A lovely collection of proper, old-fashioned essays - Hay is unashamedly parochial about Tasmania and his concerns are important ones: collective politics, art, conservation and community. There's nothing confessional about any of these pieces - they're Hay thinking through (or polemicising) things that matter to him. He's the kind of writer who, if he wasn't from Tassie, would be a national treasure.

Some interesting tales but a bit too political for my taste. And weirdly his travel writing stood out.
