Caelo et in Terra

Rate this book
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven
... sicut in caelo et in terra  The saints were not picture perfect. But they were real men and women who loved Jesus in the midst of their struggles with sin and suffering. In the most difficult moments in history, these men and women were lights in the darkness, prophets of hope, and beacons of peace. Joyfully persevering through life's trials, they lived the Gospel in unique, fascinating, and inspiring ways.

The Daughters of St. Paul at Pauline Books and Media noticed that most books on the lives of the saints are paperback and do not have a presentation as timeless or as beautiful as we believe the lives of the saints deserve. For this reason, we decided to take on the monumental project to write, design, and illustrate a volume of 365 saints and blesseds.

Supported by the prayers of our sisters in convents and Pauline Books and Media bookstores around the world, over thirty of our sisters worked on all aspects of this timeless volume for over a decade. It's our hope that it will reflect the striking beauty of the saints' lives--a meeting of heaven and earth. Through the beautiful reflections and exquisite artwork, may you forge deeper bonds with these holy men and women in heaven who show us how to live in Christ. Let's become saints!

This is such a beautiful book. I’m glad I read through it daily for 2021.
Sr. Danielle’s illustrations are incredible. I loved learning about Saints I am already familiar with and many who were new to me.
I appreciated the daily reflections as well.
This is a must for your bookshelf and makes for a beautiful gift.

I should preface my review by saying that I am, and have for my whole life, been a Protestant. In more recent years, a somewhat high church American Anglican Protestant, but still always a Protestant. I am very ecumenical in my outlook and have many close friends and family who are Catholic and Orthodox (which in part explains why my wife would even get me this book), but I am still, and plan to remain, a Protestant.

I would guess that if you were a really serious Catholic, this book would be just perfect for you. For me, I love the style of this book, and used it every evening as my end of day devotional. It was great for that. I picked up speed at the end of the year because I wanted to start a new devotional for the new church year (which starts tomorrow).

The reason I would give it only 4 stars is that the selection of saints for this book was just not very ecumenical or historical, which are my two tastes. It tends to skew toward three categories: ancient saints about whom we actually know very little (even if devotion to them has always been strong), random medieval saints with an often extreme devotion to a certain element of Catholic devotion I can't really get into (like the sacred heart or the Eucharist), or more recent Catholic saints (often martyrs) that pretty much no one has heard of. That last category was my favorite by far. I loved learning, for example, about the many Catholic martyrs from World War II that I hadn't known of. When this book did cover the big names that are in pretty much every Christian calendar of saints, it got into such little detail (that's the nature of this book) that I didn't learn anything I didn't already know.

There is much to love about this book, and I would commend it to any Christian to read, whether to stretch or encourage your faith, depending on your Christian background. I also think it was very interesting to read this through in the age of cancel culture. How many of these saints, like, say Junipero Serra, would be seen as villains by many moderns? As someone who studies history who thinks we should always see the good and the bad of people from history in all if their nuances and that the true mark of sainthood is humility, this book was a welcome tonic from the current trend of torching almost anyone or anything from the past. Certainly, this book did not deny complicated parts of the lives of many saints--especially parts that our challenging for us as 21st century people. This book was definitely strengthening for my faith in a tough year overall for anyone human.

All in all, though, I would have to say that this book attempted something really great, but I am not really its target audience. If I could use the Episcopal/Anglican calendar of saints as a base and then add in more Orthodox ones, more Celtic/Northumbrian ones, and then more from key periods of Church history, I would have loved it that much more. Also, I think I would go for two pages rather than one per person because sometimes really significant or complicated elements of saints' lives had to be left out that I think were a disservice to the saint and the reader.

What can I say other than this books is amazing? The artwork is astounding. The backing is beautiful. The lives of the saints are short and concise-perfect for daily reflections! I absolutely love waking up to read this every day. I can’t recommend it enough. A must have for any Catholic/anyone interested in the lives of the saints!!!

We received this book as a gift. in our morning devotional, our family reads the saint of the day and the daily Mass readings. We have learned about so many saints that were previously unknown to us.

It is written in such a simple and engaging way. We love the meditations and prayers at the end of each page. The artwork is lovely and are just enough depth and interest.

Quite often the saint on a particular day did not die on that day, nor is their feast day that particular day. I'm not sure why that is, but I assume in charity that they can't cover them all and some stories they wanted to tell. Hats off for a fabulous addition to our daily prayer life.
