Maureen Doherty and her golden retriever Finn have taken possession of a charming old inn—only to discover that it’s already possessed by tenants whose lease on life already ran out . . .
Maureen's career as a sportswear buyer hits a snag just before Halloween, when the department store declares bankruptcy. Meanwhile, Finn's lost his way as a guide dog after flunking his test for being too friendly and easily distracted. Sadly, only one of them can earn unemployment, so Maureen's facing a winter of discontent in Boston--when she realizes she can't afford her apartment.
Salvation comes when she receives a mysterious inheritance: an inn in Haven, Florida. A quaint, scenic town on the Gulf of Mexico hidden away from the theme parks, Maureen believes it's a good place to make a fresh start with a new business venture. But she gets more than she bargained for when she finds a dead body on her property--and meets some of the inn's everlasting tenants in the form of ghosts who offer their otherworldly talents in order to help her solve the mystery...
Carol J. Perry is the author of the Witch City Mystery series and the Haunted Haven series, both from Kensington Publishers. The Witch City stories take place in the magical city of Salem, Massachusetts--the "Witch City." Carol was actually born in Salem (on Halloween eve!) and knows the city well. The Haunted Haven books take place in Carol's adopted home state of Florida. As an experienced travel writer for magazines and newspapers, Carol knows her way around the Sunshine State too. The Salem books are based of course on a real city but Haven, Florida is made up of bits and pieces of some of the Sunshine State's charming older towns--bypassed by the theme parks. Readers of the Witch City books have come to know O'Ryan, a most remarkable cat. The new series introduces Finn, a lovable Golden Retriever. Carol lives in the Tampa Bay area of Florida with her husband Dan.

This is a Paranormal Cozy Mystery, and this is the first book in A Haunted Haven Mystery series. I found this book so fun, and I loved getting to know these characters in this book. I have to say one of my favorite cozy mystery types is ones with a ghost, and this one has that. The ghosts in this book is done so well, and I loved the ghost's character. I hope the next book well bring in more ghosts characters. I guess one of the people that was apart of the murder from the beginning, so I have to say mystery parts was not the best. I feel this book so much fun and cute that I did not care. There was little twist and turn that I did not see coming before they where revealed. I can see this becoming one of my new favorite cozy mystery series. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Kensington Publishing Corporation) or author (Carol J. Perry) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.
My first by this author although I see she has written a number of books! Having read this one I will be looking out for her other series.
Be My Ghost is set in the small town of Haven in Florida, where Maureen Doherty and her dog Finn go to live after mysteriously inheriting an old inn. As can be guessed from the title there are ghosts in residence as well as people, and not all of them are friendly.
Maureen arrives not believing in the supernatural but she is forced to rearrange her beliefs very quickly. When a murder occurs on her property she has to search out the killer herself and the information she obtains from her ghostly companions helps a lot.
This is an entertaining book with some fun characters and a good story. When it came to the identity of the murderer I thought the 'who' was pretty obvious but the 'why' was unclear until the end. Also at the end were some rather tempting recipes. I will certainly be watching out for more of Maureen and Finn's adventures.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Be My Ghost by Carol J. Perry is the first book in the new paranormal cozy A Haunted Haven Mystery series. As with most cozy mystery series each book in this new paranormal mystery series will contain it’s own mystery that will be solved within so they can be read as a standalone or in any order if choosing to do so. Of course there will be some character development that carries over from book to book for those that follow the series in order.
Maureen Doherty had been settling into her career as a sportswear buyer for a department store when she got the news that the store would be closing. Maureen really didn’t have anything else lined up so she continued working until the very last day that she could and wondered just what she would do next with only a small amount in savings and her parting bonus.
At just that moment when Maureen needs it most she receives a letter from a lawyer informing her that she has a mysterious inheritance waiting for her in Haven, Florida. Maureen is now the new owner of a cozy inn on the Gulf of Mexico. The only catch to the inheritance is the inn is supposed to be haunted but not believing in ghosts Maureen sees it as the opportunity for a new career path.
Be My Ghost by Carol J. Perry was a great opening to this new cozy series. I really enjoyed getting to know the main character and those around her all the while following a mystery. I thought this first book was a little light on the actual sleuthing but with a great setting and a lot of potential in the future I still enjoyed this one and will look forward to reading more in the future.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
Appealing debut cozy ghost series. Protagonist, Maureen Doherty, is in her mid-thirties when she inherits the historic Haven House Inn in a Florida beach town from a woman she’s never heard of! Maureen just lost her fashion merchandising job so she loads her dog, Finn, in the car and drives from Massachusetts to Florida. Greeted at the Inn by four oddball ‘porch rockers’ and the disagreeable manager, Elizabeth, Maureen gets a taste of what she’s going to have to contend with. She doesn’t believe in ghosts, but once she’s settled in a room she becomes a believer! LOL! Author Perry gives her ghost characters a lot of freedom—they’re not restricted to the Inn and can travel, and some of the ghosts that visit the Inn are well-known names I recognized which I thought was cool!
The main murder mystery centers around the death of a ghost hunter and his success in capturing images that will prove his apparition investigations are true. A pool of suspects is on display early in the story that provide interesting decoys around the actual culprits. Maureen’s dog and the two cats, Bogie and Bacall that she inherits with the Inn enhance the cozy atmosphere of the old Florida charm in the Inn and the pet-friendly town. A great cast of supporting characters are formed in this first story who will support and move forward with Maureen’s vision for Haunted Haven. Various ghosts have their own haunting mysteries and humor livens up the plot! Recipes included.
I honestly reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and Kensington Publishing. All opinions are my own. Thank you.
I enjoy Carol Perry's Witch City Mystery books. So, when I saw book 1 of her new Haunted Haven series I jumped right on it. A must-read!
The Basics: When Maureen loses her job as in fashion marketing, she needs a new direction for her life. An unexpected inheritance gives her just what she needs....a new start in Florida for her and her Golden Retriever, Finn. As soon as she walks into her new inn, the adventure starts. The inn needs updating, the manager is snarky....plus her office is haunted. And....a guest drops dead. All on the first day..... New beginnings mean new challenges, right?
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The story kept my attention from start to finish, even though I pretty much figured out the mystery very early on. And, I got some unexpected laughter out of the audio book. Every time the narrator put in a "Woof!'' (Finn making commentary to his owner in the story), my Pom Chi would woof back. :)
I started reading a review copy of the ebook.....and finished with the audio book version. I really try hard to get books reviewed before release day when I have an ARC, but the continuing Covid mess and mucho overtime at work because of it has truly messed up my ability to meet deadlines. But in this case, the situation did give me the joy of sharing the audio experience with my enthusiastic dog, Princess.
CSE Cooney narrates the audio book (Tantor Audio). The audio is about 8 hours long and Cooney does a great job of voice acting. Very entertaining listening experience.
Full stars from me. Full barks from Princess. It's a success, Carol!
**I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy from Kensington, and listened to audio from Tantor Audio. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.**
This sounded like it had so much potential to be a lot of fun, and once in awhile it did look like the book was about to turn that corner. Alas, it never happened, and it's only too easy to pinpoint the problem: our heroine, Maureen, possesses zero curiosity.
First, she discovers she has inherited this inn down in Florida, from a woman she doesn't know, has never heard of, and so far as she knows is in way related to. So of course she hits the ground running on that, right? Immediately starts digging for answers and explanations? Umm, no; no, she does not. An occasional thought that way does drift through her mind but doesn't linger long enough to dislodge her plans to renovate the inn.
Oh! But the place is haunted! She must be intrigued by that and want to know more, right? Nope, not a bit. She grudgingly accepts that Lorna is real, but all those cold spots in Suite 27? Nah, just the AC acting up. The book is practically over before any spark of curiosity ignites on that one.
OK, but a murder happens almost as soon as she arrives at the inn, and local law enforcement clearly have her in its sights as a person of interest. That's going to light a fire under her and have her buzzing around doing her amateur sleuthing best to find the real killer! Umm...nope. There's a moment here, a moment there, but even when she becomes fully cognizant that she's high on the suspect list she still goes around acting like it's nothing to do with her. Once more, the book is almost over when she finally revs it up in that department.
The sad thing is, the mystery could have been wrapped up by Chapter Three anyway.
The setting and supporting characters were good, and I loved the dog and the cats.
Be My Ghost by Carol J. Perry Kensington Books Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me read this fun cozy ghost story!
Our gal of the story inherited an Inn that is well known to be haunted. It is booked often by ghost hunters. Our gal doesn't believe in ghosts when she first gets the Inn but on the first day she is there, she finds a dead body. Then she has a talk with a ghost! She finds that there are plenty of ghosts there. She is the primary suspect in the murder cases and she needs all the help she can get but she doesn't know anyone. But she finds help in the most otherworldly places!
It's a fun mystery with lots of clues, great characters, cute dog, loveable ghosts, and more! Enjoyable read and highly recommend!
I was not prepared for how much I was going to enjoy this book. Maureen is a fantastic character and the inheritance she receives is such a mystery, that it adds an intensity to the story. As a huge fan of this author, I’m excited to give Be My Ghost 5 stars. #BeMyGhost #NetGalley
New series by one of my favorite cozy authors even exceeded my expectations. When the store where Maureen Doherty has worked as a retail buyer for the past 10 years closes, a mysterious inheritance leads her to Haven, Florida and a haunted inn. From the outset, I fell in love with her character and her golden lab, Finn. The untimely death of a ghost hunter on her first night there motivates her to solve the mystery while trying to save the inn. Delightful characters band the story moves at a rapid pace. Maybe the murderer was a trifle evident, but getting there was truly a treat. Hope the wait for the next in the series isn't too long. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Be My Ghost is the first book in the new Haunted Haven Mystery series by author Carol J. Perry. I thought this was a good start to a new series. I liked the premise of the main character inheriting an inn that is home to a number of ghosts. Maureen Doherty has lost her job in Boston as a retail buyer when her employer closes. Just when she is trying to figure out what was next, Maureen gets notified that she inherited an Inn in Haven Florida. Maureen was a likable character and I enjoyed her journey. She is independent, focused and she has a wonderful dog Finn, who is a character in his own right. The secondary cast of characters is made up of a number of long-term residents, a few otherworldly residents, as well some of the citizens of Haven.
What surprised me was the mystery. I figured out the identity of the killer early on in the story. For me, I thought it was obvious in the way this particular character behaved. Although, I did enjoy it as Maureen and her employee Ted tried to figure out who was attempting to frame each of them for murder.
I enjoyed the first book enough to come back and see what the author has in store for book two.
I voluntarily read a digital advanced reader copy provided to me by the publisher, Kensington, through NetGalley. The thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
I made it to page 6. It was that awful. I am NOT reading over 200 pages of this woman conversing with her dog and the dog repeatedly responding, "Woof" to inane comments and questions. That was fun when I was six years old. Just tell the darn story. Waste of time.
The first in this new series, a department store buyer loses her job and moves from Boston to Florida. Maureen Doherty was on a downer as she was also unable to pay her rent on her apartment in Boston until she receives news of a surprise inheritance - in the form of an Inn in a place called Haven on the Gulf of Mexico. Could it be a new business opportunity for her? Arriving with her golden retriever Finn, she meets the oddball collection of locals and her manager, Elizabeth, at the Inn. As she starts to settle in Maureen realises there are other guests... of the ghostly variety. When a murder occurs on her property she goes in search of the killer.
This is a charming mix of ghostliness, furry friends and mystery, set in a pet-loving place. Maureen is a great, independent, smart, driven protagonist and her loving Finn is one of her main focuses. Witty and endearing, I shall be continuing with this humorous series and hope to read more about Maureen's Inn, Haunted Haven and her capers.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Kensington Books via NetGalley and this review is my unbiased opinion.
Good start to a good series. The story was good. The narrator was good. I didn’t care for the way the fmc allowed certain people to talk to her but I know it’s part of the book. I will definitely listen to the next one in the series.
Maureen has had a good career as a sportswear buyer at a large Boston department store for ages. But she's suddenly jobless when the store goes out of business. Luckily, the same day she finds a letter in the mail saying that's she's inherited an inn in Florida. But she doesn't know the woman who left it to her. Oh, and the inn is haunted. But the ral problem is on her first night there, she finds one of her guests dead on the front porch. And it's no accident. This fun start to a new paranormal cozy mystery series is full of crazy characters, both living and dead, that are sure to keep you entertained.
This was okay, but there was a lot not working for me. If I inherited an inn from someone I'd never met, I think I'd be a bit more curious about it. Maureen didn't seem all that concerned. And if I met an actual ghost, I think I'd have some questions! But, again, Maureen wasn't fussed about it. A lot of the side characters came off as kind of creepy to me. Particularly the female lawyer and the bartender. And what's with Maureen's parents? She talked to them once. I guess we see where her lack of curiosity comes from. If this were the author's first book, I might give another one a shot, but I see that they have an entire other series they wrote before this one, so I think I'll pass on any future books.
I really enjoyed this book the further I got into it. The beginning was slow and almost gave up 3 times! Glad I stayed with it. There still seems to be something about the way the author writes that just doesn’t seem to ‘click’ for me. Maybe it will all blend together nicely in the next book due out in October.
Maureen's job has come to an end. After years in the world of retail, her place of employment is closing. She is officially out of a job. Prospects are non-existent but as she attempts to plan for her future a surprise arrives...in the form of an envelope.
She has somehow become the heir of an inn in Haven, Florida. How, she has no idea. Since she has no other options to Haven she goes...Upon arrival she is told that her inn may be haunted. No worries right? It's just a rumor...
After only one day, Maureen's life becomes even more complicated. It seems one of her guests is dead...and she happens to be the one to find him. Police come. Investigations begin and somehow she is the prime suspect.
How can she begin her new life as an innkeeper and clear her name of all suspicion? And why exactly is her office always so cold? Was she dreaming the other night or was that really a ghost in her room trying on her clothes?
What a fun read!! I was definitely in the right mood for this one! It's fun. It's spooky. There's death...a mystery...and old town feels. Very enjoyable. I can't wait for the next one.
I sincerely appreciate Kensington Books for providing me with an ARC. All opinions expressed herein are mine and mine alone. This one comes out August 31 so make sure to snag it! Would be perfect for Spooktober.
What a fun read this mystery was! Well written with a delightful cast of characters, it kept me engrossed in the story from the very beginning. Maureen is off on a new career, not really by her choosing. The department store in Boston where she worked as a sportswear buyer declares bankruptcy, and then she discovers she had inherited an inn in Florida. So she packs up her few belongings, takes her beloved dog Finn, and goes off to begin a new life. It just wasn’t what she expected it to be. But then, who would have thought she would make friends with a starlet ghost who died decades before! Unfortunately, Maureen also discovers a very dead man on her porch, a ghost hunter who came to expose the ghosts he was sure inhabited the inn. Well, Maureen has many things to attend to – updating the sadly neglected inn, trying to change procedures in order to make a profit instead of running in the red each month, finding the killer, and oh yes, becoming friends with her resident ghost. This story is quite charming and entertaining. There are some unanswered questions that surely will addressed in future novels. We don’t know the connection between the former owner of the inn and Maureen, but it’s bound to be interesting!
When the department store that Maureen Doherty works at goes bankrupt, it's a stressful time until she and her failed guide dog Finn (he failed because he was too friendly) find their lives changed forever by an inheritance, ghosts and murder!
I'm a big fan of Carol J. Perry's books and this first book, in her new series, was everything I'd hoped. The mystery was fast-paced and filled with red herrings. A favorite thing about the author's characters is that they are genuine and relatable. Maureen is smart, kind and determined to make a new life for her and Finn. I also enjoyed the witty banter between Lorna and Maureen. Lorna is fun and a fashionista, but that's all I'm saying! I enjoyed the descriptions of balmy Florida, the Inn and beach...I felt as if I was there, searching for clues. The quirky characters who work at the Haven Inn are perfect and the gorgeous felines, Bogey and Bacall, become great friends with Finn.
I'm looking forward to another visit to Haven!
I received an ARC from NetGalley and the opinions expressed in this review are my own.
I picked this one up for my Halloween Theme Read because I was already a fan of the author's Witch City series and because it combined Halloween with ghosts. This one was good, with an intriguing plot and who wouldn't love to inherit a haunted inn from someone they don't remember meeting? Maureen seemed like a likeable, practical and competent person, if a bit naïve. I liked the eccentric residents, especially the ghosts (Lorna is a hoot!)
While the plot was good, it was the police investigation that detracted from my enjoyment. With an unrealistic officer character and questionable police procedure, the inanity of their encounters had me flipping pages. I'm not looking for ultra-realistic law enforcement portrayal, just something that at least sounds like it could happen that way without making the officer look like Barney Fife with a bad attitude.
Overall, I liked this one but didn't love it. I'd be open to giving book 2 a try if there is one, but this one is just...okay.
This was my first Carol J. Perry book and I loved it! The store Maureen Doherty has worked as a retail buyer for the past 10 years closes and a sudden mysterious inheritance leads her somewhere new. That new place being Haven, Florida and a hunted inn! The untimely death of a ghost hunter on her first night at the inn motivates her to investigate and save the inn she has now inherited. The characters were awesome in this one! I loved her golden lab, Finn ❤️ This one was quick paced and a great cozy mystery!
Maureen is surprised to hear that that she has inherited an old Florida inn from a complete stranger. She finds the place is already occupied by the previous owner's employees, permanent residents and at least one ghost. A guest is murdered as soon as Maureen arrives, making her a part of the investigation. This is the first in a series and is an interesting mystery, involving poison, ghost hunting and some quirky characters.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Publishers for the opportunity to read this book and review it. Also thank you to Carol J. Perry for sharing her ideas and talents with us. Ghosts and dogs...how could this go wrong?. Those are two of my favorite things. That being said, I enjoyed this book way more than I thought I would. Maureen Dougherty finds out, right after losing her job, that she has been left Haven House Inn by a woman that she, nor her parents, have ever heard of. Despite the oddness of the situation, Maureen packs up her entire life and her dog, Finn, and moves from Minnesota to Florida. What she finds is an inn that is in a dire financial situation...and that is haunted. What follows is a delightful, if half baked, murder mystery. There were so many great things about this book. I loved the diverse cast of characters. Finn, the golden retriever, was my favorite, although Lorna, the ghost movie star, was a close second. A good dog always adds such warmth and depth to a story. Finn’s job was to keep things light. Lorna, the lingering ghost of a B movie actress, gives the lead character a friend and forces her to accept that things aren’t always what they seem. There are also Molly, Gert, Sam, and George. These characters live at the inn in exchange for various services. Then, there’s Elizabeth. She’s the manager and is incredibly rude and bitter. All members of the hotel staff are annoyed by the presence of a ghost hunter. This is a fun story with a variety of characters. As many things as this book had going for it, there were also a few drawbacks. Firstly, we never find out why Maureen inherits the inn from a complete stranger. The murder mystery part of the story feels predictable and half-baked. The method and motives are tired. While this didn’t take away much of the pleasant story, it was a bit irritating. Overall, this book was a reasonably fun way to spend an evening.
Be My Ghost is the first book in a new paranormal cozy series, “A Haunted Haven Mystery,” from author Carol J. Perry. It is fitting somehow that this book is centered around Halloween and a haunted inn and that ghosts play a main role throughout the story. Maureen loses her job when the company goes bankrupt, then inherits an old inn in Florida. The timing is perfect, and she sets out to start a new life, but she no more than gets to the Inn and discovers a body on the front porch.
Characters in a new series often develop over time, and this is a good thing as it gives readers a chance to grow with them. I have an issue with some in this story, namely Maureen. She doesn’t seem to think that inheriting an inn from someone she did not know is a big deal, even though it should be. Her personality takes some getting used to, and the ghosts need more depth to carry a series. The paranormal aspects were interesting and, hopefully, will evolve with subsequent additions to the series.
The victim is an unknown; readers don’t get a great sense of who he was or anything about his personality. The suspects were easy to spot, and unfortunately, so was the killer. For me, Be My Ghost didn’t have enough mystery, ghosts, or twists to make it great, but it was fun to read. The inn is intriguing, and many would love to spend a few days there looking for ghosts. I enjoy paranormal cozies and reading the first book in a new series like this always brings me joy. Some further development of the characters, and perhaps more involvement from Maureen’s family, and a whole lot more curiosity from Maureen, will make this series a favorite for readers who love ghost-based books and characters that are a bit unconventional. Carol Perry is a gifted writer, and taking on a new series isn’t easy, but I know she will make it work. I look forward to the next book.
Maureen Doherty is closing out the professional chapter in her life as a buyer for a long established Boston department store that is closing its doors. Unsure of what the future holds, she leaves the building for the last time and heads to her apartment not even sure how much longer she can stay there with no paycheck coming in.
When she gets home she finds a letter from a law firm in Florida asking them to call her about a bequest that was left to her. With nothing tying her and her golden retriever, Finn, to the area, she decides to make the move, even if she doesn’t know who her benefactress was.
Arriving in Haven, Florida Maureen and Finn discover their new home is an old, supposedly haunted, historic inn right near the Gulf Coast waterfront, When Maureen finds a guest dead, she quickly becomes the prime suspect and vows to find the murderer and save the inn. But who to trust and who had the means, notice and opportunity to kill the man and set Maureen up to take the fall? All in a days work if Maureen is going to save the inn that is now her home.
A great start to a new series from the talent Carol J. Perry. I loved her previous series based in Salem, MA and I was curious how she would parley Florida into her style…boy did she deliver! A great cozy for mystery lovers and fans of Perry’s.
Thanks Kensington Books and Netgalley for this arc in exchange for my review!!
Paranormal. Cozy. Mystery. Need I say more?? 💖
I am a sucker for a cozy mystery and this story was just what I needed in my life. It brought on all sorts of fall vibes - I even listened to some fall weather ambience while reading... really transported me to the inn Maureen was running!
So basically this story follows Maureen and her ADORABLE dog, Finn. She gets a letter in the mail saying she's inherited a residence but the weird part is... she doesn't know the person who left it to her 😶
When she arrives she notices there's a lot of fixing up to be done for her to run the inn and finds out the place is said to be 💫 haunted 💫
The rest of the story is full of paranormal experiences, mysterious murder, questionable people, a cute bartender, and a lot of fun!
The actual mystery aspect was fun but not hard to crack (and that's coming from someone who never guesses the endings lol)
I would recommend if: 🏚 you like cozy mysteries 🐕 you enjoy a good doggo 👻 you like ghosts
It's really irking me that she rolled up on the places and started welcoming people. Yes, you inherited it but you've never been there! You haven't even walked in the door! So weird.
I spend a lot of time with my cat, he's clingy and I'm not a big fan of people so it works out. However, i don't narrate my actions or intentions and i sure am shit don't tell him to *look at signs* that I've *pointed out and talked to him about.* I understand the need for exposition but holy hell. Police officer drafting the lead is concerned about getting back to get dog after three questions? What? Someone else putting him in a room without taking his leash off? Is this classic "good person, bad person" crap?
An adequate start to a cosy mystery series, but maybe not the best I've encountered.
The way the main character interacts with her dog - and how he constantly answers her back - felt a bit juvenile. Just a smidge too much. (This was toned down in book 2 though, which made that one better for me, in case you're wondering.)
Anyway: The ghost stories are pretty charming and the murder side of things might be horrible and a bit on the nose. (There really aren't many suspects, just point the finger at the character you dislike the absolute most and you'll be right on target.)
As I've already listened to book 2, let's just say I found the book charming enough to continue the series. 😊
