The Perimenopause Solution

Rate this book
You are not going mad - it's your hormones!

The perimenopause (the time leading up to the menopause) is often misunderstood. For some women, it lasts a few months; for others it consumes the best part of a decade. This transitional period can be a time of emotional turmoil, shifting priorities and physical from hot flushes, insomnia, low mood and anxiety, to itchy skin, thinning hair, weight gain and loss of libido . . . to name just a few! Millions of women in their thirties and forties go through this without even realising they are perimenopausal. It's time they take back control.

In The Perimenopause Solution, Dr Shahzadi Harper, a medical doctor specialising in women's health and Emma Bardwell, a registered nutritionist, provide a blueprint to help women find a new balance in this important phase of their lives, so they can be prepared, not scared. Akin to getting two expert consultations in one, this holistic and accessible guide combines practical, no-nonsense information on the physical and mental changes to expect, with powerful advice on managing symptoms and nutrition, as what you eat during the perimenopause can dramatically affect your experience of it.

Expert-led and forward-thinking in its approach, The Perimenopause Solution will not just help you survive the journey towards the menopause - it will let you thrive.

I am glad this issue is coming to the fore and this book is helpful about some ways of looking after your health and things to look out for. I'm thinking about my diet and exercise more and have made some investments in skin cream! I wish it had gone into more detail in some areas (eg could you keep taking the contraceptive pill rather than go for HRT? How do they differ?). I think in its efforts to be as open and easy to understand for as many readers as possible, it skimped on some in-depth medical detail which I would have appreciated. I would say this is a good introduction to the topic and is a book you can come back to.

There's a lot I liked about this book & I feel like it is much needed as there is not a lot currently available on this topic. The nuanced and inclusive overall approach was helpful & I learnt a lot.

One aspect I didn't understand was why there was no discussion on the option or pros and cons of using the contraceptive pill to treat the perimenopause or menopause. It seems like a big omission from a book about empowering and educating women on all the options available to them.

It just felt to me, that by omitting this information, that the authors aren't giving readers all the options to make an informed choice & this also meant not including women who've chosen this option in the book. If the pill was the right avenue for a woman health wise, then an additional benefit is that the pill is free on the NHS whereas HRT isn't. The no cost could be an additional benefit for women on low income which is often a barrier to treatment as mentioned elsewhere in the book. Also the mini pill or pill will often be available to younger women experiencing symptoms making treatment again more accessible.

“You are not going mad - it's your hormones!”

After experiencing some very significant symptoms I thought it was about time I started researching the ‘joys’ pf perimenopause. I went into this book not knowing what to expect and hoping it wasn’t all mindfulness bollocks.

Luckily this was informative, well laid out and easy to follow. I did something I wouldn’t normally do with a book – I highlighted and underlined text and made notes in the margins! This is a roadmap to perimenopause and designed to be referred to as and when needed and I’m sure I will refer to this often.

I agreed with another reviewer that more information on the use of the contraceptive pill as a treatment, and the pros and cons of using this alongside HRT, would have been helpful.

This book was quite eye opening, there were things that I thought I knew about perimenopause and now there are things that I actually know to be true. The book was broken down into nice chapters about individual issues that may arise in perimenopause and then gave ideas and tips on how to live easier with these issues.

TW: They talk quite a bit about weight and specifically use the word obesity regularly, although towards the end of the book they do mention the HAES (Health at every size) organization.

Every woman should read this book! The last year and a half has been such a struggle for me as my body and mind started spinning out of control. This was so informative but so accessible. They emphasize that every woman is different and just explain why things happen. Then they give a variety of tools to help and remind us all to listen, talk to a doctor, love ourselves and be patient as we make changes. Such an empowering book.

Definitely worth a read. I’ve read several books on this topic and this is less detailed than others but still useful.
