You know what they say...when it rains, it pours. But in Friendship Harbor, Maine, when it snows, it blizzards, and when there’s a white-out, anything can happen… even murder.
Sophie is thrilled her life is going so well. Her pub is (mostly) financially secure. She’s dating her hunky pub manager. Her best friend, Oliver, is visiting from California and she’s rented out her macabre guesthouse to a group of skiers on holiday. She’s even handling the cold weather with aplomb.
That is, until they are hit by an unexpectedly bad Nor’ Easter. Three feet of snow overnight is no joke. Now, the skiers, along with most of her staff, are stuck at Steamys pub. Sophie is creative, so she’s confident she can make the most of a bad situation. Charades, anyone? Then one of the skiers is found dead, frozen outside her llama, Jack’s, barn.
Accidents happen, right? Except this doesn’t exactly look like an accident. And now everyone trapped at Steamy’s could be a suspect. Or the next victim...
USA Today and New York Times Bestselling author Erin McCarthy sold her first book in 2002 and has since written over a hundred novels and novellas in teen fiction, new adult, and adult romance. Erin has a special weakness for high-heeled boots, beaches and martinis. She lives in Ohio with her family, two grumpy cats and a socially awkward dog.
When a skier is found dead, ex-actress Sophie LaFleur investigates.
An engaging, entertaining plot with colorful characters and an ornery llama. Sophie, the protagonist, is likable as well as bright. The small town Maine setting is charming.
I absolutely loved this penultimate addition to the Friendship Harbor Mysteries and am so sad that there's only one more book to go! How am I supposed to go on without Sophie and Jack?!
Sophie has some really awful California "friends" in town. Even Oliver is being a douche, which is not that much of a surprise as he hasn't always been the nicest. Especially to Sophie's Friendship Harbor BFF, Brandi. Seriously, dude, you can have more than one best friend! It's not Soph's fault that you live in LA and are pretty dang shallow.
Ahem...
Madilyn is probably the most fake freakin' character that I've had the displeasure to read about. Rage, eh, he was pretty decent, but Brett made me want to knock him over the head with an empty bottle of booze, and Sienna...she was just such a wench. I actually hope that Lillian sticks around in Friendship Harbor because she ended up being a decent person after all. Henry, well, he made me want to take a shower with lava soap and a wire brush, my skin felt like it had ants crawling all over it thanks to that creepy jerk.
Jack remains my favorite character. Seriously, I need to go to the llama farm that's about four minutes down the road and ask if I can pet one. Maybe read him or her a book or ten...I can't help it! Animals are my favorite part of most cozy romances!
Ok I am officially obsessed with this series and I need the sequel now!!
This book felt a bit different from the others. The main characters, the victim and all the suspects are snowed in the pub together, and I surely love an isolated murder mystery. The story then proceeded very slowly, and this really was matching the situation of the characters.
The mystery was quite easy to solve, especially when one of the characters acts super weird all the time. Definitely a bit more subtlety was needed.
Regardless, the story was fun enough to keep me hooked, and I just love the setting and the characters, and I am so impatient for the next instalment to come out.
A bit of a difference in this story from the other books. Jack isn't as big a part in this one as he has been in the past, but it is an enjoyable read. Sophie has a group of friends from her Los Angeles days that come to visit, ultimately she just wants them to go home, she has grown and developed into a better person, whereas this group has not. When time for them to leave a blizzard hits her little Maine town and she is stuck with them and a couple of mysteries included. Enjoyable trapped in seclusion murder mystery.
