Sh’rae Breton has worked hard to ascend the ranks of the prestigious and noble Cityguard, earning her first command under the watch of the legendary Captain Halte.

Chaster Forley would disagree. He is the Dead King’s own kin, yet still relegated to following orders given by his intellectual inferiors.

Their mission, to escort a large caravan of refugees through the Red Forest, is not quite the chance for glory that either had hoped. However, a shadow follows their every step, and an ancient power marks their trail.

Something is rising in the forest...

Jesse LeBourdais

Jesse LeBourdais was born in Horsefly, BC; a small town in the Cariboo. He has spent the majority of his adult life living and playing music in Vancouver, BC, focusing on putting rubber to road and fingers to chords. A consummate touring performer, he has played hundreds of shows across North America; thousands of kilometres travelled with little more than a guitar, his unique voice, and a will to endure all there is to be found.

With his music, he sings songs steeped in the folk traditions of storytelling and fueled by the raw emotion of punk rock. Sometimes played solo, sometimes played with a full band, his songs reveal common veins of life, humanity and hope, affirmed through heart-felt lyrics and passionate performances.

Recently focusing attention on long-form writing, his first novel, FIRELIGHT, was released in late 2020 via Falter Press to critical acclaim. Self-produced and published, Firelight found LeBourdais channeling a lifetime of experience through his unique imagination, literally creating a whole new world, filled with realistic and entertaining characters. His second novel, THE THIRD SUN, will be released in summer 2023

An avid gardener, woodworker, and coffee roaster, Jesse owns and operates FALTER FARMS, a small coffee roasting, woodworking, and gardening company in Vancouver, where he lives with his partner Denise, and dog Dale.

Alright! so I loved Sh’rae Breton!
Cheeky and I am here for it.
Okay, alright! I will admit, I enjoyed all of the characters but Sh’rae Breton is probably my favourite.

Debut novel by Canadian author Jesse LeBourdais and what a debut it is. Magic, Goblins, Corruption and Redemption, who wouldn't get excited?
I truly am impressed on how much world building was packed into a fantasy read of this size. It blows my mind and was extremely refreshing.
As a friend of mine said (Lezlie- The Nerdy Narrative), "Look, these kinds of fantasy books are UNICORNS...they literally don't exist in the wild!" --- WELL SAID!
Fantasy becomes so convoluted, there are so many layers, so many elements, the world and character building alone can cause for a beast of a first book. This may be this books only downfall, at times and also my reasoning for taking off a star from my rating. Trying to pack this much into book one in a series did cause for some confusion now and then. However that said, this didn't take me out of the story or cause me to put it down. As I read on everything came together and it wrapped up nicely.

I really enjoyed Jesse's writing style! When picking up my copy from a local indie book seller I found out that Jesse is also a musician and after reading Firelight, it completely makes sense. Jesse's writing is so smooth, his wording of choice was perfect, the descriptions were spot on and it really helped build the whole atmosphere for this story.

Although I purchased a copy, Jesse was so kind to send me a copy of the audiobook to help me get around to reading it much sooner and with my crazy back logged reviewing list this was so appreciated.
I was extra surprised when I found out that Jesse narrated the audio version himself. Audiobooks are always that much better when the book is read by the author directly, this way they can portray the emotions they were wanting the reader to feel in each moment throughout.

I defiantly look forward to reading on with this series and look forward to reading more of Jesse's work in the future.

Thank you all for reading

LeBourdais has created a vivid new fantasy world with kick-ass, complex characters and almost-familiar creatures. Firelight sucked me in and left me wanting more. I can't wait for the second instalment!

Jesse really has found his voice in his second book. The characters and the worlds he creates are uniquely his own. Highly recommend!
