In Like Us, L comes into their own. As a queer and mentally ill person, they use micro memoir to piece together the formative experiences of their sexuality and recovery. The road is winding. Join them.
The only thing I love as much as queer representation in literature, is mental illness representation. The stories in this memoir are so honest, not holding anything back for the comfort of the reader. But it is so beautifully written and coming from such an authentic place you can’t stop reading. This is the first book I have sat down and read something all the way through in one go in some time. And it was more than deserving of that attention. Whether you can relate to their experiences or not, L allows you to live in their head a little with these memories and you’ll be a little different because of it at the end, for the better. Couldn’t recommend it more highly.
L's book is a powerful portrayal of the intersection of queerness & mental illness. Their beautiful and concise prose paints haunting and relatable images of love, friendship, and the ways mental illness weaves itself throughout all aspects of life. Read this book if you are interested in mental illness, queerness, friendship, or memoir.
This is an incredible book. It is beautifully written and truly moving while you read. It offers the reader a peek into L's mind and it is really worth it.
