Political games can be deadly....

Elise Carmichael is a court sign-language interpreter who reads lips all the time. As a widow with a young son who is deaf, lipreading is simply second nature, until the day she reads the lips of someone on the phone discussing an attempt to be made on a senator’s life - a senator who just happens to be her mother-in-law. Before she can decide what she needs to do, she receives the information that her son is rushed to the ER and that she must leave. Then she later sees the news report that her mother-in-law has been shot and killed. But when she comes forward, her life, as well as her son’s life, may now be in the crosshairs of the assassin.

Elise has a talent for reading lips. When her son was born deaf she learned sign language and reading lips, then after her husbands death who was killed in action as a marine she went to work for a law firm to advocate for deaf defendants. One day while she's in court she happens to "hear" a conversation from across the room where a security guard makes plans to kill Senator Lilliana York, her mother in law. When she is about to report it, she gets a phone call about her son who broke his arm on the playground. When she finishes dealing with her son, she forgets all about the threat until she turns on the news the next morning and sees the headline of murdered senator. Now she has to deal with the death of her mother in law and the knowledge that she could have stopped it. When the security guard turns up dead and threats turn up on her doorstop, she has to try find the murderer before the threats become too real.
This was a fast paced read that was hard to put down. I was a huge fan of the show Sue Thomas F.B. Eye and it reminded me of that show. The murder plot wasn't too surprising and the characters at times were a bit predictable. I did enjoy the story line, although the conclusion was a bit of a coincidence. They just happened to have the equipment they needed and she just happened to know exactly how to use it even though the police didn't which is unbelievable but possible

This is a suspect story at its finest. As Elise struggles with her faith in God, she finally realizes that He is with her all the time. The focus on the power of prayer and how it changes her life, recharging her spiritual life, is affirming. A great story with wonderful characters and an intriguing plot makes for an interesting read. The details about Elise’s son’s day-to-day life while suffering from hearing loss was enlightening.
