A grumpy lumberjack Former Army Ranger Harrison Wilkes isn’t actually a lumberjack, but he's doing his best impression while hiding out in the mountains of East Tennessee. He needs to rest, recharge, and stay the hell away from people, while he wrestles with ghosts from his past and figures out his future. Neither includes a snowbound rescue of his favorite author.
A runaway writer Ivy Blake is on a deadline. Her hero is MIA, and she's desperate to find some peace, quiet, and inspiration to get her book—and her life—back on track. She doesn’t plan on driving off a mountain. Or the mysterious stranger who shows up to save her.
Who’s rescuing who? When Winter Stormageddon traps them together, Ivy finds the inspiration she didn’t know she needed in her real-life hero. As more than the fireplace heats up his one-man cabin, they both find far more than they bargained for. This intuitive author just might have the answers Harrison's looking for, but will their newfound connection survive past the storm?
Kait Nolan is a RITA® Award-winning Mississippi author who calls everyone sugar, honey, or darlin', and can wield a 'Bless your heart' like a Snuggie or a saber, depending on requirements. She believes in love, laughter, and that tacos are the world's most perfect food. When she's not writing, reading, working the evil day job, or wrangling family (both the two-legged and the four-), you can find her obsessively watching The Great British Bake Off.
I enjoyed parts of this book because I love a fluffy romance as much as the next girl.
And this book has a lot of fluffy, cozy, snowed-in-in-a-cabin vibes. Those vibes delivered; I loved how easily Ivy and Harrison got together and how naturally they connected.
However, the overly tough army man (the one who knows everything about survival but doesn’t know that you don’t need cellphone reception to call emergency services) made me roll my eyes too much to give this book more than three stars.
I was briefly considering four, but then the stupid third-act breakup happened. It happened because they didn’t swap phone numbers, which 🙄. Please don’t insult my intelligence, dear author.
I might still continue the series, though, because I never promised to make sense.
I love a good snowed in trope, and the scenes of him rescuing her and warming her up (with his body heat, of course) were fantastic.
I would have liked to see a bit more of them together after the reconciliation — I did actually buy this 80% crisis, though, despite it being a failure to communicate.
3.5 ⭐️ This was a nice short story. Suitable for a quick, easy read. My favorite part was the rescue itself. It was interesting when Harrison spoke about writing and inspired Ivy's storyline for her book. You can only fit so much into the short, so the romance is fast pace.
Kait Nolan + Amy McFadden + Forced proximity = A Fun listen. Sort of spin off from Misfit Inn, but not necessary to read/listen to those first. It’s Insta love which isn’t always my fav - but Nolan did a good job of making the short time count and I really felt connected to the characters and them to each other.
Baby, It’s Cold Outside by Kait Nolan is a Eden’s Ridge/Misfit Inn novella. This is another great addition to this series!
Ivy, a best-selling author who has writer’s block and decides she needs to find a place to relax and get her mojo back decides to book a room at the Misfit Inn. While on the way there a Winter-gaddon Snowstorm hits while she's driving a bear appears in front of her car and she goes off the road and through the guardrail. No cell service and trapped in her car…luckily Harrison, who is also a writer, ex-military and hiding from the world is on his way back up the mountain and sees the guard rail down so he stops to help, he doesn’t want company but he is closer to his place then town and with the snow falling faster its safer to go to his place. Neither is ready to admit that they are stuck until the roads are cleared and he can take her back down the mountain and get on with his life and she can find her happy place to write. Except Harrison helps Ivy with her writer’s block and the words start flowing, when she leaves her writings laying on the table he reads its only to discover his favorite author is a woman…Ivy.
After the roads are cleared he takes her to Misfit Inn but they both miss each other and the bond that has started taking place but...can these two find a way to be together permanently or will Harrison let her go because he doesn’t think he is the right man for her and lose the bright star in his life??
I wrote in a previous Kait Nolan review I had a number of her books but it was the first one I'd read and I quite enjoyed it. This is now the second book and I enjoyed it even more. While rather short at just under 200 pages, there was enough story to love it.
Ivy, our heroine is a successful author but she has a serious case of writers block. She decides to get away from it all and start the book all over. Along the way, she runs into a freak snowstorm and drives off the road.
Harrison, our hero and former Army Ranger is at a funeral of a an army friend of his who was killed on duty. He's still dealing with a lot of issues from his time in the army and a crushing sense of guilt from what happened. A friend offered up his cabin in the mountains Harrison could decompress. He's caught in the same freak snowstorm while driving to the cabin and when he sees signs of an accident, stops to help.
Of course it's Ivy he rescues and he takes her to the cabin to get out of the storm. She's injured but not too badly though they are trapped together. This is a fairly standard trope, forced proximity and it's one many of us romance readers, including myself, love. Harrison is a wounded soul and Ivy is the perfect person to help him. There is great chemistry between them and they are both well drawn characters. There's nothing unusual about this book book but it is a most enjoyable and readable book of this type and I quite happily recommend it. I'm not going to take so long reading my next !at Nolan book and much to my delight, I already own the second book in the series.
If I’d read this book instead of listening to the audiobook I’m not sure I’d have finished. I liked the story, but I had one big problem with the book. There is way too much inner monologue. Nothing is more boring than reading page after page of someone arguing with themself.
If that doesn’t bother you then I recommend the story. This is a great grumpy/ sunshine romance. Ivy is sweet and open and Harrison is closed off and hurting.
The book starts off reminding us of how Ivy and Harrison met. I loved the two of them together. Ivy is so outgoing and fun to be around. Harrison was in the military and has some ghosts to get past. I don’t think once a man is in the military he e Er stops trying to help people which makes Harrison so special. There are some misunderstandings in the book that made me sad. Ms. Nolan’s writing keeps me wanting more. I strongly encourage you to read the book. I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader’s Copy of this book.
Enjoyed the book, but would have preferred more time between the two main characters besides just them having sex. They spent maybe 3 days together, 2 of which having sex. When they did talk it was interesting. They supposedly spent 2 weeks together, but the author chose not to show us those days, just skipped over them to get to the grand expected "misunderstanding".
y’all my new favorite thing is listening to audiobooks while tanning and oh my gosh did this one not disappoint!!! i feel like i am being blessed with a good streak of audiobooks.
omggggg. this novel was absolutely amazing, the chemistry ivy and harrison had was astounding.
their relationship was so cute, and had such a emotional yet believable feel. i went into the book blind however was blown away with the character development.
i just wanted to let you know how much i enjoyed the whole plot, and the smut which of course is a bonus point lol. i cant wait until i get to buy the remaining books in the series.
the tropes in this book were so amazing!!! round up: one bed trope, forced proximity trope, small town romance, locked in, authors
i am usually not a fan of novellas because i feel like they sometimes are rushed in the ending and don’t seem finished however this is an exception!!
“God was in a very, very good mood when he made you.” “..pretty sure that was the United States Army” “God bless America.” - literally one of my favorite scenes in the book it was incredibly hot yet so fitting for them.
and whenever she said she thinks she died and he said he thinks he can find some proof of life as he dived back into her…. i was shocked!
This is such a sweet story about two lonely people. Harrison is a war veteran, locked into the terrible event that killed several members of his team. He is reclusive, and having just gone to the funeral of another of his men he has travelled into the mountains to a friend’s cabin, to be by himself. On the way to the cabin, in a snowstorm, he comes across a car that has crashed off the road, and it is only a tree that is stopping it from smashing into a huge boulder further down the mountain. He grabs a rope and climbs down to the car, and finds Ivy. She is not too badly hurt, and is singing loudly to keep herself from being too scared. He manages to get her out of the vehicle through the rear window, and they climb back up to safety. The weather is really closing in, it is closer to his cabin than attempting to take her back to the town, so they head to his cabin to wait out the storm.
Ivy is also a bit of a recluse. She is a thriller writer with several best sellers to her name ... at least, to her alias, her readers think the books are written by a man. She has writers block, the new story just won’t come together, and she is being hounded by her agent and the publisher, the book should be on the shelves by now! So she has run away, up to the mountains where they won’t be able to find her, so that she can try and work out her story in peace.
They are forced to spend a few days together until the weather improves, and they get on well, so much so that when help is available to take her back to her booked room in the hotel in the town she chooses to stay with Harrison. They are both really able to talk to each other, a new experience for both of them! Harrison suggests a new angle for her story, and suddenly the words are flowing. She moves back to the hotel to concentrate on the book. Then disaster strikes their relationship, it seems there will be no way back. But Harrison has a plan ...
This is a delightful love story, the characters are well depicted and you can understand why they are like they are. It is perfectly believable, and well written. Well worth reading.
He is used to raising the stakes but he never dreamt he could lose But he did twice. Would he strike it lucky the third time around? She wrote herself into a corner but a lumberjack pulled her out and then disappeared A lovely story line that is well written
Just perfection. It was everything you could have wanted from a short, romance novel. I loved every second of it and it was as beautiful as the snow flakes that fluttered down from the sky. I enjoyed this book so thoroughly
i dnf'd this one a couple years ago but the start of a reading slump made me give it a second chance and i'm so glad i did. this was super cozy and cute. harrison and ivy were adorable.
Harrison Wilkes is a former Army Ranger that just needs to get away. On the way to his friend's remote cabin in the mountains he comes across a car that's gone over the edge of a cliff. Without much thought he propels down the side of the mountain to get to the person stuck inside. Turns out he just rescued his favorite author and now they are stuck together until the winter storm passes. Ivy Blake never thought when she ran away, to try and get passed her writers block, that she would be ran off the road by a bear or that a sexy lumberjack would rescue her. Turns out all she needed was a grumpy lumberjack to come along and ravish her to unlock the words. Together these two discover love as a way to heal one another. Such a sweet, funny, feel-good romance. Definitely worth a listen!
Really enjoyed this one, both main characters are relatable and interesting. Loved the relationship development between them. And the miscommunication was resolved very quickly.
Another achingly sweet and heartwarming story with a heaping side of steamy! I love Kait Nolan’s stories and the narrator for her books is fantastic. At this point, I’ve read or listened to over 20 books by this author and I’ve yet to find one that I didn’t enjoy.
I rarely read novellas, since I find that it’s a very hard venue for an author. Mainly, because they have to develop a plot and characters within the confines of just a few pages. But , I love anything Ms Nolan writes, so I grasped the opportunity when it presented. I suspect this will be a “bridge” novella for a potential new series in Edge Ridge since this is where part of the story happens , and it had some crossover characters from the Misfit Inn series as well. The story centers around Ivy Blake and Harrison Wilkes. Ivy is a very successful author of thrillers, though she has a male pen name. At the moment, she has hit the infamous writer’s block and decides a change of scenery might help her get inspiration. Harrison is an ex- Army Ranger , who carries a great deal of survival guilt for the men he lost in battle. He takes up the offer of an isolated cabin a friend has up in the mountains of Eden’s Ridge. He meets Ivy literally by accident and rescues her in the snowstorm. As well as help her with her book. The chemistry is evident but life has a way of creating chaos . Each one thought the other had left without looking back. It’s a sweet story, with interesting main and secondary characters. I can easily see stories for some of them. It’s also a story that highlights the effects war and loss has on our returning troops. Reminding us that as a society , we need to do more to help them integrate back to civilian life. My only but in the book, was that I found the ending a little abrupt. It seemed more like a prequel where we will likely get more on the main characters in future stories. Not sure if that will happen here. I was gifted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
This is the first book in the Rescue My Heart series that I have had sitting on my Kindle for some time. If you have followed my reviews you know I just love Kait Nolan books but this book left me a little flat. I enjoyed it and liked the characters but something was missing for me. It had the right premise of a great story – sexy ex-military damaged man, struggling author needing to overcome her writer's block and her own isolation, a snowstorm in the mountains, chemistry and a rescue. What more did I need!
This is the question I am still asking myself!!!!!!!
I had to be ME.
As Kait Nolan’s words are some of my favourite words ever printed that make me laugh, smile, cry, feel sad, feel inspired but most of all makes me feel the love she gives in each book she writes.
This book was once just a short novella that the author rewrote to make it a full novel, I have not the previous read the first novella only this finished work. Maybe this is the reason that this book did not grab me completely as all the other Kait Nolan books have. I would have liked it to have been a longer story with more time to learn more about these characters as I believe the speed in which the story took place in might have been the reason I did not completely content with it.
Happily going to read the next book in this series.
I absolutely loved the first release! I was an ARC reader for that one and gave an honest review. Ms. Nolan knows how to produce a quality written story with well rounded characters. This updated version blew me away. To all the military who serve and have served, thank you. This version goes more in-depth with PTSD and survivors guilt and Ms. Nolan did a remarkable job. No cheating or cliffhanger, some steamy intimacy scenes and our couple are one step closer to their happy ever after. Enjoy!
Short and sweet. We love some forced proximity (love the trope shout out in-book, very meta), the *accidental* miscommunication (accidental is important bc miscommunication SUCKS but in this c case Harrison had a very good reason and Ivy was mature enough to listen and understand). I didn’t love the insta-love, as this all happens in a week, but they’re cute enough I can get over it.
Former Army Ranger Harrison Wilkes is looking forward to a quiet week at an insolated cabin after attending the funeral of a former comrade when he comes across an accident scene. Ivy Blake is on a deadline but has severe writers block and is driving to a spa to hide when her SUV goes off the road.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was an interesting blend of the problems faced by Authors and soldiers suffering PTSD and survivors guilt. Deep and meaningful subjects with a touch of humour to balance it out. Recommended.
