love interests! I like that they’re from three different sectors so to speak, usually at odds, except for when it comes to Bri. I’m really loving this series so far, though I’ll admit that I enjoyed the first installment more. Briallen frustrated me a little in this one - making some dumb, unthought out decisions without consulting anyone, namely the more experienced agents. But all in all, the book, characters, and world that Corvin has created is fantastic, and I’ll absolutely be continuing with the series - I can’t wait for the next one!
Briallen really comes into her own in this one. We learn a lot more about who she is and where she comes from. She goes through a lot but certainly comes out stronger 💪🏻 She becomes an agent for Jack Frost and the Unseelie Court where all is not what it seems. They certainly have a prickly relationship. Her relationship with Gwyn blooms in this, although there are some heart stopping moments!! Robin finally pulls that stick out of you know where and becomes what Briallen needs. The human/Fae relationships provide the trouble throughout this and endanger their world, but this unlikely quartet are trying to manage the situation.
The plot thickens and secrets come to light as Jack Frost enlists Bri for help, calling in his debt. Set to play another world, she's introduced to the glitz and glamour of the Unseelie world. There were reveals I'd suspected, but it wasn't unsatisfying. I actually felt quite chuffed about it. I admired the progression. When we met Bri in book one she was lost, and I think avoiding her pain and confusion. Forced to confront them, she's growing stronger, taking risks, and standing up for herself. I love it. I'm also down for the growth between her and the men. The push and pull, confusion, lies, and more kept me turning the page. And that's not even counting the action and drama. I feel like this series keeps getting better.
Unfortunately our FMC might have severe head trauma as she made every mistake possible in this book.
Big departure from Book 1 where I thought she was capable - Book 2 saw a lot of dumb decisions and almost backwards character development.
The chemistry here was also lacking. I felt the sex scene with Jack Frost was so completely out of place (at a ball! where you’re trying to stop an assassin!), almost like the author finished the book and realized these characters hadn’t hooked up so she went back and quickly wrote a scene between them.
Also, noticing that none of the males have any dialogue during sex, which is super super weird and discombobulating (especially in audiobook form). Not a single word from them.
