What makes for a wonderful life? On a crowded Christmas train from Milan to Paris, Amy, an American headed to meet her fiancé, and Martjin, a Finn headed anywhere but home, meet cute. But when their train gets delayed in an Italian Alps hill town due to a snow storm, they, along with a passel of fellow stranded passengers, find comfort and joy in a cozy inn, run by a wise Italian man who forces them to look at the holiday and each other in a whole new light.
Snow Day by Julie Lipson is a Holiday and Romance Fiction Novelette!
On a Christmas Eve train ride from Milan to Paris in the quiet car, an American named Amy who is traveling to her fiancé and his family, meets a Finn named Martjin who is traveling anywhere but to home and family for Christmas.
After a slow build-up in conversation, Amy and Martjin discover the train will be delayed overnight in a small hillside town in the Italian Alps due to a severe snowstorm.
With the ambiance of the town and the comfort and hospitality provided by an insightful Italian innkeeper and his wife, Amy and Martjin experience something unexpected together...
Snow Day is a short Holiday Fiction listen, a little over one hour in length, with stage play aspects of a full cast of nine narrators and realistic sound effects. It's not spicy but romantic in a restful, calming sort of way. It's a brief encounter, a chance meeting between two strangers with an unforeseen connection.
A perfect listen for a quick Holiday pick-me-up when you're feeling a little overwrought by all the demands of the season. Listen while you're wrapping those last-minute gifts, baking the dozens and dozens of cookies you've committed yourself to, or simply drop it all and go for a brisk walk to exit the holiday noise.
Snow Day is a quick, thoughtful, and romantic listen that I highly recommend! Merry, Merry, Y'all!
On a crowded Christmas train from Milan to Paris, Amy, an American headed to meet her fiancé, and Martjin, a Finn headed anywhere but home, meet in the quiet car, where she just wants a place to read, and he is relaxing in a window seat where he can take in the breathtakingly, beautiful view.
Their train gets delayed in an Italian Alps hill town due to a snow storm, and Amy relies on her new acquaintance, to help translate, as they search for accommodations for the night, and await on news that the tracks have been cleared.
Amy, (like many travelers in her situation) acts unreasonably, when they first get stranded, but Martjin is more laid back, and he embraces the adventure of Christmas Eve in this welcoming, small Italian town.
Although, I wasn’t rooting for romance here, I enjoyed my “armchair travel” of spending Christmas in Italy, especially because this was the first FULL PRODUCTION AUDIBLE that I have listened to.
With a full cast of 9 voices, (all with appropriate gender and accents) and SOUND EFFECTS, like those found on a train 🚂, it was a LISTENING experience that I can easily recommend!
OK….I take back the snarky remark I made a couple of days ago about Audible+…its true the lemons should come with warning signs, but I listened to two really great little Audible+ productions yesterday. The fun thing about the Audible productions are that sometimes you get an excellent combo of book and theater. There are few greater pleasures than becoming emersed in a live, onstage theater performance. Watching a theater production on YouTube just doesn’t work for me, but some of the Audible gems are the next best thing. A few months ago I listened to Feeding the Dragon and yesterday I listened to Snow Day, a cute little Christmas love story, maybe a little kitsch, but still something that I would have gladly gone to the theater to watch. I had no problem visualizing the setting and the characters.
Two strangers meet on a train to Paris on Christmas Eve. All of the passengers on the train soon find themselves stranded in a cozy village in the Italian Alps, due to a major snowstorm which has made the tracks impassable. It will be about 24 hours before the tracks are cleared and they can continue on their journey.
She is a young architect from Florida with a strange philosophy on life, traveling to meet her fiancé and his family in Paris. He is a teacher from Finland who would rather spend all of his vacations and holidays traveling, instead of with family. The circumstances have thrown them together and this brief encounter will change their outlooks and probably their lives, at least for the immediate future.
The production brings to life the trains and porters, the terrain, the townspeople, the church, a map, the owners of the pensione and their Christmas dinner. I felt like I was sitting in the theater for a private performance and I lapped it up!
This is a very small story, yet, I feel like this production, and the sensation of the theater performance will stick with me for a long time, so I'm rating this an unreserved 5 stars
This was more like a radio play performance than an audiobook. The sound effects made it a nice experience, but you don't get the internal thoughts from the characters which made it hard to connect to this romance. I liked how it all turned out, but I didn't feel any chemistry or longing between the characters which made it a little unbelievable. Maybe if it was a longer? It was really, really short. I think it was a little over an hour listened at 1.3x.
An Audible Original, this story is slightly over an hour long, with a cast of nine narrators that begins as a young woman, Amy, is leaving to go to Milan which will be followed by Paris. She is on her way to join her fiancé to celebrate Christmas with his family. He wanted her to fly to meet him, so he is even more upset when the train she is on is delayed due to snow. He insists she follow his advice, and she tries to brush off his insistence that she do as he says.
On the train she is seated near Martijn, and they strike up a conversation. She sees their views on life as very different, but when they are stranded in a small town in the Italian Alps, and their efforts to find a way to their destination is met with roadblock after roadblock. Eventually they find an inn where they are able to stay the night, their host and his wife share their story, and Amy’s perspective on this delay. She begins to see it in a different light, as more of a blessing, and realizes that the way she’s viewed life, and her hopes for her future in a different light.
Oh this was a wonderful hour long Christmas audio. A woman takes a train on Christmas Eve Day, to meet her boyfriend in Paris, after months of studying architecture in Italy. She meets an Italian man in the "quiet car" and soon an impassable snowstorm stops their train in the Italian Countryside. Our heroine has the Christmas of a lifetime, and is opened up. It was absolutely delightful. Perfect romantic holiday listen.
Thank you, Tina, for this recommendation. The true spirit of Christmas shine through in this shortie and it was the perfect way to finish my day. The full ensemble cast and production was just fantastic and definitely added to my enjoyment! 4 stars.
This was a wonderful listen, enhanced by a full cast. I immediately recognized the voice of the female lead—she's one of my favorite narrators! I want a second book.
I liked the audio production - the sound effects really added to the immersion, however it's very short meaning there's not really a lot of time to develop the characters and their relationship. If anything I thought Amy was being incredibly hasty for no obvious reason, especially in regards to her fiancé who she essentially just abandons on a whim. If we had more backstory about Scott than maybe I could have got on board with her behaviour more, however I'm still convinced she's just been scammed by some con artist called Martjin who's now going to steal all her money and leave her stranded in some random part of Europe. But maybe that's just me being cynical.
Short and cute. It brings up good questions around how we think life should be and what actually makes us happy. Wonderful characters. It made me miss traveling and adventures that much more!
4.5 Stars OMG that was really cuuutteee I really felt that I lived this amazing night with them and I fell in love with the audio <3 .. great job The story begins when Amy gets on a train and meets Martjin, but then their train gets delayed because of a snow storm so they are stranded in a small city in Italy and with that little adventure they will have a very special Christmas I was really hesitant about reading this book since I didn't hear much good things about it but I'm from the minority who actually loved the story and that audio quality is top notch .. amazing work
Cute Christmas story about two strangers who meet on a train headed to Paris on Christmas Eve. They were both headed on their own journeys to enjoy Christmas but end up spending it together after heavy snow kept them in a small town in Italy.
A wonderful friendship and connection occurs and things turn out not the wat either of them expected :)
Like many of you I’ve been absolutely dreading this dangerous heatwave that so much of the country has experienced. In an effort to escape it I have been watching Christmas Hallmark movies and reading Christmas-themed stories, pretending (and hoping) to be in the cooler months. I picked this audiobook up for the reasons mentioned above. I went in with very low expectations but ended up loving it!
The story was well constructed, well written the characters likeable and had a really strong Christmas feeling to the story. Is it a literary masterpiece? No, but it’s still a fun read and a fairly short listen. I have been very impressed with many of the Audible Originals that I’ve read and this is a testament to that.
I could totally see Hallmark making a short movie like this.
This was so cute! At the beginning, I thought our MC was kind of bitchy, but as you went along, you realized that she just had a ton of pressure and expectations put on her. Honestly, I would've loved to see a full length novel with these two!
I was poking around on audible yesterday looking for something to listen to, when I randomly came across this. The cover art pulled me in, the blurb sounded interesting enough, and the length (just over an hour) sealed the deal. Short, sweet, holiday story - what is there to lose?
I did like the story, this is just like a Hallmark movie - don't read too far into it and just enjoy it. Our two characters meet on the train heading for Milan on Christmas Eve, and end up spending more time together in a quaint Italian town after their train is delayed. I liked the characters and even though this was so short, the writing was actually pretty good.
THE AUDIO is where this shines, and the whole reason I'm writing this is because it's so unique and I want to tell people about it. This isn't read like a typical audiobook, it's more like listening to a movie. It's narrated by a full cast so you know who is speaking and each actor is wonderful! I wouldn't buy this, but if you have audible and are looking for something like this, give it a try. ❤
story 3.5 but audiobook 4 such a short and sweet and kind of dumb story if you think about it cause like why tf would you go with a stranger and all but yeah, I enjoyed it. :)
Overall 3 out of 5 stars Performance 3 out of 5 stars Story 3 out of 5 stars
Entertaining. I've decided I'm not really a fan of these full cast productions. I don't necessarily mind it for a shorter listen, but I'm not sure I'd enjoy a full length audiobook performed this way. It's not that they're bad per se, I just don't like all the background noises and sound effects, I find them distracting. But like I said, it's fine for a quickie like Snow Day, which was an okay listen- I'm pretty ambivalent about it to be honest. It was a fun premise, just didn't blow me away. But if you have an hour to spare I'd recommend giving it a listen.
Short and sweet novella! I enjoyed the message about living in the moment and not worrying so much about the destination. The full cast recording and added sound effects were a great treat, but I didn’t totally love that some of the dialogue was done so that the sound only came through from one side (for example: one character could be heard from the right side only and the other character from the left). I understand that it was to mimic a conversation, but it was a bit disorienting to listen to. Overall a quick and easy listen.
Very short listen about two strangers on a train on Christmas Eve. What happens when the tracks get snow covered and they get stranded in a small Italian village is the beginning of a good story. Story 4 stars Narration is 4 stars and features a full cast including Amanda Ronconi whom I happen to really love. Lots of sound effects as well. Fun, sweet read.
