Rate this book
With its extensive and often turbulent history, Florida is a fitting home to some restless spirits. Author Joyce Moore has traveled around the state and gathered stories about strange happenings and ghostly presences. Not only historic homes, but also theatres, parks, and cultural centers are the focus of some hauntings. You will find each sites history and character; its "haunt history," which includes interviews with owners and caretakers; and nearby attractions and facilities for those brave enough to explore these supernatural occurrences more closely.

This book is written, exactly as the title suggests, as a tour guide to Florida's haunted locations. The author has taken the time to visit the sites she writes about and has an enthusiasm that shines through in her writing. She has even managed to catch an unusual image in one of her pictures that may well represent one of the ghostly subjects of this book. This is also a very well organized book with each chapter beginning with a basic history of the location in question followed by a history of the haunt and then a small section about other things to do while in the neighborhood. This last section more often than not deals with places to eat along with the specialty of the house. One often works up an appetite while chasing ghosts so this section is particularly appreciated. The most notable and praiseworthy thing about this book though is that each chapter contains accounts from people who have had first hand experiences with the ghost or ghosts who are haunting the location being discussed. This fact alone lends a great deal of credibility to this book.

This book was published 17 years ago, but was still a very entertaining read. Although I a sure some of the local restaurants and prices of admission has changed, the locations are still there. I have been to the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine (pg 42), climbed up Waldo's Mountain in Vero Beach (pg 75) when I was 9 or 10 years old, visited the Ashley Restaurant in Rockledge (pg 78) a few years ago (but didn't feel any presences), and have been to Gainesville, Florida but only drove past the location of the Devil's Millhopper (pg 57). I hope to visit the Coral Castle in Homestead (pg 133). The Pineapple Press, Inc. publishes some really great books about Florida.

I really liked this book, and heard of a few new "haunted" places to visit while in the Sunshine State. If you like haunted places and are wanting to visit a few in Florida, this is a good book to start with
