Barney Rosset was born in 1922 in Chicago to a Jewish father and an Irish Catholic mother. He was briefly married to the Abstract Expressionist American painter Joan Mitchell. He bought Grove Press in 1951, and sold it to the Getty family in 1985. He died in 2012.
The cover, a striking portrait of Bobby Kennedy by Paul Davis, is matched by a powerful memoir of Kennedy written by Jack Newfield, who worked on the Senator's presidential campaign and was present at the candidate's assassination. It's a reminder of how fragile the path of history can be, since Kennedy would have likely been a strong contender against Nixon. It's also a good reminder of Evergreen's stature in its moment of time. The issue also features a long interview with William Burroughs, recently enamored of L. Ron's E-meters, and some strong, disturbing fiction from Robert Hunter and John Schulz.
