Five years after her mother’s murder, Carlen is having flashbacks about that day. She doesn’t understand why since she didn’t witness what happened. When she tries to talk to her father about it, he refuses to discuss the murder. Carlen explains that she needs answers so she can put the past behind her. An emergency causes Carlen to return to her hometown. While staying in the house where the murder took place, Carlen finds a clue to who killed her mother. The truth might be more than Carlen can handle, but it’s also the only way to be free from what haunts her.
Carlen Dupre's story isn't an easy one. I hurt for her, and I understood her. I don't like to use the word "trigger" but it did bring back painful memories of my own. But Five Years Later is more than tragedy. It is a story of Carlen's fight to become her own woman. To be healthy. To forgive and to be forgiven. And to find love. If you have a challenging past, you'll find yourself in these pages.
First book by this Author. Enjoyed the read and rooted for certain characters but I worked the plot twist out about 15% in. If I hadn't, it probably would have been a 5 star? (Only criticism is that everybody "sings" instead of "says" and it became a bit tedious.)
An enjoyable read, and very interesting. I definitely recommend it! I was drawn into the main character’s current life and her attempts to remember her traumatic past...and in the process learning to forgive herself as well as the person in her life who hurt her the most. An added bonus was the book’s setting, an area local to me and with which I am very familiar.
