It’ll take more than his battle-hardened instincts to defend her…
CIA linguist Sabrin Harris’s plans for a relaxing vacation went up in smoke when twenty-six hostages disappeared just north of her grandmother’s house in Slovakia. Now, she’s been called into action. Her mission is fairly simple. Not allowing herself to be distracted by the hot-as-sin ex-Australian Commando who’s sent in to help and defend her will be infinitely more difficult.
Iniquus Security operative Ryder Kelly remembers Sabrin as the beautiful woman his dog picked out of the crowd at a tactical K9 competition. When they’re assigned to work together, Ryder soon realizes he could fall for her just as easily as his dog Voodoo did. So, all he has to do now is keep Sabrin alive long enough to get to their happily ever after. Easy, right?
Their timing is all wrong. Romance was never part of the plan. But with enemies closing in, the fragile bond Sabrin and Ryder have formed might be all that allows them to save the day—and each other.
Defender's Instinct is an intense, strangers-to-lovers, action adventure military romantic suspense filled with spies, conspiracies, and international terror. Grab your copy, and let's go!
Fiona Quinn is a USA Today bestselling author, a Kindle Scout winner, and an Amazon All-Star.
Quinn writes action-adventure romance in her Iniquus World of books including Lynx, Strike Force, Uncommon Enemies, Kate Hamilton Mysteries, FBI Joint Task Force, Cerberus Tactical K9 Team Alpha, and Delta Force Echo series.
She writes urban fantasy as Fiona Angelica Quinn for her Elemental Witches Series.
And, just for fun, she writes the Badge Bunny Booze Mystery Collection with her dear friend Tina Glasneck under the pen name Quinn Glasneck.
Canadian born, Fiona Quinn is now rooted in the Old Dominion where she lives with her husband. There, she pops chocolates, devours books, and taps continuously on her laptop.
Now this time around Fiona Quinn has created a smart, strong woman. A female protagonist I can root for and enjoy her machinations in this third installment of the series. The male component is cool as well but really they didn’t feel like they were falling in love. It felt like they were partners-with-benefits and I was happy with that. The dog was well written. The ending was “oh yeah they’re supposed to fall in love and live happily ever after at the end”so there.
“Farsickness. Yes. I know that feeling. Yearning for a place, my place, but not knowing how to get there.” Story has a lot of buildup but not enough action. Loved the dog ❤️
Ryder and Sabrin have been tasked to work together to save 26 kidnapped scientists. They don’t trust each other in the beginning, but the attraction exists.
Voodoo initially chooses Sabrin out of the crowd at a K9 competition, and the three uncover clues together. She uses her amazing linguistic skills to track down the kidnapper, and Ryder protects them and works with Voodoo on several tasks.
Voodoo is a great character, I love his abilities, cuteness, and killer abilities, and his relationships with Ryder and Sabrin.
The writing is a bit choppy, strange punctuation, and the story is also untidy. But, Sabrin’s abilities are very cool with reading and translating. Her combat skills are primo too. Ryder is a tough but giving guy with brilliant military skills.
Defender’s Instinct: Cerberus Tactical K9 is written by Fiona Quinn. It involves INIQUUS, an agency consisting of former military and K9 dogs whose mission is to provide security for those who need it, search and rescue missions, and to perform other missions as designated by the company. Ryder and Ridge are at an international working dog professionals gathering in Czechia near the borders of Slovakia. Various teams from across the world have gathered to take their dogs through a series of courses to see which one is the best. Ryder knew that Voodoo was good; but he knew that Zeus was generally better at these courses. However, on a good day, Voodoo could win. The spectators who were there were generally interested in adding dogs to their kennels or to up the dog’s price on the market. Some were here to gain titles and add certifications to their dog’s resume. They were there just to bring interest to the proceedings and gain additional titles for the dogs. Neither of the dogs were for sale. As Ryder got Voodoo ready to compete, he noticed a woman in the crowd as did Voodoo. He wondered why she was there and why she was rooting for Voodoo. However, he and Voodoo had a course to run and had to pay attention to that. That evening as they were headed to camp, the woman stopped on the road to the camp to talk to them. Then, she went on to the camp and was waiting on them. She was Sabrin Harris, a translator for the State Department. She was on her vacation to visit family in Slovakia when asked to help on a mission. She was to connect with Ryder or Ridge and work with them to locate a bus with twenty-five international researchers and their driver which kidnapped for some unknown reason and ransom had not been asked for to date. Once located, another group would go in and rescue them. Watching Voodoo interact with Sabrin is interesting as is watching him work. These dogs are amazing and the books are full of action.
A Book I think You'll love from beginning to end! This is one of the Authors that I make sure that I have the latest book! All her series are fantastic and truly keeps your attention when start to read them! I love to say that when you start one of her books you should put up a DO NOT DISTURB sign because you really won’t want to put them down. The depths of the characters really pull you into her books! My genre of choice right now is Paranormal romance with vampires and shapeshifters but I stop whatever book I’m reading to start the newest Fiona Quinn novel because they are just soooooooooooooooo good! Ryder, Voodoo and Sabrin’s story will keep you reading until the whole book is finished! Sabrin’s first contact with Ryder was with her standing and watching with a Voodoo water bottle with Voodoo’s name on it to get Ryder’s attention. For Ryder seeing someone with a with a Voodoo bottle is a little concerning as he has no idea that a mission is on the agenda. When they next meet it’s at the site that Riley and Ridge are using for their campers on private property, but Sabrin isn’t going to be the only visitor that they get that night. Now the mission is on and Riley and Sabrin have their mission to save some hostages is on and they can’t stop the feelings that are starting to come into play! You’ll love the story of Riley, Voodoo and Sabrin from page 1! If this is the first book you are looking at to read of Fiona Quinn’s then I suggest you read all her books in the Iniquus series which are The Lynx series, Uncommon Enemies, Strike Force series, FBI Joint Task Force series & Cerberus Tactical K9 series. Trust me you’ll love all her books! I can’t wait to read her newest series that releases in March 2021 titled Danger Signs!
The last of the trilogy and possibly my favorite. VooDoo the K-9 that is. Maybe the story too. 😁
Rory and his K-9 VooDoo are competing in the world series of trained K-9 competitions in the Czech Republic when he notices VooDoo has fixated on Sabrin, sitting in the stands and wiggling a pink water bottle with VooDoo's name emblazoned on it to get Rory's attention. Never having seen her before, he ignores her, until that is she shows up without warning but acting like she should be expected at the camp he and Ridge, who is also competing with this dog Zeus, have set up a few miles away. Rory and VooDoo are part of the same elite private security company as Ridge and Zeus, with Rory's background being Australian Commandos. What follows is Rory, VooDoo and Sabrin working to rescue 26 hostages taken in Slovakia who has warned the US and any private US companies to leave the rescue to them. Sabrin is a linguist and translater, working for the CIA though that is not known to Rory for a while. Of course he has is suspicions. Sabrin happens to be headed to Slovakia for vacation and her Babka's birthday, allowing them to sneak in as tourists, acting like a young couple. No need ot fake the chemistry as sparks flew from their first setting eyes on each other.
Again we have a set of wonderful characters, a great dog, and a layered plot with a finale that you figure out along with the characters. You also get here a really superb layer of cultural and historical information about both Slovakia and Norway. The food descriptions alone had me salivating as they spoke to my German roots.
I'm not sad the trilogy has ended - the author has several series and trilogies loosely connected in this world. I'll be busy.
Sabrin is in the right place, but as far as she’s concerned it’s the wrong time. Her bosses think it’s the perfect time when they hijack her vacation with a mission. Ryder and Voodoo are in the right place at the exact right time to do what they do best: save the day. There are no words to properly describe how much I loved this book. I have already fallen in love with the Cerberus Tactical K9 group as a whole, and now, with each new book, I’m falling in love with each operator-canine pair as I get to know them better, and their own ‘loves of their lives’. I loved these three so very much. Sabrin’s carrying so much angst over what she’s not allowed to share in this mission as well as all the turmoil over her personal edict to “not fall for the hot operator”. Yeah right, like that’s gonna happen. Ryder and Voodoo are sweethearts. They’re committed to being and doing the very best they’re capable of. And I still say they’re sweethearts even when what they’re the very best at being is deadly. I adore the author’s sly snarky humor that creeps through the cracks in the most unexpected places. This is exactly the thing that tickles my funny bone and makes me love her work all the more. I don’t really care what the author has planned for us next, I just know that I need to read it as soon as I can get my hands on it. I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book from the author.
I feel like I'm back in the Even Odds book. A very unusual story, not much like Fiona's political espionage agendas. The plotline was a little..out there for me. It works with Fiona's intricate workings, only this time linguistics is the key basis to revolve the story around. But once again the interaction between H and h is disjointed. The K9 is the reason I started this fiona quinn journey starting with the K9 series then backtracking to start Lynx's series. But this book, number 3, is totally off kilter. There was so many theories and thought processes, I started to get lost as the flow was didnt seem to be there like Ms Quinns previous books. Her romance and relationships writing, for me, Isnt as good as her descriptive international espionage. Voodoo was unusual as a K9. The dog seemed to engulf and dedicate himself to the h immediately. I didn't see the reasoning as to his sudden attraction. Moving from mission focus and obedience to dual loyalties in a novel appears to be a difficult mesh in my opinion. Rupert Channing the narrator is Australian and I breathed a sigh of relief as I didn't want an American voice trying the accent. I'm thinking I might have been thrown off by this story, again, from the narrator, even though he did well in this book.
Defender's Instinct - Cerberus Tactical K9 Book Three. It makes me sad that Quinn has planned only three books in this series. Dogs, strong women, men who get it, and DOGS; a combination that knocks it out of the park EVERY time!
Defender's Instinct is Ryder and Voodoo's story . . . and Sabrin's. In true doggo fashion, Voodoo has more than a little to do with these two strong personalities coming together, and it's amazing to watch it unfold amid the chaos that is their mission.
Sabrin is in the wrong place at what her bosses think is the right time. Ryder and Voodoo are exactly where they need to be. As the three work together to resolve the "mission" and save the hostages, the sparks fly and the pooch is at the centre of it. Intrigue, danger, romance, and Quinn's special brand of humour make for another riveting read. Trust me, you won't put this one down till it's done.
And like me, you'll wait impatiently for what's coming next from an author who has quickly become a favourite!
[I was fortunate to receive an Advanced Reader Copy of the book from the author, with no obligation to review. The opinions expressed are entirely my own.]
This series is expertly written when describing the extraordinary training of Military/Search & Rescue K9’s and their handlers. The suspense plots are extremely intriguing, and action-packed, while also keeping you guessing and anticipating the next turn of events. However, the romance is definitely PG rated, and takes far too long to evolve. This author seems to struggle with using words to describe intense desire, passion, and sensuality. As such she waits too long for the romance to develop into an intimate relationship, and then, only alludes to the sexual relationship. It’s like the fade to black scenes that happen just as things get steamy in a PG movie. I find this very frustrating, and lacking the chemistry and intensity of a true contemporary romance. Although I love the characters and the suspense this author writes, I simply find the romance lackluster. I think I’m going to pass on any other books by this author, because I want equal parts romance and suspense in my romantic suspense novels.
Defender's Instinct is the third books in the Cerberus Tactical K9 series by Fiona Quinn. Ryder is in a tactical K9 competition with Voodoo when his dog notices a woman on the sidelines. Everywhere Ryder turns that same woman is there. Turns out Sabin was on vacation to visit her family in Slovakia for her grandmother's birthday when she is assigned a mission by the CIA. Ryder and Voodoo will be her partners for the mission and since she is a linguist for the CIA she will be able to translate for Ryder. To help with their cover they go to Sabin's family for the birthday celebration of her grandmother. Of course her family now has expectations there will be a wedding announcement soon since Sabin brought her boyfriend to meet her family. She can do damage control later, it's all for the good of the mission. There is danger at every turn, they are being followed by four men, they get shot at but they can't let that stop them, They have a mission to save 26 lives. I loved this book. The characters are amazing and the story is original. I love Voodoo. This is a must read!
I made it to 50% (proud of myself bc it was a CHORE) and it literally took than long for the H & h to be in the same room. You're thinking slow burn, right? Nope. Literally you could count down 10 seconds and the h (having just survived a car bomb) runs and throws herself at the H and they have sex. Followed by I love yous.
Had to stop reading because I hated both main characters. Why?? Because wtf!?!? You WERE IN LOVE and didn't even fucking call each other ONCE in 10 years? (Yes, they said it in the past too) How can I root for you to get together when you had 10 years with no obstacles and just. Didn't. Call. Or creep each other on social media. Or ask a friend of a friend.
That. Isn't. Love. You don't deserve love. And don't get me started on the boring expositions I suffered through for over 150 pages just to find out that you didn't call you one big love for a decade cause you're too lazy.
I enjoyed this story! It pulled me in from beginning to end and held my attention the entire time. I enjoyed watching Sabrin and Ryder come together for this mission and figure things out. They get thrown together with pretty much no warning before they are in public scrutiny acting their part on a mission to rescue 26 hostages. Both had other plans and things going on when they got pulled in for the assignment and neither knew each other previously. Voodoo, Ryder's K-9 partner, immediately liked and was drawn to Sabrin and treated her like part of his pack. The story was intriguing with the people following them and trying to figure out if it was separate or part of their mission. The story was entertaining and had plenty going on. I enjoyed it and hope there are more Cerberus K-9 Alpha team stories coming or at least getting to see them again in other Iniquus stories.
While at a dog show, Iniquus tactical team, Ryder Kelly and his Malinois, Voodoo leave a competitive dog show and are partnered with CIA linguist Sabrin Harris to locate hostages, Iniquus is contractually obligated to help but warned not to help. Ryder and Sabin have questions. why they’re paired together, why agents are chasing them, the ongoing political chess game and any alternate mission.
The pacing wasn’t my favorite butto my taste, the characters, suspense and mystery work well here and the romance is cute with Ryder, proud owner of a super-player attitude and Sabrin is fine with guys that are emotionally unavailable at this point in her life. Working through distrust on the case in close quarters ppp[;the pair separately wonder why they aren’t looking for permanent relationships. Rating: 4.25stars
Wow, I think the Cerberous Tactical K9 books just keep getting better and better. The emphasis in Defender's Instinct was on intrigue, suspense and danger. Ryder and his K9 Voodoo are tasked with partnering up with Sabrin in order to find a busload of missing scientists in Slovakia without dcausing an international incident. Easier said than done once they figure out they have not one but two problems on their hands. Ryder always thought marriage and commitment wasn't for him but Sabrin captures his interest from the moment she first sees him...standing in the nude. He knows she's more than just an interpreter working for the US Embassy. The longer that they're together and the more trouble they dodge the more he wants her. Sabrin for her part started falling at first glance but she needs to keep her eye on the mission, rescuing the hostages.
This book is a tense rollercoaster ride for all involved. It is full of dogs, competition, kidnapping, suspense, trust issues and one hell of story you won't be able to put down. The storyline is intense and succinct. There are so many characters that it is a testament to the author's talent that she can keep the threads untangled. The characters truly move this story along and you will fall into it and have to know how it ends. There are old and new characters and each one has a distinct footprint in the story. Ryder and Sabrin's connection builds throughout the story. Voodoo Ryder's working dog immediately has a connection with Sabrin and it becomes his job to calm and protect her. As always this author does a fantastic job and you will enjoy this book. I highly recommend that readers should look into more of her books.
Dogs know best. The K9 angle is present from the start and I loved how it flowed throughout the entire story. Seeing CIA agent Grey again was also a bonus.
There is a new couple and a new assignment with a slew of questions. Ryder and Sabrin have n instant connection and Voodoo know there is something special about Sabrin. The details about dual citizenship, the previous case troubles, the side angle of dog napping...this story had so many details to add to the overarching concern of the kidnapped researchers.
Well written and fast paced. This is a great K9 action romance that builds off the same company and a few characters in the Iniquus world. Another great read and addition!
Fiona Quinn's books are enjoyable and suspenseful. I loved the linguistic aspects of this book and how sayings in one language mean absolutely nothing in another. For instance "dog gone it" in English doesn't mean anything when translated to Slovokian. Thus, the role of the Sabrin, who intended to vacation visiting her Slovokian family and ended up translating and negotiating for the kidnapping of 26 environmentalists, four of them American. This book is more about the relationship FBI and CIA maintain and the romantic relationship between two strangers pretending to be married in order to locate and free the hostages while using their real personas as their "cover". Very clever. The dog is along for cozy comfort and fierce protection.
This was a lot better than I expected. New to me author, it is great little supsense, military intrigue with Australian security operative Ryder and his canine Voodoo. He is at dog trials contest with co-worker and their dogs. This is to showcase his business Iniquus Security and their trained canines. He is roped into working with CIA linguist Sabrin Harris. She is on vacation to visit her grandmother’s house in Slovakia. They are tasked to find kidnapped scientists as she is familiar with the area and speaks several languages. He and his dog are there to assist. This was great audio by Rupert Channing. It is intense, strangers-to-lovers, action adventure military romantic suspense filled with spies, conspiracies, and international terror, totally enjoyed it.
This is the 3rd book in Fiona Quinn's K9 series. It's Sabrin, Ryder & Voodoo's story. Ryder with his K9 Voodoo and Ridge with his K9 Zeus, are representing Iniquus at an elite K9 trial course in Czechia. Sabrin, on vacation visiting her grandmother, is also at the trials with her eyes on both of them. There is a situation within the country and Sabrin is a linguist who speaks the language and has been assigned to help Iniquus. Problem is... she knows, but they have not yet been briefed. But Voodoo knows that Sabin is perfect for him and Ryder. Fiona weaves intrigue with linguistics and problem solving. Another great read in the world of Iniquus!
This is Ryder and Voodoo’s story. I loved every second of it. It is super suspenseful and action packed. Ryder meets a linguist from the State Department, Sabrin, who will be his partner as they search for a bus load of kidnapped scientists in Slovakia. Sabrin is in the country for her grandmother’s 90th birthday. Since the US has been ordered to stand down, Iniquus steps up to fulfill their company’s duties. The two pose as lovers and it doesn’t taken much effort or their parts. Voodoo is totally taken with Sabrin. Loved the different languages and I learned some new Aussie terms lol.
An Aussie and a Slovakian, now There's Communication Issues
It starts as Ridge and Zeus, Ryder and Voodoo are competing in a multi-national Working K9 event. Voodoo is doing very will, but was notified that he and his new 'girlfriend' Sabrin are going into Slovakia to see her babka for her birthday, then sightsee for his benefit. Really, they are tracking down 26 kidnapped environmental scientists to aid in their rescue. Of course, their see bumps in the road, and difficulties put in their way by the good guys. They do see Sabrin's babka, you don't turn 90 without your family!
Ah! Sabrin, Ryder and Voodoo slot together like puzzle pieces, made for each other and totally comfortable...what they aren't comfortable with is the lack of intel for their mission, the game playing by agencies and governments, but this actually helps them grow closer. They only have each other and so all three have to trust each other completely to be successful. They make an awesome team and I especially liked the mental running commentary we get throughout from both Sabrin and Ryder. The third book in the series and the third hit! Please tell me there are more to come in this series, I read the first three books on Kindle Unlimited.
This review will cover the first three Cerberus books in the series. Can the books be read as a stand-alone I would say yes. I started with Survival Instinct and did not feel lost at all. It was book two of this series where I felt I might be missing part of the story. So I went back and picked up Weakest Lynx. I also read Missing Lynx (which ends on a cliffhanger so…). I moved back to this series.
This is my first series featuring a K9. I have enjoyed the first three books. On this book especially I wish there was more working backstory on Sabin. I would have really liked to know what she did for her employer. (Trying to stay spoiler free.)
When linguist Sabrin Harris goes to see her grandmother to celebrate her 90th birthday in Slovakia, she doesn't anticipate that she will end up working to rescue a group of scientists. The question is, can she fit in with Iniquus Security man Ryder Kelly and his killing machine dog? And, if she can pull that off, can they rescue the people Kelly's group has been hired to find?
Making things more complicated is the growing feelings between Sabrin and Ryder when both agree that now is not the time for romance or even just a roll in the hay. So, how are they going to manage everything facing them?
I thoroughly enjoyed this series. I'm a big believer in signs and dreams. When I read the name Ridge (my father) then Evo ( my friend ) in the same book my antennas went up. I haven't figured out what it all means but it'll come to me. Fiona writes so intelligently, and makes you think. With our political climate I wonder how much the public is being manipulated. I'm guessing a lot. I think we have to stop and listen and think about what's really going on in our world. Thank you Fiona.
Former Australian Commando Ryder has long been a player.
His career path with the military and later with Iniquus was not suited to long term connections- and his six times married father was not a great role model for the marital state.
Sarin is also a dual citizen- Slovak with a submariner father
Together with K9 Vodoo they are a force to be reckoned with while they face more than a few crazy twists trying to rescue research scientists
Can they find and hold onto themselves and each other along the way?
Ryder and Voodoo are at a competition when Voodoo spots her in crowd.
Ryder and Voodoo are a a world competition for dogs when Voodoo spots her in crowd and had trouble not going to her. Ryder was torn, she was good looking and he couldn’t place where he had met her before but he figured she was trouble waiting one way or another. Then she follows him home and he finds he has a new partner and his dog is in love. She is to be his translator and cover for his next assignment. He just has to keep his attraction under control while keeping them alive.
Thankfully this wasn’t bogged down by the usual romantic baggage typically found in a lot of romance books. Instead it focuses more on the kidnapping and the intrigue as Ryder, Sabrin and Voodoo work together to locate and rescue the missing scientists and untangle just who is behind it. Loved Voodoo and his relationship with Ryder, plus how he turns into a big baby for Sabrin.
A fun read that can be picked up and read as a stand-alone.
Defender's Instinct: Fantastic story of romance, rescuing and K9's. I liked how Sabrin her eye on Ryder and Voodoo they whole time they were competing. Voodoo did not take his eyes off of her the whole time they were waiting their turn. Ryder has hesitant about her when she came to where Ridge and he were staying. She grew on him and he could not stop his feelings for her. It was a great story.
