At the start of the book I thought the author had developed an interesting and complex fantasy world.
As the story progressed I couldn’t help thinking Alba seemed a bit naïve, given her past you would expect her to not only know more, but be a bit more circumspect in her dealings with people, at times she could have been seven rather seventeen.
By halfway I found the story was a bit of a muddle, many of the characters were really just caricatures and the author kept introducing new things almost at random.
I know the book is designated for Young Adults but at times it seemed like it was written by a teenager.

3.5 stars ~

Wow. Do I really want to give a review on this?? Nope.

It had a dragon on the cover, OF COURSE I PICKED IT UP!!

The story really was beautiful, Castel is amazing at what she does. I loved the bonding and Dragon riding, Dragon mages, etc. The epic adventure, and the mystery!! Oh. My. Word. The mystery. Castel is absolutely amazing at writing thriller mystery. I am amazed!!

The world was lovely and I liked the characters.

Reason for my lower rating ~ I really didn't appreciate the magic . . . at all. It wasn't my type. ;P Also there were things that really annoyed me.

Like why does everyone believe Alba has bonded with a dragon if they said she needed proof and she didn't provide it??

How come the bonding was so stinkin' easy??

Why did the MC have to jump to conclusions all the time??

Also I really hated her "running out on class" . . . . this happened every class. She didn't sit one whole class through. I felt like the author kept making a reason for Alba to run out without putting a believable reason behind it.

Anyways I really loved the book, and it had an amazing conclusion!! (Most times how a book ends really affects my mood toward it) A cliffhanger existed after every chapter. . . .perfect. And she provided enough questions with answers to keep me satisfied.

I finished the book in two extremely busy days. :P

A very much low fantasy dragon fantasy story.
The writing, story telling and character creation leave a lot to be desired, if you are mature reader. The book is very much aimed at a young audience and for young readers it can very much work.

If you are an avid fantasy reader and are used to a more matured writing style and fantasy world, then this "fairy godmother" style of fantasy story will bore you to death.

A lot of fast paced confusing "action" (and with action I mean the protagonist doing things and everyone in the story behaving completely illogical, against their own good and being stupid in general). At no point in the story did I feel like it was explained properly what was going on and why people were behaving irrationally. The story in itself did not make much sense and even in the end I was wondering what the fuck I just read.

I will not be reading the rest of the series, the first book is all I really needed to judge the writing.

Klunky; Could Not Finish

This book starts off very klunky and unrefined, unlike the Inheritance Cycle which it compares itself to. The first few chapters are just so adolescent in their text that it makes the story unreadable for me. It starts off so slow, and explains things that do not even seem to have hardly any bearing on what the story is supposed to be. While I like the premise, which is more like a Tamora Pierce novel than anything in my opinion, it just didn't keep my interest enough to finish.

Honestly, I am very disappointed. This book has all the making of a decent series, but it is just poorly executed. The worldbuilding is lacking, many of the characters lack depth, the pacing of the story is odd, things that happen in the plot happen sometimes seemingly at random... the writing just seems juvenile at times. It makes for a boring read.
Overall, it is a meh book. I think, with experience, the author can be a great writer, but this is not a book I can recommend.

One of the strangest books I've read in decades. I can appreciate the author trying to do something different but in this case, it just doesn't work.

Alba is OK and the dragonets are fun but everything else is just a bunch of random overly convoluted randomness. Add in plot holes bigger than a planet and I just couldn't wait to finish reading it.

Of course, I was more than happy to start reading this book... it has dragons, DRAGONS! I mean... say no more ;) I'd give this one a 3.5*

Worldbuilding was good, bit by bit the author introduces us to the world, as such neither confusing nor overwhelming the reader with all the info. All scenes and environments were clear and well detailed.

Character development was decent. We only got to know Alba and Fyrian really. The other characters got introduced and we know a tad about them, but fairly superficial. Alba has the makings of a good heroine, she has a decent head on her shoulders at least :D We know a bit of her hopes and dreams and some of her fears. Really hope though that we get to know everyone on a deeper level in the next instalment, to make them seem more real and believable and not just passing figurants.

Pacing and flow were good, the author kept a good balance between all the action and conversation. I wasn't bored or overwhelmed at any point, really nice pacing actually. I did read the book in one sitting, so yeah, there is that :D

The book itself was well written with no (noticeable) errors. It's a clean teen/YA fantasy.

All in all, it was a nice and enjoyable read, I did expect a bit more of it in terms of character depth, but I'm sure that will come with the next instalment.

Set in the “Seven Kingdoms” universe, the story follows 17-year-old Alba, daughter of Bluebeard and Paloma, and niece of Cendrilla. Although she has tried to fit in the Magical Militia, she failed to demonstrate any magical abilities and as a result her father decided to marry her off to King Magnar of the Savannah Empire. In an attempt to escape this undesired fate, Alba disguises herself as a boy and sets off to Mount Fornax in order to enroll the all-male Dragon Mage Academy. Trouble finds her as soon as she arrives there. A gruesome murder has taken place just before she arrived and she’s the one to discover the body. A wild female dragon is accused of the murder, and without realizing how she forms a bond with her. Which is bad, because if the dragon is executed, then Alba will die as well. Fighting against time, Alba must find a way to exonerate the dragon and save them both.

Action-packed, suspenseful, full of magic, dragons and other mythical beings, “Princess of Dragons” grabbed me from page one! With her unique writing style, Cordelia Castel expands the “Seven Kingdoms” universe adding new uncharted lands to her already wonderfully built world. At the same time, she subtly but definitely addresses gender and racial discrimination as well as family issues.

I’ve been a fan of Cordelia Castel ever since I read the first book of the “Seven Kingdoms” series and I’ve been anxiously waiting for the “Dragon Mage Academy” series. It was worth the wait!!! With each new book, Cordelia Castel surpasses herself and I’m anxious to see what she has in store for us in Alba’s next adventure!!!

Don’t hesitate!!! Grab “Princes of Dragons” now and immerse yourself in a whole new world of magic and dragons!!!

I’ve read worse and I’ve read better; I am glad to say I was wrong about who I thought done the deed. Unexpected twist for sure but also a bit anticlimactic at the same time. I’ll try the next book in the series for sure to see if it’s any better as sometimes book 1 of a series there’s a lot of building of characters and less about story

This first book in the new Princess of Dragons series follows the adventures of Princess Alba (Daughter of Lord Bluebeard and Paloma from the Cendrilla Perault books) as she embarks on her quest to become a Dragon Mage. And with a combination of a murder, a grumpy dragon, keeping up in class and trying to hide behind a male glamour so her father doesn't find her, she certainly has her hands full! I really enjoyed the story, and would definitely recommend it to fans of fantasy mysteries. It doesn't really matter if you've read the previous series - what crossover moments and characters that feature are well explained - but for those of us who have, it's nice to have those little sparks pop up every now and then, and to see how the author has expanded and embellished an already wondrous world. I'm looking forward to seeing what Alba gets up to in the next book - surely she'll have a bit quieter time of it?!
NB I received a complimentary copy of this book, but I always give an HONEST review based wholly on my own opinions

Focus on nausea

Why does the author have an obsession with throwing up and a upset stomach???? Every other page the heroine is either about to vomit or someone else actually is. I really tried to ignore it but at 57% and the writing was still focused on sick I just couldn't anymore.

The main characters are rash and definitely don't use their brains to figure out the mystery, not get in trouble in class, etc etc. I skimmed to see if things improved and they did not. Will not continue this series.

Dragons and a Princess

So the book as a dragon and princess.
This book is really a waste of reading time. The main character is an idiot and the dragon is whiney . Neither the dragon nor princess could think themselves out of a box.

tbh this book was just very boring. I read it to get closer to my reading goal of 2023 and there was really no other reason but that. The translation wasn’t very good and the plot was boring. def not my book.

I really, really dislike Alba but the story is interesting. Not sure I want to continue because Alba is so reckless, stubborn, and frustrating.

Have to say that I am glad I read this one all the way thru. The first part of this book really was slow developing and a bit difficult for me to get through. The first third of the book was really busy with cramming so much info about who was married to who and the geopolitical climate of the world that I almost gave it up a few times. The MC was also difficult to like as she came off as a brat and that continued throughout the book until really the last few chapters.

Once I made it through that part of the book and the story finally started to get going I quickly warmed up to the story. It was a good who-done-it mystery with only a few suspects and some elements of adventure fantasy added in. Also had a twist I was not prepared for with how the rules for magic was laid out in previous chapters.

The MC really developed in her relationship with others which improved her own development of an individual but at the end had a weird abrupt and unsupported turn with her father again.

Overall a good ready and enjoyable once you get past the long setup.

Princess of Dragon's is book 1 in the Dragon Mage Academy series. This is set in the same world as The Seven Kingdoms series. As with The Seven Kingdoms, the world building is exceptional. The story line is great -- a princess fleeing an arranged marriage flees as a boy and enters the Dragon Mage Academy where she/he forms a bond with a dragon accused of murder. Want to know what happens, if the dragon is proved innocent, what interesting magical creatures are encountered on this adventure you will need to pick up this book. Cordelia Castel has a phenomenal imagination and a way with words that draws you into the story where you experience the adventure and emotion along with the characters. If you are looking for an excellently written story with magic, adventure, intrigue, twists/turns, then I recommend this book. Received a copy and this is my voluntary review.

I gave 4 stars because I’ve just given a much worse book 3 stars! So maybe 3.5 stars? I enjoyed the premise and will continue reading the rest of the books. This is not a complex book, sometimes it is even too simple (I know it’s for YA but still..), some parts are too vague or skipped over, like how dragon bonding even occurs. Alba is pretty ignorant, but seems to think she knows best. She’s supposedly had the best education, learning multiple languages etc. Yet she knows absolutely nothing about dragons, or seemingly history.
However, dragons! I love dragons, and I think I’m going to like these dragons...I still don’t know much about them after reading the first book though.
I also like that ogres seem to be the leading power in the world rather than the usual humans or elves, that’s a nice change! Anyway, I’m just rambling now when I could be reading the second book!

Being the unwanted child makes it no easier for a princess. And now it's the time to escape.
Alba Bluebeard, scared of her fate to be a bride to brutal king, enrolls into the Dragon Mage Academy disguised as a boy. Trouble follows her every step, not only in classes, but also in an unfortunate bonding with a dragon accused of murder. To prove her innocence, Alba takes up the investigation on herself.
Fast paced and magical story with lots of adventure and mystery, full of funny scenes and awe-inspiring magical moments. Dragons are magnificent creatures and I love their appearance in fantasy books. Now with the interactions between Fyri and Alba, the book gets a fresh wind, being somehow an outstanding YA fantasy book. The bond is strong and creates a lot of mess, but the chaos leads to beautiful and emotional moments. And Alba finally growing into a woman acknowledging her talents and strengths is a sight worth seeing. Loved this book, it was a great relaxing reading experience.

I really liked this YA dragon adventure

The Dragon Mage Academy series is set seventeen years after the events of The Seven Kingdoms series. Rilla plays a small role. So it is better to have read that series first, but it’s not absolutely necessary. This series is about Alba, Rilla’s niece. Daughter of Lord Bluebeard. She is in danger of being married off to someone she doesn’t want to be married to. So she flees.

I really liked this YA dragon adventure. Enjoyable, entertaining, a bit slow to start, but then it was fast-paced and with twists and turns I didn’t see coming. I thought I knew whodunit it, and even though I was right about who, I was wrong about how and why and about every detail really. I like being surprised, so that was really good!

So exciting

I really liked Alba though she is stubborn lol. And Fyrian the little green dragonette turned ferocious Dragon loved her lots. I have two favorite scenes just because they made me laugh. One is where Alba is attempting to send the letter to the Witch General and Maste Fosco has to go chasing after a silver dragonette . The second is when she uses the flaming sword and stuns General Thornicroft, and burns his hair btw, and the other cadets with her power. They sure wasn't expecting that to happen. Also I was completely shocked at the culprit i thought it was someone else. All in all what a great book.

New author, great story!

Well now I'm hooked on Cordelia Castel! I could hardly put this book down what with the action, the suspense and the surprises. Princess Alba is a wonderful character, with a backbone. Fyrian, the dragonette grown up to be full dragon, is a force to reckon with. The two of them together will do great things, I'm sure. Looking forward to seeing what happens with their continued adventures in the next books. I love finding new authors who whet my imagination and create characters that I can feel and believe in. Thank you, Cordelia, for becoming one of my favorites!

I picked this series up because I love sentient dragon books. I’ve never been a fan of them just being beasts. This book portrays them as sentient with strong personalities of their own. As it should be. I’m not sure yet if I like Fyrian as she seems a bit whiny, but maybe that is because she is still what amounts to being a child. And I assume I would also be whiny if I was accused of murder! I think that Alba has a few flaws also, but she already seems to be growing into a strong MC. I did truly love how the murder was incorporated to make this not only a magical dragon book, but a mystery as well. I’m excited to see where the series goes.

Intrigue, Murder, and Friendships

This is a well written story with many nicely developed characters. If you just accept the premise that starts the tale, you'll have an enjoyable read.

Princess Alba/Cadet Albert leads us through her adventure. Early on, she bonds with a dragon which is a central theme. Their bonding is very problem and the dragon is accused of murder. Alba and her new friends set out to find the real murderer while dealing with the new military life in which they live.

This kept my interest throughout the book. Definitely worth reading.

I LOVED the Cendrilla series that reinvented our favorite fairy tales. Cordelia Castel takes us back to the worlds she cleverly crafted with a new cast of characters: some you have to love, some you love to hate. The magic im the book is super awesome. Every spell has a purpose and a reasoning. Our heroine is bound and determined to prove herself, and she makes one amazing start. I cannot wait to start book 2!

The introduction to Princess Alba is fantastic: filled with hopes and fears. Extending the tale into the generation which follows Cendrilla Perrault. While the story has some dark shadows. overall, I found it quite enjoyable. I hope that you do as well.

I received a copy of this book as a gift. This is my honest review.

I loved this book ! Princess Alba is the perfect heroine. What to do when your father is going to send you off to marry a king who doesn't want you but your aunt. This book involves a great mystery. It's just not the one everyone is trying to solve. This book is full of twists and turns and well written. I can't wait to read book 2 in this series.
