This book begins like a scholastic read for preteens with basic info sprinkled with dad jokes. However, the text gets much darker in later chapters examining Anxiety Monsters, Created Monsters, and ultimately Man as Monster.

Amidst all the monstrosities, there is a positive message.

“As the earth's most powerful species, the only animal with values, we must rise above the fears and confusions inherent in the monster image and place positive value on the full continuum of nature. Everything is connected; there is nothing alien under the sun. The fear and distrust of strangeness of abnormality-has no place in a sane and self-respecting world. Abnormality is a matter of numbers and degrees, not a condition of reality. And it has nothing to do with evil. Unless we can rid ourselves of xenophobic furies and suspicions and the tendency to apply the negative connotations of the monster image to everything that differs, be it political or physical, we run the risk of becoming a monster that not only consumes the rest of nature, but also itself.”

The Prices’ knowledge of fine art is fully displayed throughout the book, but especially in the insightful epilogue attributed solely to the senior Vincent.

Vincent Price got an Encyclopedia Britannica set for Christmas and looked up the word "Monster". Now he's ready to punch you in the face with knowledge until you learn to like it.

Excellent. The text is interesting and every so often there's a little zinger. Great pictures.
