There are quite a few good vitamin D books out there and this is definitely one of them. The message in each of them is simple. Getting regular sun exposure on as much of your body as you can, without ever burning, is a great idea and if needed this should then also be boosted with D3 supplements to get your vitamin D levels optimised.
The book is a bit repetitive but overall is easy to read. It contains specific dosage advice for D3 raising and maintenance D3 levels. Doses of 400 IU are inadequate and some people do best on 5000 - 10 000 IU a day and this is a safe amount to take. How much you take should be guided always by vitamin D tests. The optimal range on vitamin D testing is 60-80 ng/ml.
Vitamin D tests can be posted to you and returned for analysis by post. It's so easy.
Low vitamin D levels are very common in the general population. It is estimated that there are more people deficient in vitamin D than there are people with normal vitamin D levels. Vitamin D strengthens bones and the immune system , supports the pancreas, promotes well-being, improves digestion, is responsible for the regulation of over 2,000 genes in your body and improves resistance to secondary diseases. It is a hormone as well as a vitamin.
I did have a few quibbles with this book. I have read so many solid explanations from orthomolecular experts on why vitamin D2 supplements should be avoided and why they are not as safe or effective as vitamin D3. It was surprising to see that this book supported the use of D2. I also don't support the continued highlighting of calcium supplements when actually many orthomolecular experts lately are saying that due to the constant hype about calcium supplements and the need for high doses of them, many people are actually taking far too much calcium and not enough magnesium.
I also think this book would be better if it talked more about the need to balance vitamin A, vitamin D, and also vitamin K. Without vitamin D, vitamin A can become ineffective or toxic, and without vitamin A, vitamin D can become ineffective. It is also essential to take adequate magnesium when taking vitamin D. This is why so many good health books, such as those by Dr Sherry Rogers, recommend getting at least part of your vitamin D from cod liver oil as CLO also contains vitamin A and K. Fermented cod liver oil is a far less processed product than standard cod liver oil and is the best form of this supplement. It's such good stuff. Dosage is usually ½ to 1½ teaspoons daily of fermented cod liver oil, or 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of high vitamin cod liver oil – making sure that the level of vitamin D is appropriate for you and that your vitamin A intake from all sources doesn’t exceed 30 000 IU daily.
Probably my biggestissue with this book, and all the vitamin D books I have read is their huge overstating of the impact of low vitamin D levels in causing just about everything. Just like all the magnesium books claim taking magnesium fixes just about everything, and all the books on liver health claim that good liver health fixes everything. It is such an arrogant view and just silly. There is no one magic vitamin or nutrient. They all work together! If you are very deficient in any one thing it'll cause ill health.
Vitamin D is wonderful and I really felt the difference in my severe neurological disease in taking my levels from around 10 ng/ml to 50 ng/ml or so. I wish I'd done it sooner. But no way this is the whole solution, it is only one part of it and of several dozen equally important things. Equally as important as vitamin D are the B vitamins, vitamin C (at a bowel tolerance dose), vitamin E, magnesium, vitamin A, healing the gut, and so much more.
Getting your vitamin D level up to an optimum level is a great idea and essential if you are seriously ill and trying to heal but it is not a magic bullet, and you'll get the best results when this is done as part of a comprehensive and balanced nutritional program.
If money is tight you can look up the vitamin D information from this author online for free and spend your money on a D test or some D3 instead, and soak up lots of free sun as well.

Holick's book is both thorough and written in a very accessible style on why Vitamin D is so critical to health and wellbeing. As a result, I will ease up on my sun shunning ways a bit and supplement with 2000 IU of Vitamin D3 from now on. I was very surprised to learn that the upper limit for supplementary Vitamin D toxicity is much higher than I would have expected (10,000 IU, taken over a very long period of time - months, if not years). And of course, you can't overdose on Vitamin D from the sun - but you need to be smart and not let yourself burn in the process. Highly recommended for anyone interested in learning the benefits of Vitamin D to their health.
Get this book. If you want to discover the missing link to achieving optimal health, then get this book. The best part of all is that the missing link is free - provided to all of us by the Creator Himself. Backed by a lifetime of study, research, and practical application, Dr. Holick offers a compelling method that will inspire you to take control of your own health in just 15 minutes a day.
This is the *Go To* book on Vitamin D(which, by the way, is a hormone not a vitamin--who knew?). Anything and everything you ever wanted to know is in this book! At this point in my life (I'm 42) I'm thinking more about health, nutrition and aging.(Sigh) This book is one of the more suprising books on health that I've read. After hearing for years that the sun is bad for you and causes skin cancer, someone is finally bringing something new to the table. Getting sensible sun exposure is vital to our health(Hah! I knew this all along.) According to Michael Hollick, sun exposure is the best way to get vitamin D and is superior to other sources. I personally learned that my son's seizure medications can reduce his vitamin D by 25 percent. I had no idea. This was startling to me. I plan to research this further but I've already started to make sure he gets more sun. Of course, like anything, moderation is best. If you layout and get burned to a crisp you will do more damage than good. Burning, according to Holick, is the cause of skin cancer. Interesting--definatly something to think about. Personally, I have always felt better after getting sun and after reading this book, I have a good idea why. This book has definitly made a change in my life. I make sure to get plenty of sun but not to much. (Hick provides guidelines on how much sun you need according to several factors.)This book is well writen, easy to understand and a must read for anyone interested in improving their health.
I liked the message of this book - to get outside and into the sunlight more often - but the writing was a bit dull. For better or worse, endless recitals of statistics just don't hold my interest. After dutifully reading the introduction and first three chapters, I skipped ahead and read only the chapters that interested me (i.e., chapters 6, 8 and 10).
This is a really interesting book about the many, and I mean MANY, health benefits you can get from sunlight. Most of theese are overlooked by the medicine industry, even when they carry a strong scientific hold. Michael F. Holick does a good jobb with pointing the reader to the many scientific evidences where your health clearly depends in getting enough sunlight, and especially "vitamin D-light" (UVB). Holick could have written more about the circadian rhytm and the importance of morning sunlight/sunrise, but the breakthroughs in this research hasn't found place until the recent years, after the release of this book. When Hollicks gives dietary advices he is unfortunatley wrong and stands mostly for the standard American dietary guidelines, but he confesses that he is not an expert in that field and it's not the main theme of the book. Overall this is a must read book for everyone who are interested in a healthy lifestyle, and the suns contribution to that.
Although this is written as a medical book, it is written so that the average intelligent person could read and understand it.
I have read and/or at least looked at like 200 books on alternative medicine in the past 20 years. And of all the books on alternative medicine that I have looked at, I think this is one of the 2 best.
I think like 50% of the health problems in this country would be solved if only people in this country were aware of the information in this book.
Another good reason to get outside is to increase your vitamin D level. The exhaustive data in this book led me to be taking 2,000 IU of D daily, after a blood test one month ago resulted in my doctor diagnosing me with a deficiency. This topic is big in the medical and health field right now. Holick is the lead proponent of the need for supplementation for those of us living in the northern hemisphere. He also has some very interesting takes on the current "demonization" of exposing one's skin to sunlight, which he claims is one factor in the rising rates of inadequate or deficient levels of vitamin D. It is also enlightening to see how difficult it really is to raise one's vitamin D level through diet alone, although it can be done by eating wild ( not farm-raised) salmon, and drinking multiple glasses of fortified mild or eating more than a quart of yogurt a day.I also learned that while it is really bad to get sunburn, it is really useful to be out in the sun enough to develop a tan, although certain skin types have to be careful in how they build up to tanned skin.
It is an extraordinarily good book. I think everyone should read it. There is a lot of science in the book. It is explained quite well for a lay reader.
The author is in the fore front of Vitamin D research. He is also a medical doctor. He sees patients on a regular basis. It gives him an advantage. Some of the scientific work he does translates itself to medicine. It gives him a perspective that most people do not have.
He does not make statements. He gives the science behind each idea, and explains why he thinks Vitamin D could possibly help. It takes a lot of time to read this book, but the wealth of information, the explanation of difficult concepts make this book an important one.
This is commonsense medicine. Instead of pills and drugs, I think good health can be maintained by remaining attuned to your bodies, good nutrition and exercise. This is the take home message from the book.
Questions I had about symptoms my doctor couldn't explain were answered in this book. This was an eye opener. For me it's not enough to know that I need more Vitamin D. This book answers why Vitamin D is vital, how Vitamin D is produced and how it benefits health. I was intrigued by well written explanations in this book.
it is an important book for every person. The writer, Dr. Holick, is an example of a scientist who devotes his time for the sake of science! I meet him in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 2008 or 2009, and since then I did my best to raise the awareness about Vitamin D in my family. In this book Holick used his long years of experience to present the perfect vitamin solution to every body. The book is convincing and full of evidences, and the best thing was the way that it present the information! The book is talking to MDs, and people from all walks of life using a language that suit them equally. The fact that Vitamin D is linked to Cancers, CVD, depression, stress and so on was surprising.
One of the life-changing and essential-for-health books for me. Growing up, I probably was vitamin D deficient but didn’t know. I perceived clear physical and mental health improvements by taking 2,000UI of vitamin D supplement a day when a doctor diagnosed me with vitamin D deficiency.
This book does an amazing job of explaining what vitamin D is and why we need to sunbathe or consume supplement. Our diet just can’t provide enough vitamin D.
Most important takeaways for me: take 2,000IU of vitamin D & 1,000mg of calcium every day (for a female of my age and my weight).
Will prevent a bunch of bone, heart, mental health diseases, as well as weight-related issues. Having enough calcium and vitamin D is so essential!
When I found out that I had a severe vitamin D deficiency my doctor prescribed 50,00 IU's a week of vitamin D3 for 15 weeks. I started the supplements and I started looking for answers... this book is a great resource. It has been several months since I started treatments and my levels are slowly but surely increasing. It saddens me to think that there are so many of us that suffer daily with symptoms that can easily be cured by taking a pill once a week or once daily. I tell anyone who will listen to get their levels check. I am hopeful that I will feel tremendously better once my levels are evened out!
Enjoyed reading Michael F. Holick's book on vitamin D. He shows how people who live closer to the equator have lower levels of certain diseases which he feels is a result of higher levels of vitamin D. There are studies that show when women are diagnosed with breast cancer and are vitamin D deficient they are 75% more likely to die from the disease. Vitamin D helps your body to absorb calcium helping to prevent osteoporosis. There are numerous effects of vitamin D on the body and areas it affects. (ex. mood, sleep, SAD, PMS, etc.) While the us recommended levels of vitamin D are 30-100 he recommends above 40.
This guy has been studying Vitamin D for the last 40 years, a top scientist in the field and has done numerous published, peer reviewed studies. If you read this book, you will probably know more about the health benefits of Vitamin D than your doctor, but more importantly you will know how to protect yourself from the most common health problems, including certain cancers. He backs up common sense sun exposure with loads of studies. I've read 3 books on Vitamin D, but this one is by far the best.
This is a must read! Great information on how we are skimping out on sunshine and vitamin D due to misinformation from the media. Improving our intake is one of the most simple and important things we can do for our health. Outstanding research, studies, and statistics. A must read for anyone interested in preventative, safe, and natural remedies to the most common health problems!
This is a brilliant book that highlights the epidemic of vitamin D deficiency in the US and elsewhere. It provides logical, sensible information about the advantages sun exposure and that is backed by hundreds of scientific studies.
This book will shatter many of the myths that heliophobes have been spreading for decades. If you care about your health, you will read this book!
I can't recommend this book highly enough!!!!!!!!!! Particularly if you are related to me!!! This book opened my eyes to a lot of health problems, convinced me to talk with my doctor and really push him to figure this out. My health is improving in so many ways already!!!!! PLEASE READ!!!!!
A must read for anyone who is constantly sore or tired or from the northern US for that matter. A little sun and a few vitamins can improve your life and keep you healthy. Good, easy, inexpensive news!
A great compilation of lots of research results about our understanding of vitamin D, the roles it plays in our health and why we should be concerned about deficiencies. Pretty convincing! This is a NEED to know topic.
Very, very informative. I bought this after learning I had a vit D deficiency like so many others in the US. This book really explained why I should care...everyone should be tested and get on replacements if they are low.
This book expanded my knowledge of Vitamin D and the question of how much sun one should be exposed to. It identifies which test to see if you are getting enough vit. D. The three ways to get this vitamin is thru sun light, diet and supplements.
I couldn't put this book down. So much good scientific research to back it up. I highly recommend everyone reading this book. I've seen how increasing my own Vitamin D has improved my skin in a few months. I'm excited to see if increasing my sons Vitamin D will reduce his asthma symptoms.
Super informative and uses scientific research to explain. I learned a lot about the importance of vitamin D in all areas of the body and in implementing the doctor’s suggestions I’ve definitely seen improvements in my health and well-being. Definitely worth reading!
Something everyone must read and follow to ensure good immunity and good health. Surprising undiscovered nuggets I didnot know. Started taking D3 supplements as suggested. Would make morwe sense to follow as the pandemics are likely to increase.
This book was good, but I didnt like the author's writing style very much. He came off as being a little fake to me. Maybe because he was writing to a mass audience.
Dr Hollick is the worlds leading expert on vitamin D. This book is concise explanation of his research into it's action, roles in the body and implications for health.
