Government agent comes home to see his father for the last time as sleepy town is invaded - 4.5 stars

Shotgun, Colorado has two abandoned mines. The businesses are suffering. Most of the young people have moved away. After 25 years, Layne Parrish returns to his home town to see his father who is dying of cancer.

The mines failed years ago. There is one new business -- a tourist attraction "Colorado Western Slope Big Cat Sanctuary" (CWS-BCS) featuring encounters with large cats. A sketchy militia organization calling themselves Disciples of True America has infiltrated the town. The Disciples' purpose is not clear but seems sinister; people have disappeared and no one seems to care enough to investigate.

Layne grew up in Shotgun. Several of his friends are still there including his first girlfriend (from 25 years ago). Layne knows the back roads and trails. The local leader of the Disciples seems to know that Layne Parrish has connections with the US government; he orders his men to kill Layne.

There are several flashbacks to Layne's US government career including an order to kill someone on the day before Layne is to be married.

Shotgun's Mayor Winnie Caldwell provides a view of the Town's dire financial straits as CWS-BCS sues the town in an apparent attempt to bankrupt it. She is an alcoholic with no apparant ties to Shotgun.

Many threads including incompetence of the leaders, advanced age of the residents and the rundown economy are interrelated. Why the Disciples have any interest in Shotgun is a mystery that is not revealed until late in the story.

In addition to his high school friends, Layne gets some help from a security advisor whose hacking skills are nothing short of miraculous. Heart pounding excitement is delivered as promised.

The climatic carnage of a gun battle between townspeople and Disciples includes an invasion by the big cats who escape CWS-BCS.

Layne Parrish has returned to Shotgun, Colorado where he was raised with his brother, Randall. His parents haven't been together for years and he's there to check on his dad, whom he hasn't seen in 25 years. He knows his dad had had a stroke and has lung cancer and he just wanted to see the old man before he died.

George Parrish is on the feeble side with one side of his body diminished to limited movement and his face drooping. He's lost a bunch of weight. He's nothing more now than a little old man. He isn't isn't all that happy to see Layne and as abusive people do, he blames everyone else for his own loneliness. I admired Layne's strength in refraining from reminding his father that it was he who had driven everyone away. No matter what, it would've been tempting to tell someone like that just what you think, but Layne is bigger than that. He's stronger than that. He's more forgiving than that. The anger he felt all through the years has dwindled into pity. It was a stark reality check for him to see his dad like this, but he soon discovers that his dad is complicit in some shady dealings with some bad dudes in town.

Meanwhile, he meets up with his old girlfriend, Molly Waffles. What a surprise she was, even to him. I think he loved her as much as teenagers could be in love back when they were dating in high school, but she's done a one-eighty. He likes the new Molly.

He also meets up with his former friend from high school, Keegan, who knows the area mines, as does Molly and that comes in handy when Layne starts uncovering the truth about these formidable foes in this tiny, dying town.

The Disciples of the True America are moving into Shotgun and bringing their hate and mayhem with them and George Parrish is somehow involved with them and won't tell Layne anything about it. It's frustrating to Layne. All he wants to do is help eradicate these people--and he has good reason to.

I don't want to throw any spoilers into this and I'm finding it hard not to. There's a lot going on in this book and all of it is relevant to the end of the story, even the interludes that may not seem to fit while you're reading them. They do. There is also intrigue, action, and surprises. I gasped a few times.

I thought I knew everything about Layne Parrish. I know he's a big, muscular guy at 6'4" and 230 pounds. I know he's got a military hair cut and that he's blonde. I know he's got sleeves of tattoos. I know he's divorced and the father of one little girl named Cameron. I know he's slept with his boss, Daphne, and that he's got friends in Harry Boukadakis and Micah Reed. I've read every one of the books in this series. But I found out something new about him while I was reading this. He's got a credit score of 810. Impressive! It's a small fact that I found interesting. I like learning new things about characters I've been reading about for a long time. Most people probably won't even notice it, but it added another dimension to his character that I had never thought about.

This is a fantastic book. I loved everything about it. The action, the tension between George and Layne Parrish, all of characters and their unlikely interactions--it was an incredible read. I especially loved the ending. It was unexpected and satisfying.

Fantastic book! And how I love that cover. It's haunting, spooky, and screams "danger".

I received a review copy from the author at my request and this is my honest opinion. I must admit that this story started a bit slower than the previous Parrish stories, but it finished in typical gangbuster fashion. Disciples should know better than to think they can mess with Layne Parrish's hometown and get away with it. That's just not going to happen. There is plenty of action here, with a full load of twists and turns. I was very happy to see that one of my favorite characters (K-Books) makes an appearance here. His knowledge and loyalty to Layne always improve the story for me.

I did have two very minor issues with the story. Usually, I can figure out at some point the relationship between the main storyline and the intervals that are included from Layne's past. This time, I might have an inkling of what Mr. Heskett was attempting to bring out, but I'm not 100% sure. One thing I do know; they didn't detract from the storyline, so that makes it fine. The other thing is the ending felt incomplete. In fact, it just stops almost in the middle of a sentence. And the author's notes at the end mention a sequel, so I'm not sure if the next book will pick up where this one came to a screeching halt or will turn out to be just another Layne Parrish story. (Believe me, I don't mean 'just another Layne Parrish story' the way it sounds. They are all high-quality action stories that I thoroughly enjoy. I just wasn't sure how else to phrase that.) Whatever it is, I will be more than ready to get my hands on it and you should be, too. These are great stories and shouldn't be missed.

This is another exciting adventure in the Layne Parrish series. In this story, Layne has returned to Shotgun where he grew up to see his father who is dying of cancer. No sooner than when he arrives while looking for his father, he gets into a fight. His father advise Layne that the individual that he was fighting was his ride home. After taking his father home Layne returns to town where he visited with an old friend who told Layne that Layne's father was into something serious. He described an event and mentioned individuals who had a unique tattoo. Layne was familiar with the tattoo.

When he got back to his father's house, he asked him about it and got no response. The following day he went back into town and was going to discuss the issue with the sheriff, but the sheriff was gone. He then decided to talk to the mayor. He was unable to talk with the mayor and met Jordan, her assistant. The mayor had concerns with a lawsuit that BCS had initiated.

Layne, finding no help, decided he needed to look into it himself. He was ultimately able to uncover what was going on eventually with assistance from his friend Keegan and his old girlfriend Molly. The events leading up to the discovery have quite a bit of action.

In addition to Layne's visit, it also provided info on Layne's marriage and what event other than the wedding that occurred.

In order to find out what was going on in Shotgun and what the driving force was that caused his father to assist, then you must read this book. You won't be disappointed.

I received a review copy from the author at my request and this is my honest opinion. I've read a few of the Layne Parrish (and Micah Reed) novels now. While I didn't think of them as 'my genre', I heard about them while reading the Six Assassins series and was intrigued. I'm glad to say that these novels do not disappoint, there is a little something for nearly any genre of reader. In Shotgun Mine, there is a falling back to reveal a little more of the history that makes Layne who he is today. Family dynamics are explored with his more than difficult father, George. If one wonders why Layne is such a devoted and patient father, this sure helps explain that formation. Meeting Keegan and Molly was a treat, and I hope that Molly continues to make an appearance now and then. It's a struggle to reconcile his high school sweetie with the Molly of today, yet Layne appreciates her now more than ever. Of course, this is not just a high school reunion/family history novel - there is action, uncertainty, and absolute mayhem. I loved the surprise of bad-guy Beckett, his cunning infiltrations and aspirations. Heskett's introduction of him is picture-perfect. And because a townful of evil disciples just isn't enough, let's throw in a couple of dangerous old mines and a few loose big cats! Overall, this is a must-read.

Layne Parrish, aging spy/assassin/something, while not at his best, is still better than I could ever hope to be But still, he's not beyond his prime, and it's still interesting read about his exploits, maybe even more so that it's not guaranteed he will be unscathed. Spoiler: he is scathed.

Layne goes back to the small town of Shotgun, CO, where he grew up. Something is off in the town, but Layne is not sure. He's more interested in going to see his dad. Well, "interested" is a strong word. In other news, some bad guys show up in the little town of Shotgun, bad buys that have shown up in several Layne Parrish and Micah Reed stories. Why are they in Shotgun? And exactly what is Shotgun Mine? Also, some friends/acquaintances/enemies from his high school are around. And then there are some cats of unusual size here and there.

Mr. Heskett has delivered another stellar story. This one is a little different, though. It's a slower buildup with a slower buildup but more explosive ending. Excellent characters and development (you can't help but fall in love with one in particular). Such a good story, very satisfying.

Highly recommended.

Layne Parrish has come home to see his dying father.
He is greeted the same way he left.
His old grizzled father really does not care; that he had come back home, nor that he wanted to see him, or settle their differences before he dies.
Layne’s hometown was about how he left it. A dying mining town.
He found it had new underlying issue that he could not put his finger on.
He found a couple of old classmates that filled him in on some odd circumstances and all of a sudden life smacked him in the gut.
Layne saw everything around him dying: his father, the town, his friends, the way of life of his old mining town.
He could not fix or revive all of the issues but old haunts had to be reckoned with or nothing would be at peace.
Layne is not a one man army but with a little help from his old fiends mysteries and miseries are taken to task.
Read this book. I hope a sequel comes soon.

Jim Heskett’s Layne Parrish series always offers a fun story with action and mystery for our hero to deal with in his usual confident way. This time Layne is back in his childhood hometown to see his dying father and maybe try to repair some of their fractured relationship. While there he quickly discovers there’s something much more dangerous to the town than his fathers infamous temper. I have enjoyed each of the books that make up this series and I think that this might very well be my favourite so far. Layne does what he does best and that’s taking on the bad guys and he calls on a few faces that will be familiar to readers of the previous books but there’s also a few new characters and these are what raise the book above the others for me. Maybe Jim Heslett will feature them more in the future, I hope so. Overall, this is a fun action thriller that flies by.

Yet again Jim Heskett treats us to a brilliant read. Gripping you from page 1 this latest instalment of the Layne Parish books not only gives u action, suspense & a little mystery it give you more of an insight into Layne himself. Layne goes to visit his ailing farther for a last goodbye but un beknown to him the town is being used by a gang preparing to set up a huge drugs lab. As Layne gets drawn into helping old friends save the town he's met with snow, mines, big cats as well as gang members wanting to blow him away all of which he takes in his stride. Helped by his old girlfriend who is now 1 serious kick ass bird. The introduction of some new characters from Laynes past really makes the story kick ass. Thoroughly enjoyed this book & highly recommend it. The title will make sense once you reach the end of the book which has a nice twist.

When Layne returns to his boyhood town of Shotgun to say goodbye and perhaps reconcile with his dying father, he finds a town in trouble and in need of the skill set and connections he established during his years in a "government job".
Shotgun Mine is an action packed thriller with a healthy dose of mystery thrown in. Meeting Layne's father and some of his childhood friends explains a lot about our hero as does their unhesitating determination to pitch in and help him battle bad guys and exotic cats.
I loved the story and am hoping the post-script's suggestion that there is a sequel coming, as opposed to another stand alone Layne Parish story, means there will be another Shotgun story, cuz boy do I have questions.

You would think the stories about Layne Parrish would get old but Jim Heskett always manages to bring up some new aspect of his live.
Layne is going back home after 25 years.
Here we see him reconnecting with some old school friends and trying to establish some kind of relationship with his father who is in poor health. Besides the fact there wasn't much love and good memories between father and son to make the meeting any easier. The small town seems to have secrets that could become deadly for himself, his friends and father. We see some flashbacks of Layne on his wedding day. For the readers that have gotten to know Layne across the various books might feel a bit sad how the marriage ended but must realize how it started there wasn’t much chance of surviving. Love does not conquer all.
Hope we will be able to read more about Layne

This is a great Layne Parrish book. Although it is the sixth in the series, there was enough background that it would be easy for someone who had never read a Layne Parrish story to follow along easily, and it didn’t go over old story lines so much that it would bore someone who had read the whole series. Nice balance. The characters (as always) were engaging, relationships and dialogue were believable, the storyline was interesting, there were a few nice twists, and there was no cliffhanger. Most importantly, though, it was an engaging and fun read. Definitely recommended.

I received a free copy of this book in advance of publication, but this is my honest and voluntary review.

Layne Parrish pays what may be a final visit to his hometown of Shotgun to visit his dying dad. Will he be able to make peace with his dad or will dad be the same old cuss as Lanye remembers?
While in Shotgun, Layne "senses" strange happenings in his hometown.
Tigers and leopards are loose in the area.
Snow is falling.
The answers are hidden in one of two different dilapidated mines, East Mine or West Mine. Or is there an unknown mine named Shotgun Mine.
Learn what happens to Layne when he returns to his hometown, sees some of his old schoolmates, and fights for his town.

I found Shotgun Mine full of twist, mystery and action. In my opinion Jim Heskett does not disappoint. I give Jim Heskett kudos for surprising me in a couple of things, that does not happen very often. I did figure out who was behind all the trouble from the start, I'm okay with that. I found Shotgun Mine edge of your seat page turner. I did enjoy getting to know about more of Layne's history and where he came from. If you have read the previous Layne Parrish series this is a great continuation. I read on Kindle Unlimited.

Another brilliant Layne Parrish story. A visit to his home town to check on a father with whom he has had a long term bad relationship, puts him in the middle of an unexpected battleground - a criminal organisation basing itself in a small town with many secrets and complex characters. The storyline keeps you guessing and the many twists and turns and constant action ensure you must keep reading.

Hidden treasure?

Layne returns to his hometown of Shotgun when he hears that his dad had a stroke and is dying. They had an antagonistic relationship which hasn't improved wth age. When he arrives, a mystery comes to light as he investigates the role white supremists are trying to secretly play in the town. Murder, hit squads, rickety mines, fist fights, an animal sanctuary (and escaped animals) and old friends make for an interesting return home...

Shotgun Mine (Layne Parrish #6), my thirty-eighth read from author Jim Heskett. Layne goes home. In which flashbacks illuminate Layne's past, questions are answered. You can't wait to turn the next page and read more. I was given a Kindle copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Great Action

Layne returns to meet with his estranged father. He finds himself caught up in a long-term attempt by a criminal organization to produce meth in his old hometown. While he doesn’t know exactly what is going on, he intends to find out. Interesting twists.
There are a few flashbacks to his wedding vacation, which I found a bit annoying.
Quick easy read. ENJOY!
