OHKUBO Atsushi

Atsushi Ōkubo ( 大久保篤), also romanized as Atsushi Ohkubo, is a Japanese manga author and fantasy artist known for his work on the manga series Soul Eater, which has been adapted into an anime. Okubo worked as an assistant under Rando Ayamine, on the manga series Get Backers. He also created artwork for various cards for the Lord of Vermillion game.

Atsushi Ōkubo was not a model student and was more attracted to drawing than to learning. At the age of 20, after finishing studies at a manga school where he met Rando Ayamine, the author of Get Backers, he became Rando Ayamine's assistant for two years. Finally, he won a competition at Square Enix's Gangan magazine with his first manga series B.Ichi and it was published for four volumes. After the end of his last manga, he created Soul Eater, still for Square Enix's Gangan magazine, which brought him worldwide success.

The writing is steadily improving. The plot feels more continuous between books, like things are starting to weave into a larger narrative & the characters are developing nicely, building up their tragic backstories & motivations.

Okay, can someone please fucking explain to me why Mifune is NEVER discussed when people are showering this series in praise?! Holy shit, this guy is easily one of the coolest samurai in manga/anime history and yet no one, NO ONE, talks about him! I'm starting to think that Soul Eater has some of the most underappreciated characters in this series, first Lord Death and now Mifune. Seriously, this man is so fucking dedicated to protecting Angela that he's willing to work with an organization he clearly doesn't align with ideologically or morally, and even when he's forced to kill Black Star (which he manages to avoid, thank you Sid and Azusa), he STILL hesitates because he cares so much about children. This dude is so damn cool and is so underappreciated it straight up kills me.

Also, I'm not sure if I've brought this up in the past, but Ohkubo's name pun game is so fucking strong in this series. Marie Mjolnir is easily the most obvious and yet funny pun name because Ohkubo put all of his heart and soul into the Thor motif.

And finally, I know we've only just been introduced to Arachne, but I already can't stand her and see her as a serious step down from the greatness that was Medusa...and I feel like Ohkubo knew that, hence Medusa's return. *sigh*

Anyway, this was another great volume. Can't complain, it was just sheer greatness.

I love Soul Eater and I’m almost at the part where the anime completely split from the manga, so I will be seeing all new stuff and I’m very excited. This cast of characters still remains one of my all time favorites.

I think this is a really solid continuation of the last instalment! This edition goes more in depth about the lore in this universe, which is really nice because it hasn’t really been explored in this level of depth before. Of course, the characters are always the star of the show here. I just love the dynamics between the main characters, and even the side characters we’re introduced to here are pretty interesting! I think Marie and Justin are fun additions to this cast, and some other side characters who’ve been around since the start, like Sid and Stein, are given some nice development and storybeats here too! The only thing that’s really keeping me from rating this five stars is the pacing. We have these kind of awkward jumps between action scenes and more ‘chill’ moments, and I feel like the flow could’ve been improved in their integration. I believe that this is probably because this book consists of 1.5 of the original published editions, which would explain the weird pacing at times as it wasn’t originally all connected.

Overall, I’m really liking the plots that volume 5 has set up, and I’m looking forward to seeing how they play out!

4.5/5

Volume bem interessante.

It is understated just how badass of a swordsman Mifune really is. But he is that type of driven but respectful warriors that always tick the box in my experience. round 2 with Black Star does a good job of showing that growth.

As much as I have mixed emotions about the manga series, I still adore Soul Eater. It’s a nostalgic experience and despite certain more minor elements, the overall story is still very enjoyable.

I’m very gradually in the process of reread the story so the read dates for these Perfect Editions will very much be out of order for, probably, the rest of the year.

As of July 29, 2023, I own this volume signed by Death the Kid’s english voice actor: Todd Haberkorn.
