Scarfs of every color, sweaters in intricate weaves, and knitting needles with sharp points…
With tourist season finally over, the small mountain town of Estes Park, Colorado, can breathe a collective sigh of relief and enjoy a slower, more relaxed pace. That works just fine for Winifred Page, so she can rearrange the novels that cover the shelves her bookshop. Watson, her beloved Corgi, is equally as excited about long uninterrupted naps by the fire.
Strings that Fred has been attempting to connect around her father’s murder and the Irons family infiltration into her town and her life suddenly tangle into one huge mound of brightly colored knots. It’s going to take all of her skill and strength to weave them into the truth. However, sometimes, a particularly harmless looking thread can make everything unravel…

Book 20 As usual this book in this series is Excellent. I believe everyone will enjoy every book 23 of them in series. This one is no Exception. Branson shows up again in this one. Fred's ex boyfriend. And The Irons family are finally revealed. I can't wait to read 21 to 23. I Absolutely love all the characters in this series. Especially little Watson the adorable Corgi. I truly recommend these. Faboulas! Praise for Mildred Abbott
As always, I wish to thank the author for bringing Fred, Watson, and all of the other wonderful characters that take space in your brilliant mind to let us escape reality with murder, mystery, and mayhem for some time each day! I think this one was the best yet but I probably will say that at the end of the next book in this series.
Man Mildred kills of some major characters. In this book all is revealed about the IRONS Family. It’s a doozy of a reveal to see all who is involved and the fallout. Unfortunately Branson comes back into the picture with his unhinged self, Fred’ family is in the thick of it all,
OMG! The best of the series to date! 😍 It took me hours to read this (because no one would let me read) but once I started I wasn't disappointed. I was emotionally involved in every page and it honestly kills me that I have to wait 3 months before I get the next book😩. To say I'm addicted to this series is being very nice.😉
Wretched Wool is book #20 in the Cozy Corgi Mystery series by Mildred Abbott.
Detective Susan Green has become one of my favorite characters in this series, with her love of a good Hallmark Movie romance to reading detective stories, and so on, but especially her growing fondness and relationship with my absolute favorite character, our main little grumpy man, Watson, our adorable corgi mascot. And I just love all the other little dogs in this episode. Please note, before December 10, 2020, I read my books on a Kindle Paperwhite. At the beginning of December, I bought myself an early Christmas gift: A Kindle Fire 8 Tablet. This little wonder has all the book covers in full living color and I absolutely LOVE staring at all the beautiful and colorful book covers. The manga Harlequin comics I buy are absolutely ravishing with their colorful covers. Anyway, back to Watson and the gang.
Several people were murdered that I wasn't expecting to be killed off: some justifiably, and others, in my opinion, unjustifiably. The Irons family once again makes an appearance and we find out about several people who are part of the Irons family. We also find out who the start of the Irons family was, and why it was called IRONS. There are still a few people who are bad guys, that some people may feel sorry for. Be sure to read ALL of the other books in this series, Books 1-19 BEFORE reading this one, or you will definitely miss some important information.
I absolutely love the romance and love between many of the main couples in this series: Leo Lopez and Winifred (Fred) Page being the number one romance; Katie Pizzolatto, our lovely bakery owner, and her new boyfriend, Joe, who owns the shop a couple of doors down from The Cozy Corgi Bookstore; Fred's mom (Pearl) and stepfather (Barry); and, of course, Watson (our corgi man) and all of his loves - Barry, Leo, and Ben (one of the twin Native Americans), who works with Fred in the bookshop. However, even though Watson shows his love to these three guys, his main love and concern is for his momma, Fred. In this episode, he is also showing a lot of admiration for Detective Susan.
There is a recipe in the back of this book for Chocolate Chip cookies. If you are on a low-carb, sugar-free diet, just substitute erythritol, Splenda, or sucralose for all of the sugar items. Substitute maple syrup for the brown sugar. Substitute a mixture of almond and coconut flour for the all-purpose flour.
I gave this book a 5 star rating, just like with every other book in this series. I can hardly wait for the next book that is supposed to arrive in my Fire Tablet in March 2021.
When I read the first COZY CORGI mystery, CRUEL CANDY I knew I found the perfect fictional family to drop in on and re-connect with, as I read every new story. Through each book, as it digs deeper into the town of Estes Park, the characters’ pasts, and struggles, it is easy to fall in love with their whimsical banter and fondness for fabulous sounding baked goods. The heroine Winifred (Fred) and of course her grumpy and treat loving Corgi, named Watson, connected with strong ticks in all the Reader boxes. A divorced woman with a love of earthy colored broomstick skirts and cowboy boots, despite the weather. Fred is living her perfect life. Opening a charming bookstore in the small tourist-filled mountain town, it offers delectable pastries in the Café and acts as a hub for the locals. Fred has a devotion to her mother and unusual step family. Her personality is strong and curious, a throwback to her deceased detective father. Fred has an unusual ability to find a dead body, sometimes before her numerous dirty chai coffees have kicked in. Over the stories she has become friendly-ish with Susan the one female police officer, Leo the Park Ranger, and her best friend and business partner Katie, the Cozy Corgi Book Store’s baker. Nearly fond enough of Fred, her friends and family, to send birthday and Christmas cards, I am, however. content to simply buy the books. WRETCHED WOOL is actually Book 20!!! and is a masterpiece of Mildred Abbot’s skillful writing and her careful and thorough thought process. I am a fairly fast reader, but WRETCHED WOOL had me hanging on to every paragraph, occasionally holding my breath and even screaming out loud in unison with Fred and Watson. This is simply a masterpiece of colors, crunchy snow, and ideas so far-fetched that they might be true. If you are new to the COZY CORGI mysteries, reading this as a ‘first” will find you reaching for the entire series and relishing every book. As well as a delicious recipe which accompanies each book with Fred’s and Watson’s endorsement.
So much happens in this book that it's a must read for fans of the series. Frankly, if you're new to the series, I wouldn't start here. While Abbott does a good job of filling in the gaps, so much has happened with Fred, Watson, and family since Book One that I can't imagine appreciating these momentous events without having read at least a few of the earlier books. And, trust me, diving in at the beginning is no hardship. I do have a couple of minor quibbles. First, a different cookie recipe would have been welcome. A few of us aren't chocolate fans. Second, this is the first book in the series where editorial issues have been frequent enough to annoy me. I found many subject-verb disagreements, some sentences that weren't cleaned up properly after being revised, and a couple of places where the wrong form of a word was used. Even so, Abbott does a better job of proofreading and copy editing than most ebook publishers.
I don't know how this author can keep cranking out these books so rapidly, but I'm glad she does. I am beginning to feel as though I'm right beside the main character. Her emotions become my emotions, which is why I simply can't stop reading. Wretched Wool is one of the best in the series, perhaps because it does tie up some loose ends that have been untied throughout, although not completely. There are still questions that need to be answered. A good mystery (this one has a few more murders than usual), with interesting and somewhat quirky characters featuring a book-store owner who can't stay away from solving murders (I find myself saying, "no, don't do that!" a lot) and her trusty, albeit grumpy, corgi. A fun escape that takes place in Estes Park, CO. (And, because there's a bakery on the floor above the Cozy Corgi bookstore, you can almost smell those delightful treats as they come out of the oven; there's even a bonus recipe!)
Love this series and really loved this book, the suspense builds from the very first page and keep going to a dramatic conclusion you will not see coming! Characters are well written and believable, love Fred, Kate, Joe and especially Leo - actually love all of them and their little quirks but they are people I would love to just hang out with and be friends. Everything you learned in reading the series builds to an explosive end in this book and everything revealed just blows you away, not at all what you're expecting and yet there's a cliffhanger there at the very end. I highly recommend both the book and the series, you will definitely fall in love with Watson the corgi, I know I did.
This series is one of my favorite cozy series. If you haven't read any of this series, I highly recommend that you read the series in order. While many of the books would be good as stand-alone books, this one particularly is much better if you have the background story. They're all good books, each with its own mystery. The characters are interesting. The various dog personalities are delightful. If you like cozy mysteries, I believe you will like these books. If you like dogs enough to recognize their distinct personalities, that is an added bonus in these books.
Wow! Absolutely my favorite book of this series hands down. My head was spinning more than Fred’s and the surprises kept coming! I love the way the author has woven the continuing mystery throughout this series with little reveals and twists along the way. And this one has possibly the most shocking secrets of all! It’s very clever and pulls you into the characters and town until you’re fully invested. This series is definitely a guilty pleasure I don’t mind sharing with all of my friends. I’m always excitedly waiting for my next book to devour my favorite Scooby Gang’s next adventure!
The Irons family has been under investigation by the FBI, local police and Fred for years. The murder of her father years ago has haunted Fred and each time there is a murder in Estes Park she seems to get closer to the answers she has looked for around every corner. This book is probably the least light hearted of the series, but it was so well written I felt I was part of Fred's family: angry, confused and not a little betrayed. (Who'd have thought someone so nice could do such evil)? Sigh, three months until book 21 comes out.........
Another amazing mystery!❤️. This one was the best getting closer to getting more of the Irons family out! Fred finding out the truth of how long her mom had known about the fear she had for Fred with all the information she knew about with the Irons family along with Barry and Percival! Having your businesses bugged and your homes! The best part I loved was when Fred broke Branson's nose! He deserved that from what all he has put Fred through! This one definitely kept me on the edge of my seat! Angus definitely got what he deserved also!
I just love this series! Always keeps me interested and trying to figure out who's going to die next. I am sorry to see Angus leave us though because he was so interesting and must have been fun to write into the story. I would have loved to see his creations in person! Can't wait for the next book to see where the Scooby Gang goes next. Thank you for writing such enjoyable stories!
I really enjoy reading Cozy Corgi books in between books of weightier matter. They are refreshing and fun, and I've enjoyed following the characters through 20 books. The mysteries are clever enough that I can't predict the ending, and well written enough that I enjoy the process of getting there. They aren't changing the world, but they are helping me relax and smile so I can go back into the struggle with more energy.
All those who enjoyed the early days of Fred and Branson will see an altogether different side of Branson in this latest book in the series. Wretched wool focuses on revealing more Irons family secrets and a certain talented knitter. Not so much what he creates as much as he schemes. Watson and Fred continue to sniff out clues surrounding the intrigues in Estes, always seeming to put their lives in peril without batting an eye.
Wow! If you have been reading this series all along, you will get answers to some of your most burning questions...and so will Fred, Leo, Watson, and her Scooby Gang and family. Some people reveal themselves --to not be who Fred thought they were. A surprise or two, lots of action, some mysteries solved....and you will love it!
This is the best book in the Cozy Corgi Mysteries series. I didn’t want to put it down. There is so much going on in this story line I Just wanted to keep reading to find out who all the Irons family was and who they were threatening. What about Branson, is he going to disappear or is he going to be watching from afar? Hurry with the next book! Jo
I loved all the books, but especially this book. I love the bookstore and bakery. I wish I could have time to spend in both. I am glad the Irons family has been brought down. I love all the people and am glad I could read about them.
I have finished all 20 books and have loved them. They are quick fun mysteries with characters anyone can relate to in a beautiful place like Estes Park. Waiting for the next one.
Fred and Watson are a dynamic duo heading the Scooby gang to solve murder mysteries in Estes Park. I love the storyline and the entertaining cast of characters.
So many questions posed and so many of the questions raised in previous volumes finally answered!! Just when I would think the book was ending I would check what percentage was left and be shocked each time!
This story ties up the big mystery that has been running through the entire series. But, don't worry. I'm sure that Fred and company will still manage to find other mysteries to solve.
Another wonderful page Turner Who wouldn’t get involved with Fred and Watson’s life after reading book 20. I have read all 20 of the series and recommend them to family and friends.
Shape filled , breathtaking, surprise filled MUST READ.
If you enjoy your cozy to be fun, clean, exciting and unpredictable this is the book for you. If you love dogs with unusual natures PLEASE READ THIS BOOK.
This book is an excellent addition to the Cozy Corgi mystery series. It has all kinds of post twists and turns, and keeps you glued to your seat. I look forward to the next book in the series. I highly recommend this book and the whole series!
So much happens in this one, I can't wait to see what happens in the next. Does Branson show up again? Do more Iron members get found out? I need to know these things.
Perfect, loved it, would be okay (but sad) if this was the last book of the series. I loved the continuation from the last book and how the story unfolded. If there are more in the series, I will happily read them. Love this series.
