This work is an analysis of the theory of learned helplessness. We all face challenges and obstacles to our progress and to the achievement of our goals. We may be stuck at one point in our journey, facing a great obstacle that we cannot move past. Yet what happens to us when the situation changes? What happens when the obstacle is lifted? Do we notice that the terrain has changed, that the opportunity exists now to advance, or do we remain stuck in the illusion that we cannot move forward? The theory of learned helplessness suggests that in many circumstances, we remain stuck, and blind to the new opportunities for progress. An awareness of the theory can give us the cognitive mind shift that will allow us to make the advance, and to take the necessary steps forward toward our goals.
