Two incredible books in one. Haunted Key West tells tales from ten of Key Wests favorite hauntings including the ghost of Ernest Hemingway, the lady in blue and the ghost of US. Strange Key West takes you beyond the supernatural with amazing stories about voodoo curses, bizarre cemeteries and a grotto that protects the island from hurricanes.
Twelve fascinating tales of hauntings will keep you turning the pages. From stories about the ghost of famed author Ernest Hemingway, ghosts which haunt bars, forts, and highways to the strange love story of Count Von Cosel who preserved love after death for a former patient, this book compliments and expands upon the somewhat hokey but fun tours of haunted happenings in Key West. Delightful!
Variety of “mysterious” tales from the “Strange and Haunted” Key West. Told in the style of the Key West Original Ghost Tour both authors are involved with, the reader gets an introduction to the flavor of the city. I preferred the length and storytelling style in “Strange Key West” a little more than “Haunted Key West”. While the book is intended to be short story snippets I do wish the tales had been just a little longer with some more of the story’s origin added in. Overall a fun quick read for any reader who enjoys the paranormal.
Key West is one of the most haunted places in the United States. Sloan is a true believer. The combination is a book that combines history and personal experiences. I only wish that it had been longer and gone into more detail about, for example, Robert the Doll (Sl0an has written a separate book about him--maybe that's why there isn't much here!). The stories about Count von Cosel/Carl Tanzler, Hemingway's ghost cat, the mysterious lights that guide drivers during hurricanes are all things that you hear about while in Key West, collected in one place. Don't stop with the book, though--take a Ghosts and Gravestones Tour and meet Robert the Doll in person!
Just like Sloan's Ghosts of Key West, I'm being generous with the rating because the stories were interesting. This book is "Two Books in One" - Haunted Key West by Sloan, and Strange Key West by Matthew Sean Casey. These tales are slighly better written than Ghosts, but still lacking in the details like dates, and the who/when/where of first hand accounts.
Both Sloan and Casey have tried to create more of a story-telling vibe, though, which I am sure is a result of their jobs leading walking Ghost Tours in Key West.
A reread in anticipation of our upcoming trip. Some familiar old favorite ghost stories. Some of the stories are better than others, but they all have that crazy, quirky Key West feel!
