Rhett's love for all things science fiction grew out of a Sunday morning family tradition of watching Star Trek re-runs on the cbc. His love of storytelling is the result of to many hours as a dungeon master trying to murder his players!
He lives in Pincourt Canada with his wife, daughter, and a crazy calico named Maggie.
If you like gritty, dark science fiction with deep characters you've found your author.

These rewrites are useful for my articles but they are work. As you will read, a communist with no reach or influence, objecting to a fantasy written by a US veteran and US federal agency glorifying the overthrow of the US government, has generated a bizarre level of backlash from US patriots. 🤔🤗🤗

I was able to see all the other three reviews, which stunned me. I usually can not see any on my science fiction reviews. Combined with the ID of commenters masked, I am feeling unwelcome. With the lurkers who appear to contact their friends when they see a review that they do not like, Goodreads have crossed into skeevy territory.

It seems that if you write a brutal review of a "sorry salute to the January 6, 2021 hero", being a communist is suddenly a bad thing. Who knew. 🤗 On the plus side, I am sure that my reviews are annoying to some and it is good to return the favor. I begin to think that Amazon/Goodreads might not really be a community of readers. 😀

For details, read my reviews of "Dark Horse" a good novel by Diener or Powers of the Earth (a sorry salute to the January 6, 2021 hero) and the comments from a Claes Rees, Jr/cgr710 (a self-identified NeoNazi and US patriot).

To Claes Rees, Jr/cgr710
Don't be a numpty, be a smarty. Come and join the Communist Party. 🙂

GLORY TO UKRAINE !

Andrew, Travis Corcoran/JP, Todd and Claes Rees, Jr/cgr710 should pause before trying this book. You wrote your favorable opinions of slavery and its benefits in comments to my review of Powers of the Earth. I wanted to advise you that this book does not present slavery as a good thing. It actually depicts the status as horrible, except for the slave owners. I think that this book might be too uncomfortable to you four. 😊

This series reads as very good historical fiction with fantasy elements. It also read as a well crafted fantasy novel benefiting from awesome world building in the backdrop of Rome under Commodus.

Given the reputation of Commodus, the magical elements are given as an explanation for the terror of his reign. The magic also fits the view of ancient peoples up through the classical period towards the supernatural. The intermingling of the supernatural and historical is splendid.

The characters give good insights into how Romans, both freeman and slave seemed to have perceived both their city and their gods. Again awesome work!

The patchwork of cultures in contact with or subordinated to the Roman state is handsomely showcased. The book has brutal action and so be prepared. None of it seems gratuitous and it certainly is necessary to the plot.

The magic is very interesting. I had not come across a description of culture similar to that of the main character. There were obviously many African soldiers and professional and other citizens in Rome. I just never saw it as such an essential story component in historical Roman fiction before. It was a nice change.

It was difficult to uncover free historical fiction on Amazon that was not simply a romance in quasi-historical garb. 🙂 This was a very welcome find. It is well written and seems to capture the tone of the time and place. It felt authentic to me but bear in mind that I had done most of my reading only on the development of the Roman state and its military. 😊

I am for the first time reading very little fiction, needing a break from the sad writing being flogged by Amazon. 🙂 The streaming services offer better fiction as a rule, though the fantasy often is the product of very bad writing from writers who haven't a clue. 😑 That being true, it still requires less of an investment of time to investigate a film than slog through the print seeking the serviceable.

With Goodreads/Amazon being such a toxic mess, I was happy that I discovered YouTube about three years ago now. I tried YouTube searching for science fiction commentary, as someone explained to me that the site hosted more than music and pet videos.

This was new to me and I was stunned by the amount of content, not just in science fiction but all the other special interest channels. I finally stumbled across my first book channel and it was love at first video. 😍😍

They have created these wonderful reader communities. They are readers of varied tastes and interests, thoughtful and in love with all aspects of the world of books. I recommend a visit to several book channels for any reader and have listed some channels below.

YouTube introduced me to the dedicated educational video sites through sponsor spots on some very good educational channels. There a good number of them with most hosting essayists, lectures, lecture series and documentaries. 😊

There are some awesome essayists to be found on YouTube channels or these sites. Some of my absolute favorites are Tom Nicholas, Mia Mulder, Steve Shives, Renegade Cut, Lady knight the Brave, Red Plateaus, Quinn's Ideas, Philosophy Tube, Second Thought, Sarah Z, Lindsay Ellis 😍, Then & Now, Owen Jones, Baggage Claim, Harbo Wholmes, Jessie Gender, Munecat.

Curiosity Stream/Nebula were the first that I tried at a cost of $15 USD for a yearly subscription. I think that they are all worth a look.

My YouTube picks of the moment.

Truth to Power, Red Plateaus, The Who Addicts, Baggage Claim, MANDY, Widebeam and Wellingtons, Never Back Down - Teresatesssa, Empire of Angels -Kiko10061980, Noah Samsen, Tara Mooknee, Book Odyssey.

As for Amazon, please consider treating this as a potentially hostile site.

Ominous music begins.🙂 The above shows what Amazon are and how valued a customer might be to them. Before the Amazon harassment began, which includes not just the above but other action, I was only regularly being sniped at by the NeoNazi/Libertarian/White Nationalist snowflake. 🤔

Amazon also shared message traffic between myself and an Australian friend. He was my only correspondent on this site's message sytem. About six months ago, my friend contacted me about Australian security (or posing as) attempting to interrogate him about me. He was worried for my physical safety. So in addition to the (at that point) months long constant comments from the writer of Powers demanding a response (talk about needy and entitled), Pine Gap Intelligence Center joined the circus. WTH. 🤔

Some of the channels that I have listed, none of whom are strangers to the mean comment received a flood of scary vile sexual, gender and racist comments. Some were in my name and the targets were mostly women and even a thirteen year old girl boater. Several pensioner couples received the same. One channel closed shop. 😑 Funny thing that it seems these members are afraid of men. It could be that they respect women so much. 😣

If my suggestion to treat this as a potentially hostile site is still needed, consider it given. Minimise profile information, remove lurkers (forces employees to use logged system action, including who, what and when your account draws interest) and screenshot the odd and the ugly. Hopefully you will not be targeted because of a deranged US federal employee, who might easily possess a top secret clearance (of which america have about 1.3 millions who have little oversight and are enabled by their "normal" colleagues).

I should mention the story of an FBI who pursued and brought to trial the only person who was prosecuted for the massive fraud of 2008. The person had no mortgage, was acquitted with no crime committed. His one sin was that he (a white male) had been seen in the background of a photo from Obama's North Africa trip. The victim did not know, did not meet and barely noticed the president. Apparently, that was enough for that nutcase agent to spend who knows how much resources and how much help from his sane colleagues to aid him in attempting to charge the victim with some crime. In the end with no evidence, the US Attorney still pursued this "case". I can only imagine what the judge thought about that insanity. 😑 Just something to consider. Feel free to search for the several news stories about the madness. 😐 Ominous music ends. 🙂

May we all enjoy Good Reading. 😊

I do not know what a Chad is or what the feminine form of it is. I was proud of myself when I recently discovered what shipping is and the origin of the term. 😊 I realize that I am not much of a source of good content but I do like these and hopefully, you will find some entertaining or useful.

Ends Too soon.

If you're looking for a captivating sci-fi story, this is definitely the one. You will not be disappointed. At first, I wanted to see a movie version of the books, but now, I'm not so sure. Hollywood might not put the same thought into authenticity that the author did.

The world building in this book has me intrigued.
The Roman empire is at the cusp of tumbling down, the forces within it are stiffling and struggling and .magic is at its centre despite the rotten, ignorant Roman way of life taking it all down hill.
The different pov's and changes through out force you to see the story differently and makes the characters more relatable but the top tier rulers still leave a bad taste in your mouth. It's well written and worth a read.

Action Galore

Page turner, keeps you at the edge of your seat
I didn’t stop until I finished
Vesper and Narricus belong together and are great together
Their love is strong and belief in good is stronger
Together they are the power couple to fight evil
This was such a great story I highly recommend it and I am going to get book 3 after this review is posted

Good series not for the faint hearted!

This really should be a 4 at least but an editor made a big mistake: Narcissa is not a “her”. The story line remains tight and our heroine keeps herself and her love safe.
