I’ve only recently been introduced to these books even though I’ve read this author before. And, I really wished I had read these sooner. I blew through the ones before this one, and I think this seventh book in the series is the best one yet. I really can’t say too much as I don’t want to ruin anything for those readers who haven’t read the series yet, but what I can say I’ve really come to love these characters. Dean, Jaz, Brynne, Gibbie, et al. are just so much fun, and I love the little adventures they go on. Each book is a standalone, but there is an overall plot to the books. This book was the end of one of those arcs, and I am hoping that there will be more in this great universe. There was a satisfying conclusion, and I’m wanting to get to know the new characters better. If you love fun, light urban fantasy, give this series a try…and if you’re already a fan, you’ll love this latest! Highly recommend! I was provided the e-book which I reviewed voluntarily.
I always thought Dean was more than a paramedic. We find out more about his past. And it’s a shock. A good one though. Dean is always true to himself and remains so. Good read I thoroughly enjoyed it.
This book was incredible! I really enjoyed it! My favorite part was when Dean and his friends fought the four horsemen! Dean's decision to just end the battle by severing the ties between good and evil was a genius move!

So I finally read all 7 of these books, and the very brief Christmas special, inside of a little less than a year. I started them while I was taking my EMT-B class last year, and I was thrilled that the material I was learning about in class was accurately reflected in how Dean Flynn went about his ambulance service. You can tell that the author truly is a paramedic in real life, and the insider details he gives are accurate.
I have since completed the class, earned my license, and gone on a few calls. Sadly, in real life patients aren't usually supernatural.
You can tell that the author tried to milk his material for all he could. The first book ends on a flat note, and you can sort of tell that book 1 and book 2 were meant to be one book that was ultimately split in half. Other books in the series are surprisingly short (the audiobooks clocking in at less than 6 hours apiece, often). And I have seen reviews on Goodreads citing to spelling/grammar mistakes that were probably invisible to me as I listened to the audiobooks.
The best book in the series was, by far, The Paramedic's Witch. I love the wackiness of time travel and interbreeding. So sue me. I'm a sucker for it every time.
This particular novel? Eh. We got some answers about the identity of Dean's father and Dean's status as possibly having some supernatural blood, previously alluded to about 4 books ago. Dean talked about his mom and how his dad wasn't there for her. Of course, we know nothing about Dean's mom (her personality, her job, what she looks like, anything) even after this novel. It was hard to be invested in Dean's outrage about the man's treatment of her when all we know about her is that she was human and left "destitute." We know nothing about Dean's grades from high school, although there are throwaway statements about how hard Dean studied. We know that he apparently got an associate's degree in paramedic science, and he appears to have skipped my EMT-B certification program altogether. We know that Dean enjoys reading folklore to study up on his supernatural patients; kind of begs the question why he doesn't enroll in a 4-year college and finally earn his bachelor's degree in something. Why not study folklore? Or double-major in folklore and nursing?
Pro tip: Nurses make a lot more money than paramedics. And they have a lot less driving to do. And while they might lift patients occasionally, they usually have more than one or two partners around to help them with that.
And for all that the "Doom" the main characters faced possibly included the end of the world? The ending still felt very trite. Too simple. Not enough obstacles.
But I'm still giving it 5 stars. I liked the gimmick of a protagonist who is a paramedic to the supernatural. I liked the idea that every kind of supernatural creature you have heard of is real in some form. I was pleased to have the diversion.
I have been a fan of this book series since I read the prequel and book 1, and after following the adventures of paramedic Dean as he cares for supernatural patients in Elk City throughout 6 books, it was only a matter of time before I completed the series.
The verdict? Read the final book if you are a real diehard fan of the series and just want one last adventure featuring Dean, Gibbie, Jaz, Brynne, James, and the others. Otherwise, since we know from a prior book Dean's teenage daughter Joanna visits him from the future, the End of the World foretold centerpiece story of the final book doesn't seem so urgent after all.
I mean, if the world really did end, then the book where Joanna shows up to help Dean save the day would have never taken place. Ergo, it was expected that this book's story has no real feeling of urgency because you already know the ending. Given the lack of complexity of the plot, it is rather strange this book despite being the finale would be so short. If you were a fast reader, you could finish it in 90 minutes. And I thought Mockingjay was a quick read!
I do like some parts of the book, and the humorous scenes starring Gibbie are great as always. Unfortunately, with such a simple plot that doesn't have much conflict, the book rehashes conflicts from a prior book where the bad guys share videos on the internet of werewolves shifting and angry mobs burning down the fairy trailer park that was supposed to be rebuilt and refurbished by James. How could it burn down so easily after he spent money to fix it?
Brynne's super vampire powers are sadly underused. I would have enjoyed it during the scene where she arrives to attend to the wounded in Asha's house, that she didn't even need Dean to tell her the number and location of the wounded because she is supposed to be able to sense everyone's heartbeats. Furthermore, she wouldn't need to worry about falling debris because she now has superstrength and could lift wooden beams with ridiculous ease. A real lost opportunity!
I did enjoy discovering a little bit about Celeste's personal love life which gives us hints as to the reason why she and James stopped being a couple. In a book so otherwise devoid of tension, maybe giving us the chance to learn more about these previously ignored side characters would have been nice. At least we finally learn how Gibbie gets his packets of donated hospital blood. And no, despite being a hero during so many books, James doesn't give him a blood dowry. No, he doesn't steal blood.
All in all, the book definitely has some fun moments and if you really loved the series and just wanted one final adventure, this book is worth it. As for casual readers, the prior books hint at most of the secrets answered in this book, so if time is a constraint, reading the finale isn't obligatory.
Oh My God is Jamie Davis’ Extreme Medical Services series totally fantastic. That includes its most recent addition, The Paramedic's Doom (book 7 in the series). Both the book and the series to date are easily worth five stars. Frankly the whole concept of a paramedic who takes care of hidden supernatural creatures in his city is wonderfully original. It’s also executed perfectly in a book and series that have just what I want, are well written, with excellent world building and great plots full of magic and adventure. The lead, Dean Flynn, is simply superb, as are Jaz, Brynne, and the rest of the cast of supporting characters. The Four Horsemen? They don’t know what they’re up against. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, with the caveat that while you could read this standalone you’re much better starting off from book 1 of the series.
Bottom line: this book is easy to highly recommend.
entertaining paranormal urban fantasy adventure series
This is an entertaining paranormal urban fantasy adventure series. A great cast of characters and an amazing storyline. Dean is a paramedic in a city in Maryland. He works in a specialized paramedic unit for a group of citizens called unusuals. Unusuals are paranormal/supernatural beings and creatures. Living among humans for millennia they live and work beside us unbeknownst to most of us. Which is vampires werewolves angels gnomes trolls fairies etc. This specialized unit goes out and assist them with medical issues. They work alongside specialized police unit as well. his patriots in the paramedic unit as well as his other friends must also fight against evil trying to disrupt the peaceful cohabitation of their city. Between groups of evil supernaturals and demons and others they must always be on the watch. Once again they are up against a battle to save their city and possibly the world. Read on and see where the adventure goes and how it ends for this book.
An angel, a hunter, and a paramedic walk into a morgue...
To best understand the ending of this epic tale of our intrepid hero Paramedic, you should already have read the 6.5 previous installments. If you haven't, then you will probably find many of the characters a bit flat and undeveloped. Fear not! The aforementioned parts of the epic will be a lot of fun to read through and you'll be properly introduced to the intriguing cast of characters in this final(?) chapter of the Extreme Paramedic. If you haven't read all the previous parts recently, then when you finish this episode, you may want to follow my lead and re-read the entire epic. Note to obsessive proofreaders: The text is not perfect, but the potholes in the way are not too deep.
Dean may think he is just another guy but clearly everyone else disagrees, and now that his father has shown up, everyone has reason to disagree. Why did Gabe think that Dean would obey him? He has been watching Dean his whole life and it is clear that Dean is very much his father's son - strong-willed, opinionated and prone to do things his way. Given a problem with only 2 apparent choices, of course Dean would find a third option! This novel put a new extreme spin on the abandoned son-new father conflict that just added to the tensions the author infused this story with. It was hard to put this one down.
While this series isn't high literature, or even particularly novel for an urban fantasy novel, the books are entertaining and just the type of fluffy fun I enjoy when tired or multitasking. Even though the main chatacter is a Gary Stu who gets to hang out with a bunch of supernatural, attractive bro women who eat a lot and kick butt in a common trope, I like that the main character's best qualities are optimism, empathy, and calm competence in stressful situations. This is feel-good, because victory is achieved through trying to do the right thing, be inclusive, and have faith in the good of others.
This is a fantastic story filled with tons of action and well developed and likable characters. The story flows at a great pace and I had a very hard time putting the book down. This is my first book from this Author and I highly recommend a proofreader. The numerous typos were very distracting for me which is why I took one star off. Other than that I Loved this book and I am excited to read more from this author and in this series!
I just finished all 7 books in a week or less and I couldn’t stop reading. These books are full of amazing characters that I came to really like and wanted to find more about. Having to care for the Unusuals as a paramedic was very interesting storyline . I don’t want to spoil the story by giving away details but I will read more of these books if they are out. Thanks for the great stories and characters.
Excellent book to end the series. Fans of Paranormal Stories should not miss the Extreme Medical Services books.
The good guys in these books may not be what you expect, but they great characters that I enjoyed reading about. They are people I enjoyed getting to know. The plots are well built and don't drag. There is !little navel gazing. The plot moves along at good pace. The bad guys are also well designed and may not show their black hats when we first met them.
Time for Dean and friends to find out, why their city is being visited by all manner of evil troubles. Enter the 4Horsemen Of the Apocalypse. This one has kept me up till 3 am. Constant action, with. Dean and his stubborn will, fighting to find a way to avoid the final battle that would end his beloved city and the people he cares about, well worth the loss of sleep.
This series of books is entertaining and grabs your attention and holds it! I believe it is for both young adult, as well as adult readers. The series takes you through the adventures of a paramedic, his co-workers and friends in a community of both humans and "unusuals". Treating medical issues, fighting battles both dangerous and strange. Good versus evil and how to overcome!
I love the characters in these books! Especially the main character, the paramedic, who learns who his father is in this book finally! He moved closer to him and Jaz having their daughter, Joanna, and both Ashley and her Eldara Sister are in this one! The city is in peril, as usual, but this time, it's the end of the world maybe also!
I have just finished all seven books in this series and thoroughly enjoyed them. Once I read book one I couldn't stop until I'd finished all seven. It was such a different storyline and included all the usual supernatural beings and, angels who all join together for the final battle with the horsemen of the apocalypse. Really good reading.
I love the fast paced action in this one and the description. I also like the arrival of a third option. Only have 2 choices isn’t always the best for everyone, but looking for something beyond what is presented and thinking outside the box is pretty awesome.
I truly enjoyed the entire series, my only complaint was the editing, the whole series needs to be reviewed for a large number of errors that distracted from the story/books. I enjoyed the and storyline and will look to read more by this author.
An end to the 7 book series. I like the way it wrapped up. The story has been tied all up, but there is still the possibility of other books going forward. Would have been better as one book to stop all the repetitive explaining of things carrying forward from book to book.
I hate writing reviews. I have followed the adventures of the supernatural paramedic. I usually don't like to get involved with a series, but this one was just easy enough to follow.
The stories are great. Adventure in EMS. I can see my brother doing this as a firefighter. I always loved the stories he and my dad told. These are better.
Excellent Series! MUST read in order for full effect
Very good storyline, characters and each one is different! You don’t expect what’s coming! Will keep on reading!!! Wish The Baxter’s played a bigger role.
The Paramedic’s Doom is the latest episode focusing on Dean Flynn and his friends, both human and supernatural. It’s a wonderful story that brings many threads together in a most satisfying way. I do wish it was longer!
I mean who doesn’t love a good fight between good and evil? Dean definitely doesn’t and does everything he can to save everyone he cares about. You have to appreciate the growth he’s shown as this series progresses.
Good story. Been a while since I read from this series, had to read something else for a bit. Enjoyed reading about Dean and his group. Not sure about the theme of the next one but I'll have to read it to find out.
This is a very enjoyable, great series. Its definitely an Unusual way of looking at the magical world. I really love the way everyone comes together as a community and the fact that goodness always wins.
I well continue this series and I do recommend it.
What a wonderful ending (perhaps, or the start of a new beginning?). Everyone wound up as the should. Loved Gibbie in full camo. Congrats on the series.
The book, like the rest of the series never let off the gas. I was still guessing at it's ending till the finish. I hope this isn't the end for our hero.
