This play was utterly bizarre. I have no words. Like I can't even begin to describe what the hell was going on here. I mean the whole thing that starts the plot is that Mariken has to go to the market which is a couple of hours away from her house and if she is there till too late she has to sleep over at her aunts place but her aunt throws her out, because she thinks Mariken is a whore and that she's involved in devilish practises.
Instead of just trying to find a safe place to sleep, Mariken just finds the nearest bush and straight up says that she doesn't care who comes even if it's the DEVIL. Like for someone who is supposed to believe in god very heavily, she gives up on her religion very easily.
Not to mention that in the last half of the play the demon Moenen, that she's been with for the entire play, decides to throw her of off a tower in order to break her neck and she breaks all of her bones, but is still alive cos she believes in god again and is forgiven. Like idk, but the medieval times were wilding when it comes down to literature. Absolute insanity.
