An Advent for the Cosmos

Rate this book
Welcome to “An Advent for The Cosmos”. Advent means “coming”, referring to Jesus’ coming to earth as a baby, to ultimately redeem us and the rest of His creation. Like a typical advent book, this book consists of 25 daily Bible studies that build on one another to help keep you focused on the reason for the Christmas season. What is different about this advent book is that it incorporates some of the Biblical content of Dr. Michael Heiser’s work on the divine council, the original context of the Scriptures, and the bigger cast of characters in the Bible. My hope is that this Advent book will expand the scope of your reading of the Bible, show you the extent of rebellion and corruption of God’s creation, and convey the need for restoration. It will also trace Jesus’ intervention throughout the story and explore the interaction between the visible and invisible worlds. There are three ways the word “Advent” or “coming” applies Remembering that Jesus came 2,000 years ago to redeem His cosmos, Seeing His action through believers every day to demonstrate His kingdom, and Knowing that He is coming again as King to complete the restoration of His corrupted creation. This book consists of 25 daily Bible Studies that are meant to be read starting on December 1st and culminating on December 25th (Christmas). Each day consists of Bible memory, an Intro to the day’s topic, Bible Reading, a Summary and Discussion, Questions, a Prayer, and a Song or Songs that correspond with the day’s study.A majority of the advent memory verses will trace the story of Faith in Hebrews 11 with other key verses as needed. A smaller segment of the memory verse has been highlighted for younger children if they cannot memorize the entire verse. This is not just a kid’s book, but can be read as an individual, a couple, a family, a small group, or along with an entire church.

We read this Advent book over the last weeks with whoever was in our home and at our dinner table amongst our adult children over the last weeks. We liked the short devotionals each day followed by the questions and we especially liked the songs selected for each day. The perspective was unique and not the typical Advent readings and thoughts. My husband is a big Michael Heiser fan, so he especially loved the book.

I liked it.

If you like Dr. Michael S. Heiser's work you will probably like it. It is short and sweet, helping you to focus on the arrival of the King from the 1st to the 25th. Good job.

Not only was this a wonderful Advent devotional for all ages, but it is also an excellent overview of the biblical narrative and God’s love for the cosmos through it all. Relevant for anytime of year!

Fantastic

A theological game changer. I highly recommend this book during Advent to push back on the silly sentiment toxic in our culture
