“Bear the flame in your heart. Hold in your heart a flame like the sun.”

This was a great little spin off and an easy read. Also, I would die for Kyojuro.

you guys just don’t GET it. rengoku always believed that his purpose in life was to fight in order to protect other people, that he was only strong to save the weak, and that his life was forfeit in comparison. he represented the purest hashira at heart: one who kills demons for the sake of nothing but those around him and will be determined to their very end to ensure this goal. it didn’t matter that it killed him in the end because this legacy of his lived on within tanjiro and those he inspired. he had the greatest impact out of anyone else because he represented the truest swordsman you could possibly be, and is therefore the blueprint the main characters want to strive to be. it’s because he believed in tanjiro that things went the way they did.

It's hard not to be a bit cynical about this spin-off after the main Demon Slayer came to a satisfying and planned finish. A manga with a beginning, middle and end - what a luxury, and so dang appreciated.

But who doesn't want to see a few more stories of our favourite side-characters? The first half of the book we get Giyu. The second half is everyone's favourite character Rengoku - we get to see how he becomes a Hirasha.

It's completely unnecessary. It feels a bit like those Star War movies like Solo. Fun, but very forgettable and inconsequential and in a few months from now you may forget this exists.

TW// murder (including fathers), animal murder (including dogs), suicide attempt, mentions of death (including mothers)

Ryoji Hirano was a solid choice to write this two story collection. Hirano is a talented writer who clearly spent a lot of time learning about Demon Slayer. This manga was so well written that it felt like it could’ve been written by the original Demon Slayer creator Koyoharu Gotouge.

Giyu’s story was my favorite of the two. I loved getting to see more interactions between Shinobu and Giyu. Seeing Giyu interacting with a dog was possibly my favorite part of his story. Shinobu also managed to steal every scene that she was in and she’s part of what made this story so fun to read.

Rengoku’s story wasn’t what I expected it to be, but it was somehow better than I anticipated. It deals a lot with Rengoku trying to become a hashira while Kanroji is training under him. I liked how Hirano managed to incorporate a lot of the flashback scenes from the main series into this story (like the scene where Kanroji gets her uniform and the scene where she’s rejected by a man).

I wasn’t a huge fan of the Kimetsu Between the Scenes section at the end of this manga, but I loved everything else about this manga and I think this book is a perfect read for Demon Slayer fans.

I like Giyu as a character, but his story truly gave nothing (and it wasn't really about him in the first place tbh). The story about Kyojuro was solid though. But PLEASE can I get a spin-off story about my boy, Shinazugawa Sanemi? I love him so <3

While not written by the main creator, it's still pretty solid.

First half is about Giyu and his mission to the mountains. While the story is predictable there's a lot of great moments for Giyu's growth as a character plus some vicious kills. This is a moodier story with a lot of heavy themes. The second half is Rengoku, much more uplifting and of course we get to see Rengoku before he becomes a Hirasha so that's awesome. Both pretty fun side stories worth reading if you're a fan of the series.

"We can only be Hashira…because we have someone to be strong for."

This was different then I expected!

To be honest, I don't really know what I expecting though. I really wanted to read this because RENGOKU! LOL! I can't say I had any other reason except that I wanted to see some of his backstory and I think it delivered.

I say that hesitantly because the backstory of Giyu and Rengoku were different then I think what I thought they would be. However, I think this writer did a very good job of capturing the personalities of the Hashira! Their reactions and their choices felt very spot on to me! I also thought the other Hashira were captured very well too, even though I didn't know we would be getting a little bit of some of the other Hashira, which I think was a fun surprise! There was some "banter" captured between two characters that made me smile because I forgot how much I had enjoyed it in the anime. It was nice to see that again!

I think overall Giyu's story was a lot sadder then Rengoku's when it came to the people they were interacting with. While Rengoku's was sad, I felt the first parts really pulled on my heart strings.

I think what was most surprising is how much guns were used in this story. That I can recall, there hasn't been anything with guns in the original series. (At least in the anime. I haven't read through the full manga yet.) I found that not quite as…exciting? I don't think that's the right word, but it wasn't my favorite. Though I will say that the way the guns were used in Rengoku's story was more violent then I anticipated, but was cleverly-written as a whole.

The art was amazing! I took some screenshots on my iPad of a few scenes that were very very good! I especially loved a lot of the panels with Rengoku because you could really feel his passion shining through.

Overall, this was a good read! I'm wondering if I would enjoy it more the second time then the first mainly because I know what to expect next. I would definitely be interested in seeing other Hashira stories should their be more volumes or spin-offs!

I think if you love Demon Slayer, I would recommend checking it out!

I loved seeing some of my favorite characters in a spin off manga. Tomioka being my all time favorite character in the Demon Slayer series and Rengoku who has such a soft spot in my heart. The art style was nicely done. I did appericate that. I loved both stories, they very much broaden the Demon Slayer universe.

The first half of the manga is Tomioka’s story. We are visited from Shinobu. Which I love seeing Shinobu with Tomioka (not just because I ship them) but because I love the way the two interacts. I find their dynamic really interesting. It was fun to see them on their mission together.

“𝘉𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘧𝘶𝘭, 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳.”

The second half is Rengoku’s story. The story is about him attaining the Hashira status. We see him with Mitsuri, who was his pupil. I loved seeing their friendship. They also have sweet understanding of each other.

Rengoku’s story ending was heart melting as he exited the main story too soon.

“𝘒𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨.”

I recommend this to any Demon Slayer fan. It was a quick read and it made me smile. Hopefully we will get more stories like this with other the hashrias.

4.25/5

I miss those characters so much. I would honestly read twenty volumes of them just chilling and doing nothing. I wish there were short stories for each of them like this one—especially for Iguro/Mitsuri and Tengen.

(The ending hurt just as much as it did in the main story)

This volume is two stories of the leaders of the Demon Slayers Corps - the first one about a Bear Hunt that might be a demon was good. The 2nd story was some weird demon with guns fighting the fire leader before he became the leader of the fire breathing style (the guy from the train arc). Sadly the second story was just not that good.
Then there were a bunch of shorts that were "between the scenes" bits in print for the TV anime. These were way out of context and confusing.

This volume is divided into two stories. The first story is of the Water Hashira whereas the second story revolves around the Flame Hashira. Both stories are good, but the second story of Kyojuro and Mitsuri was comparatively better.

This is such a beautifully written and designed short story about Giyu Tomioka and Shinjuro Rengoku. I loved every ounce of it!

The story of how Rengoku became the Hashira he was well known as and the emphasis on how Giyu begun to open up his heart piece by piece, elevated the impact the story had in each individual. Without it we would be left in the dark.

I lived for this. It’s amazing :) I do wish there were more key elements as to how the Hashira were fond of each other and how compatible they were as coworkers and friends. Having other short stories about all of them is something I look forward to in the future if that’s even possible. Hearing about the emotional and mental demons the characters were fighting within themselves is something I’m VERY interested in but maybe the creator left that to the imagination on purpose.

This was an awesome spinoff from the main series. It may not be from the original mangaka, but it definitely still has the essence that is Demon Slayer. The art is the highlight of this, I absolutely love the mangaka’s artstyle! Seeing more of Rengoku was my favourite (I love that owl man so much).

I would love for this to become a series where we get to see more side stories of Hashira’s or other characters in the series such as Ubuyashiki. Anything to give us some more Demon Slayer!!

I'm so happy this exists <3 Giyuu's story was nice, it's always great to get a bit more insight into him. For me, ofc, the highlight was Rengoku's story. I love him so much I cannot put it into words and this story solidified that even more. I'd die for him your honor <3

That was a pretty cool story collection that helps flesh out some stuff from before the series really gets rolling, specifically with the Hashira whom we don't meet for some time. It was nice to see them all either before they became the big scary Hashira or as they were growing in power. It fleshes their characters out just a bit more.

Was this a necessary book? Definitely not. But it's worth the read if you're a Demon Slayer fan to see what some of your faves may have been up to in the early days, and the end comics are super cute.
